Just before Christmas, Andy Cohen announced that he would become a first-time father via surrogacy. Cohen doesn’t seem to be in a relationship right now, and at the age of 50, he sounds committed to raising this child as a single parent. My issue isn’t with his age or his relationship status, but I did have some concerns that Cohen doesn’t seem to like or respect women that much, and I worried that he would have a daughter and everything would be screwed up, long-term. Well, good news? He’s expecting a boy.

While hosting CNN’s New Year’s Eve special, Andy Cohen announced the gender of his baby, who will be born in about a month.

“It’s a boy. It’s a boy,” the Bravo frontman, 50, shared on national television speaking with pal Anderson Cooper. “It’s a boy and I got to tell you something, I cannot wait to meet this boy.”

Cohen, who announced in late December that he’s expecting his first child via surrogate, said 2019 will be the “biggest” year for him. Cohen stopped there at sharing more details – he declined to give a name.

“When I was growing up and when we were growing up, I just never thought it would be possible as a gay man to grow up and have a family,” he added. “By the way, by the time it became possible, I was kind of having too much fun in my life to say, ‘I don’t think I can do this right now.’ But here I am, I turned 50 this year,” Cohen explained. “It takes some people longer to get to that place. And it took me that time.” With his son’s arrival set in the next few weeks, Cohen said he’s “getting the gear” and getting lots of “wonderful advice.”

I think in this particular case, it’s probably for the best. I usually think a first-time parent is going to be thrown into utter shambles, regardless of the sex of the baby. But I’m glad he’s not expecting a girl – I think a boy will be easier for him to handle, generally speaking. Also: I suspect that he chose the sex of which fertilized eggs were implanted in the surrogate, because you can do it that now. So my guess is that he wanted a boy.
