Last night it was fun to see Ali Wong and Bill Hader, both nominees and dating (maybe for two years it’s hard to tell), kiss when her name was announced! Ali won Best Performance by an Actress in a Limited Series for Beef. When ET’s Melvin Robert asked her in an interview after the awards about kissing Bill she played coy and said she didn’t remember much.

Ali was in a white column gown with a single off the shoulder strap. I love how elegantly it’s draped and I also appreciate that she wore her signature glasses.

OK I like them together!

Here is Ali’s acceptance speech, it was short and sweet.

Steven Yeun also won Best Actor for Beef! I can so relate to his admission in his acceptance speech that he thinks of himself as isolated and separate, that was deep, and I like how he lightened it by saying that it sounded like the plot to Frozen. The AP, ET and I think some other outlets are reporting that Ali and Steven are the first Asian-American actors to win in the limited series category, but a lot of people are pointing out that Darren Criss, who is Filipino, won in 2019. (I have not seen Beef yet due to the things we found out about actor David Choe.)

Nominee Greta Lee was also in white, in Loewe. Look at how gorgeous she is! This dress is amazing. I saw Past Lives over the break and I think she can definitely act and that we’ll be seeing Greta at the Oscars. The nominations come out on January 23.

Elizabeth Olsen was in a white Vivienne Westwood corset gown with lace panels at the waist and hem. I don’t like this gown or her styling. Her makeup is so unflattering. Elizabeth was nominated in the same category as Ali, for Love & Death.

I watched the Golden Globes red carpet live stream on ET’s YouTube channel and both of the hosts, Marc Malkin and Rachel Smith, were awkward with the celebrities. I missed Laverne Cox! What happened to E!’s coverage? When Marc interviewed Riley Keough he kept pressing her about why she dyed her hair. She said she did it for a “thing” and also because she wanted it dark. She wouldn’t specify why she dyed it though and good for her. Riley was nominated for Best Performance by an Actress in a Limited Series for Daisy Jones and The Six. That category went to Ali Wong and we’ll cover her shortly!

Riley was in a lacy Chanel column gown that would have been perfectly fine without the weird sheer and gold bib overlay. Her makeup was one of the best nude looks though and I like how it complemented her new dark hair.

Keri Russell was also in white, it was a big color last night, in a Jill Sander gown with a white tank and confetti flapper skirt – I don’t even know how to describe it. It’s kind of cool-looking, especially from the side, but I did not like her makeup and it was noticeable on camera. Someone put way too much kohl eyeliner under her eyes.

Nominee Gillian Anderson was in a white Gabriela Hearst gown with vulvas embroidered on the skirt! Like damn. It’s a lovely gown and the sentiment behind it is part of her mission to educate people about women’s bodies and sex education, like her character on the Netflix show.

Troian Bellisario was there with her husband, Patrick J. Adams, who presented along with his Suits costar, Gabriel Macht. She was in a silver net Oscar de la Renta that fit her like a glove. Gina Torres and Sarah Rafferty were also there! Everyone wants Meghan to be in the Suits revival now that there’s such a renewed interest in the show.

Margot Robbie is still doing her Barbie-gear for red carpets and… it’s fine. It’s even kind of cute. I thought it would end once the promotion was over, and she would wear regular gowns for the awards season, but no. The Barbie archives are at her disposal, and I guess Margot and her amazing stylist Andrew Mukamal are simply having too much fun with it. So they went to Armani and asked them to customize the “Superstar Barbie” dress from a 1977 doll. It worked perfectly at the Golden Globes. While Margot didn’t win a Globe for acting, she picked up an award as a producer. Sidenote: I’m getting increasingly upset with people overlooking what Margot did as an actress in Barbie.

Selena Gomez also wore Armani. Something nice: you could tell that she loved this and she felt comfortable. Something not nice: it’s a bad dress.

Greta Gerwig didn’t go for a Barbie look – this is fine with me, but it is very severe.

It’s really looking like Emma Stone might be a Best Actress contender for Poor Things, which I still haven’t seen (full disclosure). People are raving about her performance, and she won the Best Actress in a Comedy Golden Globe last night. I think she’ll probably be short-listed for an Oscar nom too. Emma is a Louis Vuitton ambassador and they actually gave her a half-decent dress, although it coordinated too well with the Globes backdrop! I feel like her makeup has been really funky for months, or am I imagining that?

Sandra Huller also wore Louis Vuitton. She should be a bigger contender for Best Actress, she’s amazing in Anatomy of a Fall. This has a nice color and I like that she really tried, but I hope we see some different stuff on her this awards season.

Oprah also wore LV. Skinny legend! She’s really doing the most to wear purple to promote The Color Purple.

Reese Witherspoon brought her 20-year-old son, Deacon Phillippe, as her date to the Golden Globes. On one hand there’s a real effort to nepotize Deacon but on the other I see how it would be fun to have your son with you at an event like that. If my college-aged son would go with me to a work event I would be thrilled. Reese wore a black off the shoulder Monique Lhuillier gown with a pale pink across the front. As I’ve been saying this morning I dig the bow trend as it’s a subtle nod to Christmas. It was over too soon this year! This is very preppy and very Reese.

Her hair and makeup are great!

As Kaiser often says, yell at me if you want but I think Emily Blunt’s bronze and white tulle Sarah Burton for McQueen gown was a disaster. It’s two different gowns put together, both of them bad. I do like to see Emily and John Krasinski together on the red carpet though and I hope they stay together forever. Also I did not like Oppenheimer and could not get into it, but the only Nolan film I’ve liked is Dunkirk.

Jodie Foster was also nominated in the Supporting Actress category for Nyad. She was in a very goth Alberta Ferretti gown with a silver sequin collar. Nyad is out now on Netflix I am putting it in my queue!

Nominee Abby Elliott (The Bear) was a bombshell in this off the shoulder black gown with a sheer waist. She just had a baby boy last summer, her second child with husband Billy Kennedy. They also have a three and a half-year-old daughter.

Jennifer Lopez actually attended the Golden Globes as the “wife of” a nominee, Ben Affleck. Affleck’s Air was nominated for Best Comedy. While Ben was on the Globes carpet for a moment – long enough for a handful of arrival photos – Jennifer basically had to walk the rest of the carpet solo. Ben went inside and sat with Matt Damon and Matt’s wife Luciana. The two couples were seated next to each other for the whole show!

It’s a shame Ben didn’t stick around the carpet because this would have been Bennifer’s first Globes carpet in something like 21 years, right? Maybe that’s why Ben avoided it. Jennifer wore this pretty pink Nicole Felicia Couture – it’s very girly and Barbie, so it sort of suited the night. In any case, I think Ben and Jen are fine and she understands that Ben doesn’t want to schmooze on the red carpet.

One amazing thing happened on the carpet – Brie Larson completely freaked out when she met J.Lo. Brie told her, live on Entertainment Tonight, that she became an actress because of Jennifer’s performance in Selena. J.Lo was gracious.

I’m so happy to see Fantasia Barrino getting her flowers for The Color Purple, especially after everything she’s been through. Her Dolce & Gabbana gown was not one of my favorites, but that’s mostly due to the weird lilac chiffon skirt. Look at the second slide in her Instagram above. With just the velvet bodice and a white sequin skirt that dress would have been excellent but they added a lower skirt layer and it just looks silly. Fantasia was nominated for Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture — Musical or Comedy for The Color Purple. That category went to Emma Stone for Poor Things. I hope Fantasia is nominated for an Oscar.

Her styling is gorgeous.

Presenter Angela Bassett was also in Dolce & Gabbana, in a bombshell off the shoulder black velvet mermaid gown with full sleeve gloves. I wish she didn’t have to present with Jared Leto, their bit was so weird and poorly written, but I loved to see her on stage. 9-1-1 is coming to ABC on March 14 I can’t wait! Birthday present for me.

Elizabeth Banks was in a slinky black corseted Dolce & Gabanna with crystal embellishments. It looks super tight but it’s a great dress. I just wish she didn’t go with a wet look for her hair. That trend should have died out long ago.

Nominee Helen Mirren was in a two tone purple D&G. If you told me this was Valentino I would believe you, but Valentino does giant gowns better than this – it doesn’t need all that ruching or that overlay. She looks like she’s having fun at least.

Going into the full Oscar season, I have to admit that I’m quietly rooting for Sandra Huller for Best Actress, just because I loved Anatomy of a Fall so much. But it’s going to be another situation like last year, with Cate Blanchett and Michelle Yeoh – choosing between two outstanding performances, the awards shows will absolutely want to give the Best Actress awards to “the first.” Last year, Oscar voters wanted Michelle to be the first Asian woman to win Best Actress. This year, they’ll want Lily Gladstone to be the first Native American/Indigenous woman to win Best Actress. Even though… Lily’s role really is more of a supporting part and even though Killers of the Flower Moon is kind of a slog and a bad script. Anyway, Lily won the Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Drama. She wore a black-and-white Valentino ensemble and walked the carpet with Leo DiCaprio. In her speech, she spoke in the Blackfeet language and then English. This is all very moving.

Florence Pugh and Meryl Streep also wore Valentino – I loved both of these looks? They’re both solid and they suit Flo and Meryl. This was Meryl’s first big event since she split with Don Gummer. Her agent (Kevin Huvane) was her date, but there’s a rumor going around that she’s dating Martin Short. LMAO. I hope that’s true.

Since I don’t watch The Morning Show, I always forget that A) Jennifer Aniston has a reason to attend awards shows and B) that TMS is pretty well-received within the industry and the show is consistently nominated for things. So, Aniston didn’t just show up at the Golden Globes out of nowhere – The Morning Show was nominated, but Aniston was not nominated as an actress (she’s a producer on the show though). Jen decided to go retro, only this is just her style, forever and always. Black column dress by Dolce & Gabbana, with a retro “Rachel” hairstyle. Jen debuted the new/old haircut and people were excited to see The Rachel again. I saw video of Aniston’s arrival and her hair looked awful in motion. It looked thin and greasy.

Hannah Waddingham’s lace gown was kind of spectacular – looked gorgeous and sexy, which is kind of tough (in my opinion) to do in a fully lace dress. It was the right amount of sheer and lining and the neckline helped.

Allison Williams’ Giambattista Valli was the worst of the black dresses on this page. While Aniston’s gown was just boring, this Valli gown was overworked and it had too many elements. The peplum should have been edited out.

The 2024 Golden Globes fashion wasn’t terrible, honestly. There weren’t many people wearing completely bizarre or terrible looks. Mostly, people played it very safe and there were a lot of very clean, streamlined styles. Speaking of, the ladies in Prada looked very good. Ayo Edebiri – who is currently ubiquitous – wore a great and simple red Prada look and she picked up her first Golden Globe for her supporting role on The Bear. People in the room were so happy for her and everyone loved her shout-out to her managers’ and agents’ assistants. Also: her bob is SO CUTE!

I liked Brie Larson’s dress a lot and I usually don’t like what she wears. She looked ladylike and sort of vintage, which goes along with what she was nominated for (Lessons in Chemistry).

Hailee Steinfeld did a very Audrey Hepburn look and it worked, although everyone does this Holly Golightly-inspired look at least once.

Bella Ramsey kept it simple. I enjoy their commitment to wearing pants to big events.

Hunter Schafer looked lovely in her Prada gown. This probably didn’t photograph as well as it looked in motion.
