Pretty much as soon as Anne Hathaway got out of her limo, people were already pursing their lips and calling her the worst dressed. She’s not MY worst dressed, but let’s be clear: this is not a good look. I think Anne probably wanted to do something really different than her usual Armani or Valentino looks, so she went with a designer she rarely wears: Elie Saab. And maybe Elie Saab did her dirty. I don’t know. Is it possible she actually chose this for herself and the people at Elie Saab were like “really, girl?” All that being said, I don’t mind an animal print. But if you’re going to be bold enough to do an animal print, don’t weaksauce it with this boring AF cut.
Usually, Jessica Chastain gets about five things wrong all at once on any given red carpet. This Burberry look was an exception – it’s not my favorite look of all time, but it’s totally solid. The only thing I would change is her hairstyle. She can do a slicked back style if she wants – ugh – but don’t make it look like you’re channeling Coneheads.
Penelope Cruz in Ralph & Russo. What a snooze, right? It probably costs a fortune to look this boring.

I’m a Julia Roberts stan. I don’t have anything to hide. One of the saddest moments this fall was realizing she’d had her birthday and I couldn’t pretend to be Oprah interviewing her all “Julia is FIFTYYYYYY” anymore.

Wow, Julia Roberts certainly looks… um, fresh? Freshened, perhaps. Her skin is tighter now than it was when she was in Steel Magnolias. I honestly didn’t even recognize her at first, although looking at her more closely now, you can tell that it’s a combination of things – a dark tan and a brassy hair color to camouflage the subtle new work on her face. Julia’s pantsuited ensemble is Stella McCartney. You guys now how I feel about Stella’s work, but I tend to think this is… okay? It’s certainly flattering, giving Julia an illusion of a very weird hourglass figure. But if you look at the pieces separately, you can see that the trousers are actually terrible.
Honestly, Dakota Fanning was one of my picks for best dressed. I know we’ve seen this style of Armani gown on other women in other years, but it’s a classic cut done well, and it looks amazing on her.
I truly didn’t notice it last night, but Glenn Close wore one of the most amazing sack dresses OF ALL TIME. Angelina Jolie is so jealous that didn’t think of literally wearing a black sack with arm and neck holes to an awards show. Glenn’s sack dress is Armani. She got to sweep her sack dress up to the stage when she won Best Actress in a Drama. I wish we had a good cutaway to Gaga at that very moment.

Halle Berry is so gorgeous she makes me want to give up sugar. I know she’s on a keto diet by necessity as she has Type 1 diabetes, but if that’s her secret (along with a ton of exercise, which frankly would be easier for me than cutting sugar) I will consider it. She was in Zuhair Murad, in a cranberry gown with a deep v neck and velvet stripes. I swear we’ve seen her in many variations of this dress over the years but my god does it work for her. She’s 52 years old and I should know this by now but I have to look it up every time because she looks like this. One complaint is that her fake ponytail is too long, but I did not notice that when she was on stage.
Halle presented along with Lena Waithe, who was also strikingly gorgeous on camera. Lena is usually cute and sporty looking but last night she just looked elegant. It’s her new hair I think. This still photo doesn’t do her justice.

Kristen Bell also killed it in Zuhair Murad. She looked like she was 5-10 years younger. It was her styling along with how perfect that dress was. I’ve been rightfully criticized for liking very safe, classic looks so if that’s your criticism of this gown I’m ok with that. Overall she knocked it out of the park though. Oh and I linked to this in an earlier post today but she made me feel better about not owning any designer heels. (Unless Stuart Weitzman counts. They were on sale!)
This is a post with beautiful gowns, so here’s Gemma Chan in a breathtaking Valentino gown. It’s rare that one of these stupid open mullet gowns actually works like this. Look at the draping and gathering along the skirt, it’s perfection. It has pockets too and a bow at the back. They stuck to a single rich color in a single fabric and let the amazing cut of the dress shine. Her hair and makeup are so gorgeous too. I don’t even mind the matchy shoes.
Nominee Laura Dern was also in Valentino, in that deep crimson color which was so popular, but unlike Gemma’s gown there’s just a little too much happening here. Maybe I would like it without sleeves or with a sleek bodice.
Gemma’s costar Michelle Yeoh was in bright green and she wore her Crazy Rich Asians character Eleanor’s emerald ring on the red carpet! She told Giuliana on the red carpet that it was her own ring too. I don’t have an ID on her gown, but it’s really striking and I love the wrap. It looks like the dress is leather and lace.

I really feel things for Timothée Chalamet. He’s impossibly beautiful and incredibly talented. He’s also SO young and SO fun. Timothee likes fashion. He dated Madonna’s daughter, and now he’s dating Lily-Rose Depp, a young fashionista/actress. He’s turning into the best actor of his generation too. So basically, I loved that Timothee turned up at the Golden Globes in this honest-to-God SPARKLY HARNESS. His ensemble is Louis Vuitton and I love a sparkly harness. How chic. How now.
I don’t know what’s happening to me, because I usually loathe yellow dresses, but I was totally fine with Rachel Brosnahan’s Prada gown. Do I wish it was a different color? Sure, maybe. But I didn’t think it looked bad at all. The cut was spectacular.
Everyone knows that Rami Malek and Lucy Boynton are dating right? They’re dating. She wore this gold Celine gown and they managed to not pose together solo. Rami is waging one of the smartest Oscar campaigns I’ve ever seen, and I would not be surprised at all if Rami ends up winning an Oscar this year.

These photos don’t do Saoirse Ronan justice. Whenever the Golden Globes or E! cameras found her, she was glowing and shimmering. She’s become one of my favorite young women to watch, on and off screen. Her bone structure has really popped over the past few years, and she’s lost her girlish, coltish beauty and become an absolutely stunning young woman and a bombshell. Saoirse knew that she was just there to party and have a good time, and that’s how she dressed – this Gucci dress is sexy without being trashy, interesting without being too “look at me.” She’s just gorgeous.
Also in Gucci? Giuliana Rancic. This sh-t looks off-the-rack. And I’m still so mad at Giuliana and Ryan Seacrest for still being incapable of doing their f–king jobs.
Here’s Claire Foy in Miu Miu. I saw some questions about whether yellow was the right color for her. I generally hate yellow on the red carpet, but I think the color here is fine on her – she’s pale enough where it really looks striking. The problem with this dress is the fit – there is too much looseness in the bust, and it makes her boobs look sad.
Kate Mara also wore Miu Miu and this was very easily one of the worst looks of the night. Everything was bad – terrible hair, too-dark makeup and one of the ugliest dresses I’ve ever seen.
Camilla Belle in Jason Wu. Pretty color, but the dress looks way too stiff, and the whole look just felt too much.

Regina King was nominated in two categories last night, Best Actress in a Limited Series, for Seven Seconds, and Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture, for If Beale Street Could Talk. She won for Beale Street and her speech was amazing! She almost got played off by the music but they DIDN’T DARE.
The best part is around 2:05 where she says celebrities are criticized for using their soapbox but then she did that and it was triumphant.
Celebrities say we’re using the time to talk about ourselves when we’re on our soapbox and using a moment to talk about the system things that are going on in life.
Times up times two. The reason why we do this is because we understand that our microphones are big and we’re speaking for everyone.
I’m going to use my platform right now to say that in the next two years, everything that I produce… [will be] 50% women. I just challenge anyone out there who is in a position of power, not just in our industry, but in all industries… to stand with us in solidarity and do the same.
Now I have chills. I saw this last night of course but rewatching it again is getting to me. I want to see Beale Street, even though I know it will make me cry. The part where she thanked director Barry Jenkins and said “my son said to me that it was the first time he really saw himself” got to me. Speaking of her son, Ian, who turns 22 this month, he went to the Globes with his mom. Their interview with Ryan Seacrest on the red carpet is below. Look at Ryan touching Ian’s jacket at :40 in. Their interview was almost over when Regina pointed out Ian’s Time’s Up pin. SHE KNEW WHAT SHE WAS DOING. She is subtly calling out Ryan for being an abusive a-hole and Ian took the hint and ran with it.
Regina was in an amazing pink sequin Alberta Ferretti gown. I love the detailing and the pattern differences in the beading. This must have taken hundreds of hours to make. Also in Alberta Ferretti we have Yvonne Strahovski of The Handmaid’s Tale looking lovely and understated and Judy Greer. Greer wore a full on oversized suit with a giant bow tie! Points for looking unique I guess but this could also be called a clown suit.
Y’all, @ReginaKing should be the winner of everything. Plus she is the nicest human ever.
