We been knew about The Favourite – it’s exactly the kind of film that Hollywood likes to reward. It’s about British royalty, it stars a bunch of British actors, it’s full of ballsy performances and there’s a bunch of bonus lesbianism. So it wasn’t really surprising that Olivia Colman won Best Actress in a Musical/Comedy at the Golden Globes. I did think Emily Blunt had a good shot, but no, The Favourite has been quietly building a lot of momentum in the past month especially. Plus, Olivia Colman is just the kind of unfussy, charming British lady that American award shows love – she’s pithy and funny and genuinely happy to be there. Her Stella McCartney dress was a snooze, but it just reinforced the reality that Colman isn’t a Fashion Girl, she’s a Real Actress. If you ask me, I think Colman is the biggest threat – as of this moment – to Lady Gaga’s Best Actress Oscar chances.
Here are Olivia’s bitches, Rachel Weisz and Emma Stone. Both Emma and Rachel have been somewhat quiet so far during the awards season – Rachel has been quiet because she only recently had a baby with James Bond, and Emma has been quiet because she can’t believe she’s about to land another Oscar nomination. Rachel wore an absolutely awful Celine dress with mountains of ruffles. Emma’s Louis Vuitton dress looks rather flat in these photos, but when she was on stage, it looked rather nice, honestly.
And here are just a couple of ladies also wearing Louis Vuitton, Indya Moore and Laura Harrier.

Last night The Americans won Best TV Drama Series! For such an incredible show it sure took long enough, its sixth and final season, for it to be recognized. It wasn’t even nominated in the category until last year, which is a crime, and it lost at The Emmys to Game of Thrones. So I’m happy The Americans is getting acknowledgement. It’s a slow burn for sure and it took me a while to get into it, but it’s so worth it.
As for fashion, star Keri Russell was in this silver sequin Monique Lhuillier with a plunging v-neck and a floor length skirt. The top of this dress makes it look like she’s slouching. I would slouch in that gown as I wouldn’t trust it. There’s something off about the shoulders too. I like a good retro shoulder pad but the bodice is all wrong. She’s lovely though and I’m so happy for her and her partner, Matthew Rhys. Plus all the talented cast and crew on this show. Especially the costume designers!
Here’s a cute photo of Keri carrying her Louboutins while getting out of limo to go to the WME Golden Globe Party. Now I don’t even care if I ever own a pair of those bloody shoes. I guess those high end designer shoes are typically uncomfortable.
Presenter Kaley Cuoco had on a very cute white and navy Monique Lhuillier gown featuring a velvet strapless top and white structured full skirt with pockets. The black bow at the waist fit perfectly and gave the dress a holiday vibe. She kept sticking her hands in the pockets and it was cute. She looked so good! I really liked her hair, it looked so sleek like that. Her arms are goals.
Linda Cardellini was also in Monique Lhuillier. More women wore that designer than any other, which is rare as Christian Siriano usually takes that honor. Her black chiffon and sequin dress is just ok. We’ve seen that same silhouette, the asymmetric side draped top with the keyhole neckline, on so many gowns. Linda starred in Green Book, the white savior movie which won Best Comedy or Musical for some reason. I really hope that’s the only award it gets this season apart from some technical ones.
Last night there was a weird bit where “doctors” in white lab coats came out giving flu shots. There was no real reason for it and the flu shots must have been fake, but Linda was game. A lot of celebrities said “no,” which would be my default response to random people doing that, and I usually get a flu shot. What if you already had one that season? Here’s that video:

Jameela Jamil had on a salmon-colored Monique Lhuillier featuring floral embroidery and beading. The top is a little too low cut, you can see her strapless bra from the side, but I really like the elegant gathered skirt. Imagine if the top was higher and just a solid color. It’s a good look for her.
Newly engaged lady Heidi Klum was in a fug Lhuillier ballgown with a very low cut bustier top and a full skirt with colorful floral appliques. Her makeup was bad and her face kind of says it all in the full length photo. She does look thrilled to be with her new fiance, Tom Kaulitz. I hope they don’t make it official. That would be a disaster.
Amber Heard over accessorized her Lhuillier with a ton of stacked bracelets and way too many rings. This is a perfectly acceptable gown otherwise. I like the lower skirt and the open back with the bow. Her styling is so pretty too, I don’t remember seeing her hair curly like that before .
When announcing the winner of best Actor in a Mini-Series, Darren Criss, Amber called him “Daniel,” but it wasn’t a glaring mistake. I didn’t even notice.

There are two more people in Lhuillier! I told you they dressed more women than anyone. First here’s Isla Fisher, who seems to have been stuck with the same designer as Heidi Klum. (I mean technically everyone had the same designer but they must have a team of people. Like Amber and Kaley’s dresses look similar to each other too.) This is just bad with those giant stripes in scalloped lace.
Finally, I would say that Emmy Rossum got the best Lhuillier but that’s just because I like her. There’s something off about the bustline and I don’t like that dusty rose color but it would be amazing without the gathered top. The rest of the dress is amazing and I love the criss cross fabric along the waist.

Look, let’s get it out of the way. This is not going to be an insightful post about the way entertainment reflects our world. It’s an astounded, curious, scientific one, as in “WTF is it about these two?”

As a professional gossip/fashion blogger, you can always tell which women have the biggest red carpet contracts, because the companies paying them to wear a certain label or a certain brand of jewelry or a certain shoe will blast out promotional emails to everyone. The longer and more detailed the email, the more money being paid to that actress/celebrity. So it was with Lady Gaga. The Oscar campaign has been happening since August. Gaga has been groomed into this perfectly behaved robot who only tells the same four stories over and over in every interview. Bradley Cooper stays mostly silent, looking on proudly. They tried to play it perfectly. They were expecting Gaga’s entrance and presence at the Golden Globes to be the biggest moment of the night. And everything was going to plan… until the Hollywood Foreign Press Association flipped the script on all of A Star Is Born’s Oscar campaigning. ASIB was shut out of every category except Best Song. It was…amazing.
As I said, you can always tell who is getting the most money. Gaga wore a custom Valentino gown in what I would call an icy blue? Her hair was dyed blue to match, and all of that blue became the backdrop for her amazing Tiffany’s diamonds. We got the email from Tiffany’s – Gaga wore over 300 “sustainably sourced Tiffany diamonds,” all of which were in pieces specifically designed for Gaga. It wouldn’t surprise me at all if Gaga was getting paid seven figures to wear Tiffany’s jewelry exclusively during the awards season, or maybe it was just a one-time contract for the Globes. In any case, Gaga was decked out and dressed for the moment. She expected to be on that stage, winning Best Actress. It did not happen. She did get on stage for Best Song, so at least she had that.
Bradley Cooper didn’t get that! Don’t forget, those snubs were yet another blow to his Oscar chances too – there was some talk, months ago, of Bradley running the table with big awards for Best Director and Best Actor and Best Picture. Oh well. He even walked the carpet with his partner/girlfriend Irina Shayk, something they rarely do. She wore custom Versace, by the way. CB thinks Irina has new lips.

We need to talk about Regina King. Specifically, we need to talk about what an epic display of Showing Your F-cking Work Regina King displayed at the Golden Globes. First, there’s her work in If Beale Street Could Talk. As Lainey told you a few days ago, Regina King is extraordinary in it. It’s a pe…
A humble prediction: these two are going to be the least talked-about Globe attendees – and one of them won.
Not that I think anything should have gone down differently. Elisabeth Moss was deservedly beat by Sandra Oh, which got us one of the greatest moments of the broadcast. And Rachel Brosnah…
The 2019 Golden Globes were not good. In recent years, we’ve been spoiled with hosts like Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, and did I mention Tina Fey and Amy Poehler? Naming Sandra Oh and Andy Samberg seemed promising, and truly, it was an important hire: Sandra Oh has so muh heat right now for Killing Eve, and it’s great to see an Asian woman take on that kind of highly visible role. But good lord, there were maybe TWO funny jokes in their opening monologue out of what was mostly terrible timing and too much earnestness. It was a weird vibe for the *start* of what is usually the most “fun” show of the year.
In addition to that, Sandra WON for Killing Eve and gave one of the cutest speeches, complete with cutaways to her proud parents:
Sandra became the first person to ever speak Korean or thank someone in Korean on stage at the Golden Globes. She’s also the first actress of Asian descent to win for a lead role in more than 40 years.
It was also nice to see Sandra really blow it out, fashion-wise, for the whole night. She was one of the first people on the red carpet, wearing a gorgeous off-white Versace and walking the carpet with her Killing Eve peeps (her costar, Jodie Comer, wore a strange Ralph & Russo gown). Then she changed into several other gowns throughout the night, all of which were gorgeous. So, a mixed bag, but mostly a good mixed bag. And as Sandra said in her very earnest sidenote in the opening, she only took the hosting gig to increase visibility.
