The Emmy nominations come out today. As I get older, I care less about the Emmys, honestly – there’s so much good TV and so much great “niche” content, it feels like the Emmys are such a throwback to a different time, a time when network television and mainstream, water-cooler programming were the center of everything. Anyway, I expect that Netflix’s Harry & Meghan docu-series will get nominated for an Emmy in some “Outstanding Docuseries” category or something. Meanwhile, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s Netflix series is already nominated for a Hollywood Critics Association Award. The 2023 HCA TV Awards just announced their nominations for the Creative Arts. Here’s H&M’s category:

Best Streaming Nonfiction Series:
Harry & Meghan (Netflix)
Prehistoric Planet 2 (Apple TV+)
Rainn Wilson and the Geography of Bliss (Peacock)
Rennervations (Disney+)
The 1619 Project (Hulu)
The Reluctant Traveler with Eugene Levy (Apple TV+)

[From The Hollywood Critics Association]

They’re up against The 1619 Project? Hm. Honestly though, this category is kind of chaotic and it just shows how the “docuseries” and “nonfiction series” category has been expanded. Anyway, I’m happy for the Sussexes and their Netflix series really was good. I wish they would do another docuseries, honestly. I wish Meghan would do a cooking show too.

In January 2022 Elizabeth Holmes was convicted on 4 counts of defrauding investors in Theranos, her biotech startup that was only lacking in the bio and tech factors. It wasn’t until November of last year that Holmes had her sentencing–11 years and 3 months–but she didn’t have to report to prison until after she had given birth to her second child (with hotel heir Billy Evans). Invicta Evans arrived at the beginning of this year, and Holmes lost a bid to remain home on bail until the appeals process played out (a bid that wasn’t helped by her buying a one-way ticket to Mexico). So finally, on May 30 Holmes turned herself in at Federal Prison Camp Bryan in Southern Texas. That was exactly 6 weeks ago, and yesterday it emerged that her sentence has already been reduced by 2 years, per online records from the Federal Bureau of Prisons:

Convicted ex-Theranos CEO Elizabeth Holmes is now scheduled for early release, online records show.

In November 2022, the California former biotechnology entrepreneur was sentenced to 11 years and three months for defrauding investors in the failed Silicon Valley startup that sought to revolutionize blood testing.

On Tuesday, Federal Bureau of Prisons records showed Holmes sentence was reduced to nine years with a scheduled release date of Dec. 23, 2032–meaning she will be released two years early.

Holmes, 39, reported to a minimum-security, federal women’s prison camp located in Bryan, Texas, on May 30.

A spokesperson for the federal agency confirmed the reduction to USA TODAY on Tuesday but said they could not provide additional details about Holmes’ slated early release citing “privacy, safety, and security reasons.”

According to a statement from the federal agency, some inmates are eligible for release early via court orders such as a compassionate release due to old age and medical conditions or clemency.

Inmates can also have their sentences reduced for good conduct, including completing job assignments and completing substance abuse program courses, the Bureau of Prisons said in a statement.

Gained time can also be revoked over disciplinary concerns or other infractions, the agency said.

[From USA Today]

How on earth did she finagle this? What possible “good conduct” could she have performed in just 6 weeks that merited already shaving off 2 years? I understand the Bureau citing security concerns for why they can’t comment further, at least right now. But I can’t imagine that will stand for long, not with the high profile of her case. The only other Holmes news I’m aware of since she reported to prison was about a month ago her lawyers argued that she couldn’t afford the other part of her sentence–to pay $250 a month to the victims she scammed. It’s a tasteless argument from someone whose partner is the heir to a 70-year-old, multiple property hotel business in Southern California, and besides I don’t see how that could relate to the reduced time. But what do I know? All I can do is report (and judge and cast aspersions on) what I see, and between this and NXIVM’s Allison Mack being released a year early from her sentence just last week, I think we can all see clearly that justice is not (color) blind in this country.

Lastly, for my fellow nerds who remember by heart their fourth grade multiplication tables: 6 weeks is 42 days. Elizabeth Holmes got her sentence reduced by 2 years after serving in prison for less time than Liz Truss was Prime Minister of the UK.

The WGA strike is still happening in Hollywood, and other unions are refusing to cross the picket line. It’s likely that a SAG-Aftra strike will happen in the next few days. It’s also looking like the Emmy Awards will be postponed, especially if the actors go on strike and the writers are still on strike in September. Speaking of, the studios and the streamers are trying to drag out the writers’ strike until all of the writers go broke.

Regardless of whether SAG-AFTRA goes on strike this week, the studios have no intention of sitting down with the Writers Guild for several more months.

“I think we’re in for a long strike, and they’re going to let it bleed out,” said one industry veteran intimate with the POV of studio CEOs. With the scribes’ strike now finishing its 71st day and the actors’ union just 30 hours from a possible labor action of its own, the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers are planning to dig in hard this fall before even entertaining the idea of more talks with the WGA, I’ve learned. “Not Halloween precisely, but late October, for sure, is the intention,” says a top-tier producer close to the Carol Lombardini-run AMPTP.

While some dismiss this as just “cynical strike talk,” studio and streamer sources around town confirm the strategy. They also confirm that the plan to grind down the guild has long been in the works for a labor cycle that all sides agree is a game-changer one way or another for Hollywood.

“It’s been agreed to for months, even before the WGA went out,” one executive said. “Nobody wanted a strike, but everybody knew this was make or break.”

Receiving positive feedback from Wall Street since the WGA went on strike May 2, Warner Bros Discovery, Apple, Netflix, Amazon, Disney, Paramount and others have become determined to “break the WGA,” as one studio exec blatantly put it. To do so, the studios and the AMPTP believe that by October most writers will be running out of money after five months on the picket lines and no work.

“The endgame is to allow things to drag on until union members start losing their apartments and losing their houses,” a studio executive told Deadline. Acknowledging the cold-as-ice approach, several other sources reiterated the statement. One insider called it “a cruel but necessary evil.”

The studios and streamers’ next think financially strapped writers would go to WGA leadership and demand they restart talks before what could be a very cold Christmas. In that context, the studios and streamers feel they would be in a position to dictate most of the terms of any possible deal.

[From Deadline]

This drag-out-the-strike approach is not just “cold as ice,” it’s stupid as hell. The writers are not asking for anything crazy, they’re not demanding seven-figure paychecks or top billing. They’re asking to be paid fairly for their work and for better working conditions – the studios and streamers broke the system and systematically devalued and marginalized writers. The WGA has even publicly offered to come to the negotiation table, but AMPTP has shrugged… because the streamers are just buying foreign content and studios are just shuttering projects, so they’re “saving money.” The studios and streamers are the ones without any longterm plans.

Meanwhile, the thing that really scares the studios is a SAG-Aftra strike alongside all of the other guilds and unions striking in solidarity. The SAG strike is looming, which is why AMPTP requested federal mediation to come in and take their side. SAG “agreed to the AMPTP’s last-minute request for federal mediation and has reaffirmed the negotiating committee’s dedication to securing a fair deal by the expiration of the extended contract at 11:59 p.m. PT on Wednesday, July 12.” SAG’s statement also pointed out that AMPTP is leaking like a sieve, especially given this Variety exclusive on AMPTP’s request to bring in the feds.

While I haven’t yet watched The Office, I enjoy Rainn Wilson’s quirky, Dennis-the-Menace vibe, and he’s in one of my all-time favorite movies, Galaxy Quest, as one of the aliens. I’m really intrigued by his latest Peacock series Rainn Wilson and the Geography of Bliss. It’s based on a book of the same name (minus the Rainn Wilson intro, of course) and follows him around the world trying out local practices of happiness. So as part of promoting the show, Rainn sat down with Bill Maher on Maher’s Club Random podcast and discussed his personal journey with satisfaction over the years:

‘Why am I not the next Jack Black?’: “When I was in ‘The Office,’ I spent several years really mostly unhappy because it wasn’t enough,” Wilson admitted. “I’m realizing now, like, I’m on a hit show, Emmy nominated every year, making lots of money, working with Steve Carell and Jenna Fischer and John Krasinski and these amazing writers and incredible directors like Paul Feig. I’m on one of the great TV shows. People love it. I wasn’t enjoying it. I was thinking about, ‘Why am I not a movie star? Why am I not the next Jack Black or the next Will Ferrell? How come I can’t have a movie career? Why don’t I have a development deal?’”

It’s never enough: “When I was on ‘The Office,’ I was clutching and grasping at, okay, I was making hundreds of thousands. I wanted millions, and I was a TV star, but I wanted to be a movie star. It was never enough. Humans have lived for hundreds of thousands of years, and ‘never enough’ has helped us as a species.”

The Office–Pandemic edition: “It would’ve been so much fun to film ‘The Office’ during the pandemic,” Wilson said. “If we had pandemic episodes, that would’ve been amazing. ‘The Office’ writers were so great–they would’ve been able to spin that in some beautiful ways.”

He has an episode pitch ready: “I think it would be: [Dwight] gets the call from corporate to get everyone back in the office and everyone is resistant,” Wilson said. “So, one at a time, Dwight has to kidnap every ‘Office’ cast member and bring them into Dunder Mifflin in some kind of obscure and somewhat inappropriate way.”

[From Yahoo! Entertainment]

If you take Wilson’s comments just from the excerpts in this article, he sounds whiny and petulant. But when you put it in the context of the show he’s promoting and, as a result, the searching, contemplative side of himself that he’s opening up in the process, then the comments make more sense. He’s clear now on the fact that his thinking back then was distorted, and he’s worked to figure out how his head got stuck in that place at that particular time. I have empathy with him for that. But of course, I’m the girl who took a summer course on existentialism in lieu of having a bat mitzvah at age 13, so I’m already a fan of breaking down these philosophical thoughts. And I’m just plain nerdy. Aside from that, all I have to say is I hope some producers were listening cause he offered up a great Office reunion/reboot scenario.

Sarah Brady and Jonah Hill dated for something like one year. They broke up last summer, after months of couples counseling in which their therapist would take Jonah’s side and advise Sarah to avoid speaking to men and not hang out with her girlfriends. Sarah has the screenshot evidence of just how controlling and emotionally abusive Jonah was to her, and she rolled out her evidence and her story over the weekend. Jonah hasn’t really responded – no apologies, no social media posts directed at Sarah, no statements from his rep. Instead, Jonah is posting about his “complete unrelenting control” merchandise. Creepy. Soon after Jonah and Sarah ended, Jonah became involved with a woman named Olivia Millar. Millar just welcomed a child with Jonah in late May. The timing is important because Sarah apparently did not want to do this evidentiary dump during Olivia’s pregnancy.

Sarah Brady purposely waited to accuse ex-boyfriend Jonah Hill of “emotional abuse” until after he welcomed his first baby.

Brady told her Instagram followers on Sunday that she “waited until” Hill’s partner Olivia Millar gave birth before she released screenshots of aggressive texts from the actor.

“I didn’t want [Millar] to have to see all of this while she was pregnant because I didn’t know what kind of stress that would cause her and her baby physically,” the 26-year-old surfer explained in a voice memo posted to her Instagram Story over the weekend.

Brady also admitted that while “the timing can seem bad,” she hoped Millar saw the posts so she can “make an informed decision of how she wants to care for herself and her baby.”

“I just hope she would receive some of these screenshots somehow through friends, like, friends of mine that I met through him that I know are good people that I know would make an effort to protect her,” Brady said.

On Saturday, the athlete — who said she was “not trying to slander somebody’s reputation” — posted screenshots of Hill’s critical messages, in which he demanded she refrain from “surfing with men,” posting “sexual pictures” and having “friendships with women who are in unstable places.”

[From Page Six]

While we knew that Jonah had moved on with Olivia last fall (they were pap’d together), we only found out about her pregnancy in March of this year, less than three months before she gave birth. I’m starting to side-eye the timing of the pregnancy too – I’m not suggesting that Jonah overlapped relationships, but it would not surprise me at all if Jonah baby-trapped Olivia very early in their relationship as a way to control her. That is exactly what emotionally abusive men do, because now it will be even harder for Olivia to leave. “You can’t leave, we don’t want to raise our child in a broken home, right” And don’t forget “if you leave, you’ll never see this baby again, I’ll bury you in court, I’ll bankrupt you in lawyer’s fees.” Sending prayers to Sarah and Olivia both. I hope Sarah is right and Olivia has friends she can turn to for help when the time comes.

It’s always a weird feeling when we know the Duke and Duchess of Sussex are about to launch something or do something big, but no one knows what and so the peanut gallery just makes wild predictions and, as always, nasty assumptions about the state of Meghan and Harry’s marriage and business. The speculation about their business has actually died down a lot over the past week, hopefully because there’s a limit to how many times British and Australian royal commentators can claim to know “how Americans really feel about the Sussexes.” My guess is that this summer will be all about Heart of Invictus, leading into the Invictus Games in Germany, and then in the early fall, we’ll probably get some big announcements from the Sussexes about what’s next for them. I mean, I hope it’s sooner than that – I would love it if H&M were making deals and announcements every week, but I get it. In any case, that dumbass Kinsey Schofield is parroting some of the hater talking-points and of course the Mail picked it up:

A royal commentator has predicted Meghan Markle and Prince Harry will soon abandon their much-hyped brand, Sussex Entertainment. During a segment on Australian breakfast show Sunrise, Kinsey Schofield said Meghan’s American agent is forcing her to pursue work separate from her husband, including new movie roles. It comes after Meghan’s $20million Spotify deal was axed last month.

Sunrise host Matt Shirvington asked Schofield whether this was the ‘beginning of the end’ for the Sussexes.

‘I certainly think that this is the beginning of the end for the Sussex Entertainment brand, which was so important to them when they left the British Royal family and the idea of Megan taking off and doing her own thing,’ she said. ‘I mean, this is important that this is William Morris endeavor, her new agency, telling her to do this. They think the Sussex brand is tainted at this point in time and you saw with their big announcement that they were signing Megan that they excluded Prince Harry from it.’

Schofield said the agency’s efforts to make Meghan into a ‘bigger star’ could lead to conflict at home between the couple. She predicted Prince Harry would likely return to working with charity as Meghan pursues new goals.

She also mentioned Meghan has been rumoured to having been offered a movie role intended for Prince Harry’s mother, Princess Diana. The film would be a sequel to the 1993 Kevin Costner hit The Bodyguard.

[From The Daily Mail]

“The Sussex brand is tainted!” Yes, their Netflix series was called “Harry & Meghan,” and Meghan’s podcast was called Archetypes and nothing was ever labeled “Sussex Entertainment.” But sure. Meghan is absolutely not going back to acting, she’s made that perfectly clear, she sees herself as a producer and content-creator now. The one thing I will say is that I think it’s correct to assume that Meghan will be moving more towards the entertainment side and brand-building of their business, given the fact that she signed with WME and Harry didn’t. Does it follow that WME is “forcing” Meghan and Harry to work separately or whatever? No. These people are just desperate for “Sussex split” crumbs.

According to People Magazine, the Wales kids are officially out of school this week and ready to start their summer holiday. This time of year is usually when the Princess of Wales does her final events of the summer – appearances at Wimbledon – and then goes on summer vacation as well. After the Wimbledon finals this coming weekend, we probably won’t see Kate again late September or early October. I think it was 2021 when she disappeared – absolutely zero public events or sightings – for something like ten or eleven weeks. Last summer, she did make an effort to do a few events during her summer holiday, but she still disappeared for a big chunk of the summer. So what are her summer plans? According to Vanity Fair/OK Magazine, Kate does plan to “work” – maybe??

The summer is usually the slowest season for the royals, but this year Prince William and Princess Kate have been packing their schedules to the brim. Between family events like Trooping the Colour and last week’s Scottish service to honor the coronation, William’s whistle-stop tour promoting his initiative to address homelessness, and Kate’s engagements for her role as the president of the V&A and the All England Lawn Tennis Club, the couple has been spending more time with the public.

According to one insider who spoke to OK! Magazine, Kate’s busier schedule is intentional.

“She’s taking on more engagements than ever before,” the insider said. “She feels like it’s more important than ever for the monarchy that she’s seen out and about and that people don’t just associate her with relaxing all summer.”

The insider added that King Charles III was pleased to see Kate attending more public events. “King Charles is so happy that Kate wants to take on extra events and duties,” they said. “Especially because the British people are more able to come out and see her in the summer, so she’s getting to be with an audience who waits all year for time off to meet her.”

[From Vanity Fair]

Ah, so we’re supposed to give her credit for “working in the summer” because she did events in June and early July? Like… she usually does that. She’s usually out and about before and during Wimbledon, and then the Wimbledon finals mark the start of her two-month or ten-week disappearance. Call me when she’s got events scheduled post-Wimbledon, you know? Does she have anything on her schedule for early August? How about September? No?

The British media, the British government and British monarchy all had to eat humble pie on Monday when President Joe Biden had a day-long stopover in the UK. They had been seething about Irish Joe for months, crying salty tears about Biden’s age, his unwillingness to attend the coronation, his love of Ireland and his prioritization of the EU (over the Brexit shenanigans). But at the end of the day, both Rishi Sunak and King Charles got their photo-ops with Pres. Biden and Biden laid on the Irish charm. The president and the king even appeared to be quite chummy and happy in each other’s company, with Biden putting his arm around Charles a few times. Which led some in the media to clutch their pearls about royal protocols and gauche Americans getting handsy with the king. Interestingly enough, Buckingham Palace was very quick to shut down that conversation.

There was some speculation that Biden broke royal protocol by casually putting his hand on King Charles’ during their exchange.

However, a Buckingham Palace source confirms King Charles was “entirely comfortable” with Biden touching the monarch on the back. “What a wonderful symbol of warmth and affection it was between both the individuals and their nations,” the source says.

The source adds that — despite some claims to the contrary — it was in keeping with the correct protocol that the President, 80, walked in front of the King, 74, during the inspection of the Guard of Honor.

[From People]

Yeah – I don’t think Charles minded. I also don’t think QEII minded it either, especially when it came to Michelle and Barack Obama (she seemed to really enjoy both of them). It’s worth noting, again, that this was not the first time Charles and Joe Biden met – they’ve dealt with each other before, and the palace knows how informal Pres. Biden can be. The photos were actually lovely and did more to further the British-American “special relationship” than a million White House briefings. The king and president are generational peers with a lot in common. Speaking of, that was the point of the New York Times’ coverage, that Biden and Charles have a lot in common. Unfortunately, the Times included something about the two men’s families:

Charles and the president have also faced heightened scrutiny over their complex relationships with their younger sons. Mr. Biden’s adversaries have seized on Hunter Biden’s plea deal on two misdemeanor tax crimes to attack the president. The king’s relationship with Prince Harry has been in the spotlight since Harry and his wife, Meghan, withdrew from royal duties in 2020.

“They need to perform that job of being a father in an often public and glaring light,” Ms. Chernock, the history professor, said.

[From The NY Times]

So we’re putting “a prince marrying a Black woman and prioritizing his new family” in the same category as “Hunter Biden’s long and seedy history of drug abuse and terrible behavior” huh. Not only that, Biden is a much better father than Charles – while Hunter is a disaster, Joe Biden has loved him and supported him unconditionally and tried to get him help throughout his life. Joe Biden knows what it’s like to lose a child – he’s lost two of his children and he adores his sole living son, his sole living daughter and all of his grandchildren. Meanwhile, Charles pulled his son’s security, said nothing as a vicious and bloodthirsty media machine was weaponized against the Sussexes, and Charles evicted his grandchildren from the secure home Harry paid for. I hope Biden and Charles DID talk about Harry. Biden was probably like, “You did what to that redheaded kid? You’ve only seen your grandkids how many times??”

A lot of English-language media outlets are (willfully) misreporting what’s happening with Brad Pitt and Chateau Miraval. In 2021, Angelina Jolie successfully sold her half (Nouvel) of the Miraval business to a Stoli subsidiary, Tenute del Mondo. Stoli is owned by Yuri Shefler, so when you hear anything about “Nouvel did this” or “Nouvel is suing Pitt,” it’s Yuri Shefler and his business, NOT Angelina. Separately, Angelina and Brad are suing each other over the sale of Nouvel. But that’s not what this story is about – this is about the current owner of Nouvel, Yuri Shefler, and how he’s not playing games with Brad Pitt. Shefler/Nouvel has filed new charges against Pitt in a California court. Pitt has “looted” the Miraval business, defrauded Nouvel, hidden Miraval assets and attempted to cut Tenute del Mondo out of Miraval’s operations. From the Financial Times:

Brad Pitt “looted” the Château Miraval vineyard he co-owned with ex-wife Angelina Jolie in Provence, spending millions of dollars in profits on swimming pool renovations and a recording studio, lawyers suing the actor have claimed.

Nouvel, a company through which Jolie previously owned a stake in the French winery, said in a filing to a court in California on Monday that it was owed more than $350mn by Pitt and his partners. The company alleged they “engaged in increasingly outrageous actions to retain control” of Château Miraval, while allegedly “stripping [the rosé producer] of its assets”.

The allegations that Pitt acted like a “petulant child” while engaging in a “blatant money grab” are the latest salvo in a bitter legal feud between the Hollywood stars, who filed for divorce in acrimonious circumstances in 2016, with Jolie accusing Pitt of a drunken attack on her and the couple’s children while on a private flight to the US.

Since the divorce, Pitt has “masterminded a so-far-successful plan to seize de facto control of Château Miraval”, Nouvel’s lawyers claimed on Monday, alleging that he had frozen Shefler’s Stoli out of running the company by refusing to appoint neutral directors to the board of the Luxembourg-based entity through which the vineyard operates.

Lawyers for Pitt had previously accused Shefler and Stoli of attempting a “hostile takeover” of the vineyard, where the two actors were married. Pitt also maintains he still owns 60 per cent of the estate, claiming he only “nominally” transferred 10 per cent to Jolie in 2013. Nouvel’s legal team said Jolie had initially tried to sell her share of Miraval to Pitt, but walked away because he made the deal contingent on her signing a non-disparagement agreement.

They further alleged that Pitt has “wasted the company’s assets, spending millions on vanity projects, including more than $1mn on swimming pool renovations, building and rebuilding a staircase four times, and spending millions to restore a recording studio”. They added that Pitt spent “nearly a million euros a year constantly rebuilding stone walls using stone masons from Croatia”, and close to €3mn on unspecified expenses such as “garment work”.

In Monday’s filing, Shefler’s company accused Pitt’s team of launching a “xenophobic, untrue smear campaign worthy of Putin himself” against the Russian-born entrepreneur, who they said had been forced into exile by his criticism of the Kremlin and had stood up for LGBT rights.

Nouvel claimed Pitt also turned over half the value of Miraval’s trademarks to Perrin, without the express permission of Jolie’s former holding company, which is a joint-owner. The trademarks were originally registered ahead of a potential joint venture with luxury goods group LVMH, Nouvel said in court documents, although no such deal ever went ahead.

They disputed that Pitt, who has won Academy Awards as a producer and actor, had been deeply devoted to viticulture. “Pitt is an actor, not a winemaker. He deals in illusions, not dirt and grapes,” they wrote.

[From Financial Times]

Buried within Vanity Fair’s extensive report on the Miraval battle royale was the admission that yes, the French authorities raided Miraval and Shefler – and the French government – now Miraval’s business records and they have a better look at Pitt’s years-long mismanagement of Miraval, how much money Pitt has wasted, how many “deals” Pitt made without informing Nouvel (before and after Nouvel’s sale). All of this has barely been reported in the English-language press, but it’s interesting that Shefler is apparently taking this to court in California. My prediction is that when all of this is over, Yuri Shefler is going to fully own Miraval and Shefler is going to win a defamation lawsuit against Pitt.

These are photos of Pitt and his plastic surgery at the British Grand Prix over the weekend, where he was filming scenes for his new film, Apex.
