It’s almost like Kit Harington has a pathological need to look sad-faced. Kit covers the new issue of Out Magazine and he is not smiling or looking slightly amused in a single photo. Oh well… we’re just going to deal with his Sadface. You know what’s worse? Out Magazine even comes out and says that Kit is a wee little bloke. As they phrase it, “In person, Harington is slighter than one would imagine…” Ya think? Anyway, the interview is actually pretty great. Kit is fine with talking about how so many of his roles are homoerotic, how he hates talk shows and whether he still thinks that “being put on a pedestal as a hunk is slightly demeaning.” So, yes. Out Magazine is providing us with the latest edition of Celebitchy Presents: Kit Harington Says Words.

People always shout “You know nothing!” at him: “I get that a lot. It’s weird, this double personality — being a character.”

Appearing on talk shows: “I’m slowly getting to be more comfortable with them, but I find them terrifying. They scare the f–king living sh-t out of me.”

So many GoT characters have died: “So many people have left and died. It’s getting thinner and thinner on the ground each year. I’m just holding on to those people that have been there from the start, the core group, and wishing and praying that none of them die.”

The homoeroticism of the Night’s Watch: “There is something quite homoerotic about that. They all bunk up together. I haven’t really thought about it too much, but they’re brotherly. There’s brotherly love.”

The sexuality on GoT: “It’s not just gay and straight. We’ve got bisexual characters as well, which is rarely done on TV. I like the fact that we deal with a broad spectrum of sexuality.”

He stands by his previous statements about men being objectified: “I found it unfair, really, some of the stuff I read [in response]. I was making a point, which was that I think young men do get objectified, do get sexualized unnecessarily. As a person who is definitely in that category, as a young leading man in this world, I feel I have a unique voice to talk about that. I was making a point to sort of say, ‘It just needs to be highlighted.’ With every photo shoot I ever go to, I’m told to take off my shirt, and I don’t.”

His shirtless scenes in Pompeii: “It’s a gladiator movie! You have your top off. He’s a fighter. He’s supposed to be very fit. I got very fit.”

Visiting the ruins of Pompeii: “Completely phallic-obsessed! It was good luck to kind of touch a penis. Did you see the brothels bit? They’ve still got the murals of early pornographic pictures, basically. It was really interesting.”

Attending his first basketball game (the Knicks): “I have no idea what the rules are so I’ll just be the English guy in the crowd.”

His hair: “I look like this for the show, and this is how people recognize me at the moment… [Otherwise] I’d have short hair and no beard. Maybe a beard. I like having a beard. I could walk out on the street now, like this, and I would get recognized a lot. But tie that up, and go man-bun? Nothing.”

While I think young men do get sexualized and objectified in the Hollywood system (and the fashion industry), my problem with Kit’s comments are still pretty much the same as before. First off, women have it much worse and Kit doesn’t even seem to comprehend that. He doesn’t “get” that there’s something unequal about a system that has Melisandre naked in a scene with a fully-clothed Jon Snow. Secondly, “I’m told to take off my shirt, and I don’t.” So… he was asked to do something that made him uncomfortable and he said no, end of story. Okay. How would that story have gone if it was a photographer requested something from a young actress? And did he ever consider the idea that photographers ask to see his chest to distract from the Permanent Sadface? Third… I’m kind of tired of Kit complaining about how crazy-famous he is and how everyone thinks he’s the hottest. There’s something humble-braggy about it.

There’s also a moment of English perfection in the interview when he asks the American waitress, “Do you have any biscuits?” And it took the poor girl a second to realize he meant cookies. Kit was slightly embarrassed about it too, saying: “I didn’t know that’s what it was. That was very English of me, wasn’t it? Biscuits.” You guys… I love him. Really I do. Bless his heart.
