Beyonce covers the October issue of GQ. She’s blonde these days! The editorial is really sexy and va-va-voom. While Beyonce’s haircare line (Cécred) gets a shoutout, Beyonce is mostly promoting her new whiskey line, SirDavis. For many years now, Beyonce flatly refuses to do traditional interviews, but she will now email with magazine journalists, which is how GQ got an interview with her. She’s very funny, and I suspect she just prefers time to gather her thoughts and edit herself, thus the email Q&A. You can see the full piece here. Some highlights:

Her life & her diet these days: “Our home is alive with cousins and friends, spontaneous talent shows, and the clatter of dominoes. I’ve been trying to focus on my health, taking my supplements, and eating very clean. I’ve given up meat, except for turkey, this summer.

Why she launched her own whiskey line: “I’ll never forget the first day I had whiskey. It spoke to me nice. I remember thinking, Why have I never had this before? It was strong and warm, just the right amount of challenge. I loved the process, the ritual of it. Whiskey isn’t something you just shoot down. It’s a commitment. You gotta have patience. I like that. Then I got into vintage Japanese whiskey and started doing tastings. It opened up a whole new world. I love everything about whiskey. The color, the smell, the way it dances in the glass.… And I love the stories that come with it. Every bottle has a history. I also like introducing whiskey to people who don’t know they love it yet. I think a lot more women would love it if they tasted it, and if they were really spoken to by the whiskey world. Whiskey isn’t just for old men in smoky bars; it’s for anyone who appreciates depth, complexity, and a bit of mystery.

Why she named her album ‘Cowboy Carter’: “I wanted everyone to take a minute to research on the word cowboy. History is often told by the victors. And American history? It’s been rewritten endlessly. Up to a quarter of all cowboys were Black. These men faced a world that refused to see them as equal, yet they were the backbone of the cattle industry. The cowboy is a symbol of strength and aspiration in America. The cowboy was named after slaves who handled the cows. The word cowboy comes from those who were called boys, never given the respect they deserved. No one would dare call a Black man handling cows “Mister” or “Sir.”

She doesn’t want people to have access to her kids: “ One thing I’ve worked extremely hard on is making sure my kids can have as much normalcy and privacy as possible, ensuring my personal life isn’t turned into a brand. It’s very easy for celebrities to turn our lives into performance art. I have made an extreme effort to stay true to my boundaries and protect myself and my family. No amount of money is worth my peace.”

Raising three kids: “I build my work schedule around my family. I try to only tour when my kids are out of school. I always dreamt of a life where I could see the world with my family and expose them to different languages, architecture, and lifestyles. Raising three kids isn’t easy. The older they get, the more they become their own individuals with unique needs, hobbies, and social lives. My twins are God-sent. Parenting constantly teaches you about yourself. It takes a lot of prayer and patience. I love it. It’s grounding and fulfilling.

On not releasing visuals for her last two albums: “I thought it was important that during a time where all we see is visuals, that the world can focus on the voice. The music is so rich in history and instrumentation. It takes months to digest, research, and understand. The music needed space to breathe on its own. Sometimes a visual can be a distraction from the quality of the voice and the music. The years of hard work and detail put into an album that takes over four years! The music is enough. The fans from all over the world became the visual. We all got the visual on tour. We then got more visuals from my film.

What music she’s listening to these days: “I love and respect all of the female singers-songwriters who are out right now.… Raye, Victoria Monét, Sasha Keable, Chloe x Halle, and Reneé Rapp. I love Doechii and GloRilla, and I just heard That Mexican OT, he’s from Houston…. He goes hard! I really like “Please Please Please” by Sabrina Carpenter, and I think that Thee Sacred Souls and Chappell Roan are talented and interesting..But the truth is, I spend most of my time listening to the classics, like Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, and music from artists on the Stax label. I just watched that documentary. It’s so good! I highly recommend it. The best movie I’ve seen this year is Inside Out 2. I think it’s brilliant, and I’m currently watching House of the Dragon and The Chi.

I just read a theory online, from a member of the Beyhive, about Beyonce’s answer on the no-visuals thing. It really is bizarre, because as she began to promote Act i: Renaissance, it felt like she was teasing a larger visual project. Maybe not on the scale of Lemonade, but definitely more visuals than what we got (bupkis). Anyway, the theory was that Beyonce fully intended to release videos or some kind of visual project to accompany Renaissance, but something happened and she didn’t like whatever got produced. Beyonce is famously a detail-oriented perfectionist, so it makes perfect sense to me that she tried to produce something, didn’t like it and then just pretended that she was never going to do any visuals. Maybe Cowboy Carter was different – she was like, hey, after what happened with Renaissance, why bother? What’s weird is that I would have much preferred visuals for Cowboy Carter. There are so many songs which are crying out for amazing music videos.

Black Mirror’s Season 7 cast. [Buzzfeed]

I totally forgot that this was announced three years ago, but LaineyGossip pointed out that there’s a big update. In 2021, Ryan Murphy announced a new project which would go alongside his “American Story” anthologies – American Crime Story, American Horror Story, etc – and the new one would be American Love Story. Murphy wanted the first American Love Story to be John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette. We hadn’t heard much of anything about it, and then Variety had this update:

The “American Story” franchise at FX is still expanding. Executive producers Nina Jacobson and Brad Simpson, who have been working with Ryan Murphy since “American Crime Story” premiered in 2016 (and served as executive producers on “Pose”), confirmed that “American Love Story,” which recounts the story of John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette, will be moving forward at FX.

“We’re very much intending to [tell that story],” Jacobson told Variety during a recent interview.

“We have great scripts on that. We’re trying to figure out when it’ll land,” Simpson added. “It is a story that really resonates right now. It’s amazing. A lot of younger women are looking to her as sort of a representational icon of a certain period of time that’s really fascinating, and hopefully, we’ll be able to bring that to the screen soon.”

The new series was initially announced in 2021, along with “Studio 54: American Crime Story,” a potential fourth installment of “ACS” following “People vs. OJ Simpson,” “The Assassination of Gianni Versace” and “Impeachment.” However, there’s no update on “Studio 54” — and it doesn’t sound likely.

[From Variety]

Sidenote: it’s funny to me that Ryan waited long enough that his good friend Gwyneth Paltrow has aged out of playing Carolyn. God knows, Gwyneth did the most to imitate Carolyn Bessette back in the day. To be fair, a lot of women did and a lot of women still do. Carolyn was a style icon and the closest thing Americans have to a “princess.” But Gwyneth’s copykeening was next-level, truly.

So, let’s dreamcast! LaineyGossip’s suggestions were Callum Turner for John-John and Vanessa Kirby or Anya Taylor-Joy for Carolyn. I’ll admit, I see the vision with Anya-as-Carolyn and I absolutely think Anya could pull off Carolyn’s je ne sais quoi. The internet is dreamcasting Elizabeth Debicki and Jacob Elordi… and I hate that. Debicki has Carolyn’s lithe, blonde physicality, but it’s too much after Debicki played Princess Diana. Elordi would also be awful as John. Weirdly, I feel like John is probably going to be easy to cast, even though no modern actor will be able to do it. They’ll probably just get some handsome dark-haired guy. I would be happy with Morgan Spector, actually? But the Carolyn casting will lead to some MAJOR fights.

I’d just like to throw a few more names out there for Carolyn: Saoirse Ronan, Elle Fanning and Haley Bennett. I think Elle and Saoirse would both nail it, and while Haley doesn’t strictly look like Carolyn, I just think she’s a good enough actress to pull it off. And if acting doesn’t matter, I actually think Hailey Bieber could do it. My other controversial opinion is that I do think the casting should be limited to American actors as well. I don’t want to see John portrayed by a guy trying to hide his posh British accent.

Wednesday night was the big Wolfs premiere in LA. If actors are capable of “phoning it in” in person, that’s what Brad Pitt and George Clooney did. They didn’t bring their significant others, they posed with their costars and they tried to not look too grumpy about the way everything went down. I found it most remarkable that Amal Clooney didn’t turn up, by the way – Amal loves to attend all of George’s red carpets. It feels especially notable that even she didn’t bother.

After the premiere, George and Brad left separately and Brad met up with Ines de Ramon, his girlfriend of about two years. They’ve only recently begun to do public outings with each other, and this was part of Brad’s “promotional work” too. Letting the paparazzi get photos of Ines when they went out to dinner at… Mother Wolf. Get it, because the movie is called Wolfs? Some Apple PR person thinks they’re a genius. Anyway, it’s definitely interesting to watch Pitt push this romance to promote his dumb movie. Speaking of:

Brad Pitt and Ines de Ramon’s connection is stronger than ever after making their red carpet debut earlier this month.

“They’re super in love,” a source exclusively shares in the newest issue of Us Weekly, adding that the duo’s decision to go public as a couple was a “big deal.”

Pitt, 60, and de Ramon, 31, went red carpet official after nearly two years of dating at the Venice International Film Festival premiere of Pitt’s new film Wolfs on September 1. The couple posed for red carpet pics alongside Pitt’s costar George Clooney and his wife, Amal Clooney. In contrast to Pitt’s all-black attire, de Ramon sported a white one-shoulder gown and silver jewelry.

The premiere made for a perfect date night for the couple, as a second source tells Us they are both “hippies at heart” and have bonded over their love of art and music. “Brad loves introducing Ines to his friends because she’s such a joy to be around,” the insider adds. “She brings out the best in Brad.”

The second source went on to note that things are “serious between Brad and Ines,” adding, “He’s very committed to her and their future.”

“Her support has shown Brad who she really is as a partner,” the first source tells Us of de Ramon. The second source adds: “It’s meant so much to him and brought them close together. Brad has a lot of up and down days, and [Ines] has been his rock through it all. She has a really good heart.”

[From Us Weekly]

“He’s very committed to her and their future.” Another tabloid (Closer) claims that Brad wants a “seventh child” now that he’s so loved up with Ines. If that happens… well… it will be chaotic. Especially given all of the conversations about why his first six kids hate him and why he doesn’t even acknowledge that he has six kids? Like, he’s indicated for years now that he doesn’t give a f–k about his adopted kids. As for Ines… I don’t have a read on her but the vibe I’m getting is that she is in it to “win” it. Win what, though?

What a pre-October Surprise. Y’all know how Robert Kennedy Jr. is a serial adulterer who is currently on his third marriage, to actress Cheryl Hines? Kennedy started running around with Hines two seconds after he forced his second wife Mary Richardson to leave their shared house. Mary died by suicide in 2012 and Kennedy married Hines in 2014. Hines has been a huge part of Kennedy’s brain-worm’d presidential campaign, and Hines apparently suggested that Kennedy throw his support behind Donald Trump. Well, it looks like Kennedy was having an affair this year. With New York Magazine’s Olivia Nuzzi, who has now been put on leave from the magazine once her bosses became aware of the relationship.

New York Magazine Washington correspondent Olivia Nuzzi is on leave after an alleged “romantic” relationship with former independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr., Status magazine first reported on Thursday.

The magazine said in an online statement that Nuzzi “acknowledged” to editors “that she had engaged in a personal relationship with a former subject relevant to the 2024 campaign while she was reporting on the campaign, a violation of the magazine’s standards around conflicts of interest and disclosures.”

A spokesperson for RFK told CNN that Kennedy, who endorsed former President Trump after dropping out of the 2024 race, “only met Olivia Nuzzi once in his life for an interview she requested, which yielded a hit piece.”

Nuzzi said in a statement shared with outlets including Axios that “the nature of some communication between myself and a former reporting subject turned personal” earlier this year. “During that time, I did not directly report on the subject nor use them as a source,” she said. “The relationship was never physical but should have been disclosed to prevent the appearance of a conflict. I deeply regret not doing so immediately and apologize to those I’ve disappointed, especially my colleagues at New York.”

N.Y. Mag said in its statement that Nuzzi “would not have continued to cover the presidential campaign” had the magazine “been aware of this relationship.” It confirmed that Nuzzi was on leave from the magazine following the incident. “An internal review of her published work has found no inaccuracies nor evidence of bias,” per the statement. The magazine “is conducting a more thorough third-party review,” it added. “We regret this violation of our readers’ trust.”

[From Axios]

Every part of this is insane, honestly. Nuzzi wrote a profile of Kennedy for NY Mag back in November 2023, and their affair apparently began after that. So throughout the year, as she wrote truly awful campaign coverage, she was pillow-talking with the guy who loves to cut the heads off of dead whales? The guy who left a dead bear cub in Central Park? The guy who is missing part of his brain because of a worm?

Before this week, Prince William was last in Aberdeen, Scotland in June 2023. He was launching his “Homewards” project and hyping himself as the savior of homelessness. He decided to do a six-city blitz to showcase that he was donating foundation money to homeless shelters and halfway houses, and a shelter in Aberdeen was one of the recipients of William’s very selective largesse. Last year’s Aberdeen trip was notable for one particular reason: no one in Aberdeen gave a sh-t. The police set up crowd-control barriers and not even four people showed up. The Scottish media made fun of William for being an uncharismatic snooze.

Well, funny story. It happened again on Thursday. William was in Aberdeen to once again do some events around Homewards, and William’s terrible staff put him in yet another horrible position, where it looked like absolutely no one gives a f–k about him:

As the camera pans around, you can see one or two people, including the journalist who originally took the videos. Last year, I suggested that it was bad staff work from William’s incompetent advance people. That still stands, and I can’t believe they let him take another huge L like this. I remember back when Prince Harry and Meghan lived in the UK, and wherever they went, they were greeted with huge, enthusiastic crowds. That’s why Huevo and Keen were so adamant that the Sussexes had to go. William and Kate thought they would get the same kind of reception when the Sussexes left. Not so much, as it turns out.

Is it me, or has Lady Gaga been relatively low-key with her Joker: Folie à Deux promotion? The A Star Is Born and House of Gucci campaigns were pretty extra, in terms of her talking points and looks. But for Joker she’s stuck to calmly confirming her engagement and upcoming album in interviews, and black ensembles in classic silhouettes for wardrobe. The craziest elements she’s offered so far are a Philip Treacy fascinator and bleached eyebrows. Call it the steadying effect of true love, I guess? That or Gaga is in her demure era. And so it is with her latest appearance on the Netflix show What’s Next? The Future with Bill Gates. The Truth or Consequences? episode explores “preserving truth in an era of misinformation,” so Gaga (in another black outfit and her naturally-hued brows are back!) weighed in on why she didn’t weigh in on the rumor early in her career that she was a man:

Lady Gaga opened up about facing rumors that she “was a man” in her early 20s.

The pop star, in an appearance on “What’s Next? The Future With Bill Gates,” told the billionaire host that the rumors “went all over the world” as she was on the road for touring or promoting her records.

She noted “imagery” on the internet “that had been doctored” of her at the time.

“They were like, ‘You know, there’s this rumor that you’re a man. Like, what do you have to say about that?’” Gaga said.

She continued, “The reason I didn’t answer the question was because I didn’t feel like a victim with that lie.”

Gaga added that she thought about kids who might be facing similar comments that would “think a public figure like me would feel shame.”

“It’s like sometimes, I guess what I’m saying, is I’ve been in situations where fixing a rumor was not in the best interest of — I thought of like the well-being of other people,” she said.

“So, in that case, I tried to be thought-provoking and disruptive in another way. I tried to use the misinformation to create another disruptive point.”

…Gaga, in her recent interview with Gates, declared that people assume that her performances are “not real,” but she sees them as the “most real thing” you’ll see about her.

She added, “That is so much more real than all of the rumors that are designed to orbit me to gain more clicks.”

[From HuffPost]

This was a really thoughtful, nuanced response from Gaga. Starting with “I didn’t feel like a victim with that lie.” That’s always an effective tactic for taking the sting out of an intended insult — to flip the script by owning it in a way, thus eliminating the negativity. And I was impressed to hear how much she was thinking about her fans, right from the beginning. At the same time, with her comments on how fixing the rumor isn’t always the best solution, Gaga really made it sound like that’s a constant presence in her life. That every little thing gets scrutinized and evaluated for all possible ramifications. And boy, that must be exhausting. And inhibiting. I appreciate her discussing her thought process behind it now. Joker: Folie à Deux comes out October 4, and the first single off her new album is set to drop the next day. Everything’s coming up Gaga!

Mild spoilers for first two episodes of Agatha All Along
Agatha All Along, the highly-anticipated spinoff to Disney+’s WandaVision, came out on Wednesday, September 18. Marvel hasn’t had a hit movie or TV series in a hot minute, so a lot is riding on this one’s success. From early reviews, critics (and me, but more on that later) love it. They’ve called it “insanely fun,” “absolutely bats— crazy in all the right kinds of ways,” and praised lead Kathryn Hahn for nailing it. It’s also backed up by an amazing supporting cast that critics are loving as well.

Kathryn Hahn has made her grand return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe as the witch Agatha Harkness, and members of the press appear to be delighted. “Agatha All Along,” the nine-episode sequel series to 2021’s “WandaVision” is being called “insanely fun” and a “bewitching follow-up” in first reactions.

“The Movie Podcast” host Daniel Baptista called Hahn’s performance “spellbinding” and “deliciously devious.”

“[‘Agatha All Along’] is the PERFECT show for the spooky season and filled with BIG WITCH ENERGY,” Baptista wrote on X/Twitter. “Kathryn Hahn is iconic as ever and delivers a deliciously devious and spellbinding performance. Joe Locke is a scene stealer. This is the most fun you’ll have feasting on a show this year.”

Bam Smack Pow’s Michael Patterson said that the series is “absolutely bats— crazy in all the right kinds of ways.”

“Kathryn Hahn is a force, camping it up as Agatha Harkness like we all knew she would,” Patterson wrote on X. “The rest of the cast is also divine, and Joe Locke is a gem. Vivid, outlandish and brilliant.”

Many viewers also praised Joe Locke and Aubrey Plaza’s performances in “Agatha All Along.”

“The first 4 eps are a delightful mix of ‘Hocus Pocus’ & ‘The Wizard of Oz,’ with a hint of horror and loads of comedy,” ScreenRant’s Joseph Deckelmeier wrote on X. “This series is insanely fun and engaging. It’s got that same captivating vibe as ‘WandaVision.’ Absolutely love the ensemble cast portraying the Coven, and Kathryn Hahn is brilliant & Aubrey Plaza is outstanding.”

“Marvel has outdone themselves with [‘Agatha All Along’]!” said FanSided’s Cody Schultz. “It’s an absolutely bewitching follow-up to WandaVision with lots of fun Easter eggs along the way for fans Kathryn Hahn’s performance is perfection, Joe Locke is iconic & the full ensemble is spectacular. One of Marvel’s best!”

“Agatha All Along” picks up after the events of “WandaVision,” in which Agatha (Hahn) was left powerless thanks to Scarlet Witch, aka Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen). In a mission to get her sorceress powers back, Agatha creates a makeshift coven of her own but not every member has the same intention. Hahn is joined in “Agatha” by Locke, Patti LuPone, Plaza, Sasheer Zamata, Ali Ahn and Debra Jo Rupp. “WandaVision” showrunner Jac Schaeffer is behind the spinoff. Brad Winderbaum, Marvel Studios‘ head of streaming, television and animation, recently appeared on the “Official Marvel Podcast” and said “Agatha All Along” will only be fun for so long until it starts scaring viewers.

“‘Agatha’ is really fun, but it’s really scary. And it gets quite dramatic,” Winderbaum teased. “She’s an amazing anti-hero. It lures you in with the fun of Halloween, and before you know it, you’re crying. It’s a Marvel brand of scary. It’s a Halloween show. There are deadly stakes in this series. It’s a fun ride, but it’s a dangerous one.”

[From Variety]

Y’all, I watched the first two episodes, and they’re really good. I wish I could binge the entire series at once because I have a feeling that we are not going to be disappointed. Kathryn Hahn is absolutely killing it as Agatha. She understands the campy-wicked-witch assignment and all Marvel fans really should be here for it. I’m also so intrigued by the backstory of each witch that Agatha recruited and especially want to know what the deal is with Joe Locke’s character, simply known as Teen. The Internet has theories, but I don’t think they’ve come together around one just yet.

I absolutely LOVED the scene where Agatha’s ragtag team of outcast witches sang together in harmony to unlock the door to The Road. Pump those Patti LuPone vocals into my veins, all day, every day. And what about Debra Jo Rupp’s Mrs. Hart? Is she under the same type of memory-affecting spell that Agatha was and Teen possibly is under? Aubrey Plaza kicked ass, too. After watching the first two episodes, I’m really excited for this show and just love how female-centric it is! I hope the rest of the season, which fittingly ends on October 30, is just as much fun as these first two episodes were.

Back in November 2019, I covered all of the stuff in and around Prince Andrew’s trainwreck Newsnight interview, where he spoke about his friendships with Jeffrey Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell, and came across like an arrogant buffoon who couldn’t be bothered to show sympathy for the girls and women abused by his friends (much less abused by Andrew). The interview landed like a bomb, but for days afterwards, Buckingham Palace did nothing but give vaguely positive off-the-record briefings about how Andrew was pleased with the interview, and how he told his mother that it was a “great success.” Then-Prince Charles was traveling overseas when the interview dropped, and he had to call his mother and tell her that this could not continue and that Andrew needed to be put out in the cold. Charles was the one driving Andrew to “step down” from royal life. Well, what if the entire thing was a huge scheme by Charles?

On the eve of Amazon Prime’s screening of Emily Maitlis’s account of her demolition of Prince Andrew, she claims Charles approved of the interview which directly led to his brother’s banishment from royal duties.

Maitlis, executive producer of A Very Royal Scandal, tells the Radio Times: ‘One month after the interview aired, I was taken aside by someone close to [then] Prince Charles and told – somewhat cryptically – that ‘HRH was not unhappy with the interview’.

‘Was I being told that the man who would ascend to the throne just three years later as our King was perhaps relieved that this exchange had taken place? That he could use the opportunity to reorder the monarchy in a way that befitted these times and the public perception of what it should be?’ Deep waters, Emily.

[From The Daily Mail]

I mean… Charles knew that the Epstein stuff was out there, and that Andrew’s issues were just waiting to be exposed in a larger way. I think it was more of a happy accident for Charles – his brother imploded on national television, and Charles made his move and took care of “the Andrew problem” for a while. It was opportunistic from Charles, but I doubt it was a “relief,” especially since this was all happening as the Sussexes were detangling themselves from the monarchy too. But sure, Charles wasn’t “unhappy” that Andrew ruined himself.
