Taylor Swift launched her app, The Swift Life, in December 2017. It was supposed to be a fun subscription app for the true-blue Snake Fam, full of never-before-seen videos, photos and commentary. The app also featured an in-house platform for the Snake Fam to talk to one another, like its own little social media platform. About 24 hours after the app launched, The Swift Life became home to some of the most Deplorable commentary this side of Facebook. At the time, Taylor had not talked about politics, nor had she taken the time to shut down her neo-Nazi fanbase (which she still hasn’t done, just FYI). So, Republicans, Deplorables, fascists and neo-Nazis suddenly felt like they had a home, and that home was The Swift Life. Thirteen months later, and The Swift Life is dead.
Taylor Swift is following in the footsteps of the Kardashian-Jenner sisters and shutting down her app. The app, named The Swift Life, announced the news on its Twitter account that as of Feb. 1, it won’t be available for download. It was launched last year in partnership with Swift’s “Reputation” album release.
“Over a year ago, we launched The Swift Life alongside Taylor’s critically acclaimed, 6th studio album, ‘Reputation,’” the statement read. “It provided a creative and inclusive place for Taylor and her fans to connect with each other while expressing themselves in a uniquely interactive community.” The statement continued, “As the ‘Reputation’ era comes to an end, our time on The Swift Life will be ending too.”
Current users will be able to utilize the virtual currency they have until Feb. 1, but in-app purchases already have been disabled.
“We would like to thank all the dedicated fans who downloaded The Swift Life, engaged with this amazing community and created gorgeous pieces of content for others to enjoy,” the statement concluded.
What’s a little bit funny – to me – is that Kim Kardashian and her sisters are shutting down their apps too, only they announced it before Swift. Kim and her sisters had their apps before Taylor, and Taylor totally copied Kim’s “Kimoji” idea with her in-app “Taymojis.” So maybe Taylor just got tired of looking like she was copying her enemy, and so she quit her app right after Kim quit her app? I don’t know, but it’s definitely weird timing. Broke: apps. Woke: quitting your app and throwing lavish holiday parties.
