Kim Kardashian and Kanye West arrive on the black carpet at the Cher musical

View this post on Instagram

Merry Christmas ?

A post shared by Kim Kardashian West (@kimkardashian) on Dec 26, 2018 at 3:14pm PST

I’m actually a little bit surprised that Kanye West spent Christmas with his family in California. As we’ve discussed, the Kardashian-Jenners really blow it out for Christmas, with huge parties and photoshoots and extravagant gifts. All of the Kardash-jenner daughters posted tons of photos from Kris’s $1.2 million Christmas party, and Kanye was in a lot of those photos. So, it feels like Kim and Kanye are going through an okay phase. I’m sure by February, Kanye will be back on Twitter, ranting about the Grammys or something. But for now, they’re fine. And what better time to make a huge real estate purchase?

Kim Kardashian and Kanye West have quietly bought a $14 million apartment at Miami’s gleaming “billionaire beach bunker,” sources exclusively tell Page Six. KimYe have bought into the 18-story luxury beachfront tower Faena House, designed by Norman Foster and home to masters of the universe including Goldman Sachs chairman Lloyd Blankfein, hedge-fund billionaire Ken Griffin and Faena co-developer Len Blavatnik.

While reps for Kim and Kanye didn’t comment, sources said KimYe purchased unit 5A, the condo of Alex Blavatnik, the brother of energy billionaire Len, for about $14 million. The four-bedroom, 5?½-bath, 4,700-square-foot apartment with a wraparound terrace at 3325 Collins Ave. had originally been listed for $15.5 million. The building has all the amenities desired by the superrich: a private gym, spa, pool, concierge and underground parking.

The source said, “Kim and Kanye have been spotted viewing the property in the last month, and they are now in contract to buy it for $14 million. The sale is expected to close in January.”

The couple, whose main residence is a sprawling mansion in Hidden Hills, Calif., has long-standing ties to Miami Beach, the original location for the Kardashians’ Dash store. Kanye is a regular at December’s annual Art Basel Miami Beach, and the rapper is said to be down with Faena’s links to the artistic and cultural community.

[From Page Six]

It would be an amazing full-time home, but you know Kim and Kanye are probably only going to spend a few weeks there in the next year. It’s like buying one of the best beach houses ever and then only using it for a two-week annual vacation. You know what else upsets me? “The building has all the amenities desired by the superrich: a private gym, spa, pool, concierge and underground parking.” They’ll have to pay serious $$$ for those 24-7 amenities and then they will barely use them. It’s so wasteful. Ugh.

Angelina Jolie exits the 'Fighting Stigma Through Film Festival' in London

Do you think Angelina Jolie would ever run for political office? Ten years ago, five years ago, even two years ago, I would have said no way. I would have said that Angelina feels like she can do the most good by working the system from the outside. But in the first heat of Angelina and Brad Pitt’s divorce, there were claims that Brad was disconcerted by Angelina’s gradual move to politics, and that she seemed to be moving towards a political career… in the UK. I thought that was just part of his smear campaign, just an attempt to paint Angelina as a harpy who made him unhappy in every way. But considering that 2018 was the year where women stood up and said “f–k this, I’m running for office,” I’m starting to wonder if Angelina’s long-term plan is going to focused on UK politics. She’s building a real life for herself in the UK, and now this:

Angelina Jolie has joined an upcoming BBC current affairs show for children set to land in 2019. Our World, which Jolie will executive produce, will begin as a 10-episode weekly program aimed at promoting global media literacy among children aged 7-12. According to BBC-commissioned U.K. research, seven is the age that children become aware of the news and 12.6 is the average age a U.S. child signs up for a social media account, so the time between “represents a window to instill in children the value of asking questions and a chance to develop critical thinking.”

“There has never been a time when it was more important to introduce the next generation to objective, impartial news and factual explanation of the events and issues shaping our world,” said Jolie. “Children today are exposed to a lot of opinion, but not necessarily to information that is fact-based and reliable.” Jolie added: “As a mother, I am very pleased that the BBC World Service is taking this step. It is also important to me that the project is global, and will help young people in different countries to be connected to each other and to have greater awareness and understanding of the news on an international basis.”

This project aims to be global in scope, engaging children from Argentina to Zimbabwe. It will kick off with an English version but the BBC will seek production partners to expand programming into multiple languages.

Our World will be a multimedia project with digital and broadcast elements, including a weekly half-hour TV show. The BBC will launch a 10-week trial of the project and is in talks with a number of international digital and broadcast media organizations interested in co-production and distribution. The pilot TV programs will be distributed via the World Service’s existing TV partnerships and via other suitable broadcasters internationally.

[From The Hollywood Reporter]

Maybe I’m dating myself, but I grew up with this kind of thing in my classroom – Channel One was a fixture of my public school education from, like, grades 5 through 10? It was a news broadcast for kids and used as an educational supplement, and the news was pretty international, looking back on it. This sounds like a great project for Angelina, and for kids around the world. It’s true that kids understand a lot more than we think they do, and even if they’re not able to process every single thing that’s happening in the world, it’s good to expose them to specialized programming that doesn’t talk down to them. Will Angelina need to spend more time in the UK to executive produce this show?

Before the smear campaign, before the Royal Sussex Tour, before all of it collided into shambles, I said that it was notable to see how quickly Meghan Markle was being folded into the royal family. Meghan and Prince Harry’s courtship was fast for royalty, and the Queen seemed especially keen to accept Meghan quickly, and to show her the ropes and do events with her. I said at the time that the Queen was making a point of accepting Meghan and being SEEN accepting Meghan. The Queen is crafty and smart – she knows that there will be hell to pay long-term if the royal family wages a racist and hateful campaign against the first woman of color to marry a blood prince. The Queen also knows that it’s good for the monarchy, long-term, if the family actually starts to look like the racially diverse people who recognize the Queen as THEIR Queen. It sounds obvious. But “royal experts” get paid to say this sh-t on camera.

The Queen sees Meghan Markle as a “very useful tool” for the monarchy, a royal expert has claimed. Her Maj is said to be very fond of the Duchess of Sussex – despite reports of a seething rift between Meghan and sister-in-law Kate Middleton.

But a royal expert says that the Queen also views Meghan, 37, as a “useful tool” for modernising the royal family. And she claims in a new documentary that the former Hollywood actress – who married Prince Harry in May – may have helped secure the House of Windsor for decades.

Imogen Lloyd, Royal Contributor for US station ABC, appears in the new documentary Meghan’s New Life: The Real Princess Diaries. In the programme, Ms Lloyd says: “The Queen is incredibly smart. The Queen sees Meghan as a very useful tool in securing and symbolising the future of the monarchy for decades to come.”

[From The Sun]

I think this is true and also… it’s going to be more difficult than the Queen initially thought. It seems like it’s going to be a more delicate balance than previously believed, with the racist press smearing Meghan at every turn, and Work-Shy Will throwing tantrums and the Keen Defenders wanting to classify Meghan and Harry as “minor royals” now. Oh, well. The Queen did what she could.

Meanwhile, this clip has gone viral – allegedly, William is giving Meghan the cold shoulder here. I don’t doubt that he’s given her the cold shoulder in general, but I don’t think that’s what’s happening in this video.

Margot Robbie is a lovely person, but I generally find her to be a boring interview. That wasn’t the case here, with her Porter Magazine interview. They did a long-read with Margot and they covered a lot of subjects, from her role in Mary Queen of Scots (where she plays Queen Elizabeth I), to her costar Joe Alwyn (she didn’t know about his relationship with Taylor Swift), to Once Upon a Time in Hollywood (where she plays Sharon Tate) to MeToo and a lot more. You can read the full Porter piece here. Some highlights:

On working with Quentin Tarantino: “That’s a life goal. When I first sat down with my team in America and they asked me what I wanted out of my career, I said: ‘Pie in the sky? Tarantino.’ Everyone asks me: ‘How is it? How is he on set?’ I’ve been on sets for pretty much the last 10 years and I still walk on and think, ‘This is soooooooo coooool! Look at that! That’s amazing! Oh my gosh!’ I’m like a kid in a candy shop and then Tarantino walks on and he’s got the same, if not more, enthusiasm and he’s so excited. It’s his film set and he’s not jaded at all – he’s just so happy to be there.”

Whether she Polanski to speak about his wife? “No, I didn’t, but he wrote a book and there’s so much detail in there that I actually didn’t need to.”

She didn’t come from wealth: “I had the best upbringing. I know that I can get by with very little money. I know how to do it. I’ve done it and I’m not scared of it.”

Marrying Tom Ackerley & working with him: “I always thought, ‘Urrgghhhh, being married sounds really boring.’ I thought I might bite the bullet in my late thirties and see how it goes. I’m a great advocate of doing business with your partner. Being married is actually the most fun ever, life got way more fun somehow. I have a responsibility being someone’s wife, I want to be better.”

On babies: “No! Definitely not. Three days ago my husband stopped by a dog shelter on the way back from the airport, and we now have a pit-bull puppy. We already have a two-year-old [dog] who still acts like a puppy. I love him but he’s a handful, and for the last three days I haven’t slept. I’m like, ‘We’re fostering her for the week,’ and my husband’s saying, ‘No! We’re keeping her.’ And I’m saying, ‘We absolutely cannot and if anything, you are now cementing in my mind that we cannot have kids. I can’t cope with two puppies, let alone children!’ If I’m looking into my future 30 years from now, I want to see a big Christmas dinner with tons of kids there. But definitely not at the moment. That’s 100 percent certain.”

Whether things have gotten better for women post-MeToo: “Definitely, definitely. In terms of people viewing it as a problem that they can say no to. Or even calling it a problem. I’ve said this before, but I didn’t know what constituted as sexual harassment until the #MeToo movement. I’m in my late twenties, I’m educated, I’m worldly, I’ve traveled, I have my own business, and I didn’t know. That’s insane. I didn’t know that you could say, ‘I have been sexually harassed’, without someone physically touching you, that you could say, ‘That’s not OK.’ I had no idea. I now know because I’ve researched what constitutes illegal sexual harassment so as to have negative connotations for your job and how you get paid.”

[From Porter]

“I have a responsibility being someone’s wife, I want to be better.” That’s sort of a weird statement, right? I’m not going to go too deep on it because I think it was just an off-hand comment about how much she loves being married, but it comes across as Stepford-ish. I liked what she said about babies and dogs though – she’s not in the mood to have babies right now, and her husband keeps bringing home puppies.

As for all of her joy about working with Tarantino, all she did was remind me of how problematic this film is going to be. She’s playing Sharon Tate and there are photos of her on the set with a pregnant belly, meaning the film will absolutely feature her murder, I am sure. Ugh. And don’t forget, Emile F–king Hirsch is in this mess too.

Here are some photos of Margot-as-Sharon Tate. Ugh.

Demi Lovato is close with Nick Jonas. She went on tour with him just two years ago and they’ve known each other since they were child actors. They were never romantic that we know of, but she used to date his brother, Joe. Nick even said a couple of years ago that Demi is the third person he calls for advice after his dad and his brother, Joe, and that she advised him to dump his last girlfriend, Olivia Culpo. I guess they weren’t as close in the past years, after Nick started dating Priyanka Chopra, because Nick didn’t even invite Demi to the weddings. (You know why I’m using weddings instead of the singular form. They had three huge receptions that we know about. There was a choreographed dance number and their wedding lasted five DAYS.) You would think Nick would consider Demi, but nope. Here’s what a source told US:

They’ve been pals since their Disney Channel days, but Demi Lovato “wasn’t invited” to Nick Jonas’ December 1 wedding to Priyanka Chopra, a source reveals in the new issue of Us Weekly. “Demi was upset,” says the source. “It broke her heart.”

The couple’s lavish nuptials took place over five days in Jodhpur, India, one month after Lovato, 26, left the rehab facility where she had been recovering from her July 24 drug overdose. Jonas, also 26, voiced his support for the “Sober” singer at the time of the tragedy: “Like all of you I am reeling at the news about Demi,” he wrote on Twitter. “All of us love her and need to pray for her to get well. She is a fighter.”

Lovato currently does not follow Jonas on Instagram. Even so, the source notes, “she wishes him and Priyanka the best.”

[From US Magazine]

Maybe this is one of those cases where Demi just got out of rehab and they thought they were thinking of her feelings by not inviting her. But they should have asked her anyway! Can you imagine seeing your close friend have three huge wedding receptions and you weren’t invited? I’m sure some of you have similar stories. It surely happens all the time. People see Instagram photos of their friends’ huge weddings and wonder why they weren’t invited. It’s got to make you feel bad, I don’t blame her for talking to US through a source.

Us is also reporting that Demi is happy in her new relationship, with clothing designer Henry Levy, whom she met in rehab a few years ago and reconnected with recently. A source tells them Demi is “totally head over heels” for Henry and that she’s “happy, healthy, sober, eating well and working out religiously.” I hope this lasts for her and that if it doesn’t, it doesn’t jeopardize her sobriety. The new guy does seem like a good influence, but she could be alone for a minute.

U.S. NEW YORK MICHAEL COHEN SENTENCE

Well, this is certainly interesting. Back in the day, when the Steele Dossier was first revealed by Buzzfeed, many of us (myself included) concentrated on the most salacious details, like the possible existence of a pee tape. But Christopher Steele was a quality investigator and intelligence officer who had connections far and wide, and one of the claims in the dossier was that Trump’s personal lawyer, Michael Cohen, had gone to Prague to meet with Russian officials in the heat of the 2016 campaign. Cohen denied the dossier’s claim repeatedly. Well, guess what?

A mobile phone traced to President Donald Trump’s former lawyer and “fixer” Michael Cohen briefly sent signals ricocheting off cell towers in the Prague area in late summer 2016, at the height of the presidential campaign, leaving an electronic record to support claims that Cohen met secretly there with Russian officials, four people with knowledge of the matter say.

During the same period of late August or early September, electronic eavesdropping by an Eastern European intelligence agency picked up a conversation among Russians, one of whom remarked that Cohen was in Prague, two people familiar with the incident said.

The phone and surveillance data, which have not previously been disclosed, lend new credence to a key part of a former British spy’s dossier of Kremlin intelligence describing purported coordination between Trump’s campaign and Russia’s election meddling operation.

The dossier, which Trump has dismissed as “a pile of garbage,” said Cohen and one or more Kremlin officials huddled in or around the Czech capital to plot ways to limit discovery of the close “liaison” between the Trump campaign and Russia.

[From McClatchy]

I’m not going to pretend that this is the smoking gun – it’s not. It’s not great for Cohen or Trump, but it’s not a smoking gun. What strikes me is how, long-term, how MUCH of Steele’s work has ended up being verified independently though. There really is nothing in the dossier which has been flatly false or wrong. The broad strokes and many of the details are turning out to be completely true. Which means… the pee tape is probably true too, right?

Elsa Pataky presents Gioseppo Woman

I know that there are many people who will argue that Elsa Pataky is a big celebrity in Spain, and perhaps in Europe, but for years now, I’ve believed that Elsa basically only gets work because her husband pulls strings with his powerful and well-connected friends. Like, I’m sure Elsa gets *some* gigs on her own, but I absolutely believe that Chris Hemsworth has called up various studio executives and directors and suggested that they give Elsa a job.

Elsa and Chris currently live in Byron Bay, Australia, having moved there from LA a couple of years ago. The move was an effort, mainly on Chris’s part, to limit the exposure and overexposure of his family. I felt a bit bad for Elsa – so far away from home, so far away from meetings in LA and Europe, isolated because she liked to pap stroll, basically. So, somehow, Elsa got a job on the Netflix show Tidelands, which shoots in Australia (not far from Elsa and Chris’s home). Elsa chatted with the Sunday Morning Herald about living in Australia, the new show, and how she won’t go back to LA:

Who she is in real life: In Tidelands, she is somewhat ethereal, and there is a beach – but she is more of a murderous, evil, vengeance-seeking half-siren with very few angelic tendancies. The real Elsa, she says, is probably somewhere in between. “Nobody knows how I really am. The first time they gave me a role in my life, it was a show in Spain, I don’t know why but I was the evil character … I was going out and people would look at me and hate me. When you play a role like that, you find a lot of your own things that [you didn’t know were there] and secrets inside you come out. I feel like I can probably have both sides – angel and evil. If I can play a role like that I can probably be a bit evil.”

Raising her kids in Byron Bay: “It is my dream, I always wanted to be in a place like [Byron Bay]. Growing up I was very happy in nature, with animals, and I dreamed of living in a place where my kids can run around with no shoes on, surrounded by all kinds of animals – dangerous and not dangerous.”

She plans to stay in Australia: “I’ll never live in LA again,” she says with the voice of someone who has been through the kind of wringer only a city like Los Angeles can create. “We will travel back there for work when we need to, but I can’t see myself living in a city again.”

Getting the gig on Tidelands: “It was meant to be in a way. I haven’t been working for a while because I have been taking care of my family and really focused on that. I wanted to start working again but we travel around following Chris and his projects… I was just so sick of travelling. This project was just two hours from my house … and I loved the role, I really liked the script and I really wanted to do it.”

[From SMH]

Maybe I’m being unfair to Elsa and I’m not giving her enough agency as a woman – maybe it’s as she says, and she was all for the move to Australia, and she was tired of LA and all of that. But as I’ve said before, a thirst like Elsa’s doesn’t get quenched overnight. And why should it? Elsa is a hustler. She did more to promote Chris’s films than he did. She used to have a million little side gigs and that made her happy. Maybe she’s changed. Or maybe she’s just doing all of this for her marriage.

Here’s the trailer for Tidelands. It just looks like a dumb soap opera with some vague sci-fi elements?

skincareheader

I learned a lot from you on our last skincare post! I am 45 with normal to dry skin and need to make sure that future posts about skincare and products are more inclusive. So this has some products for blemish prone skin as well. Some of you mentioned Korean skincare. After reading about it, I splurged on the Costco Case Full of Seoul kit. It was on sale for $100 which felt like a lot to spend on skincare but it was $50 off. I would only recommend about 3-4 products from it, some of which are below. You don’t need the whole kit to get results and can try some of the products from Amazon.

My skin is so smooth and soft now. Plus the tiny blackheads on my nose are much less noticeable. It’s unclear if the difference is due to the new skincare or the skincare plus the microneedling I mentioned earlier. While I think the microroller definitely worked, I’m not 100% sold on it as I noticed tiny little marks. (No one else notices them and with makeup on they’re invisible. Plus they are fading over time.)

The first part of this post reflects some of the k-beauty routine I follow. It feels luxurious and once you do it for a couple of days it becomes routine. Toward the end are products for oily skin.

An oil cleanser that melts into your skin and rinses off clean

One of the keys to the k-beauty regime is the two step oil then foaming cleansing system. Almost every article I read (this one was the most informative, thanks Lena) recommended this product, Banila Clean It Zero. Reviewers say it melts into your skin, dissolves makeup easily and is moisturizing. However some people with acne prone skin say that it can cause breakouts.

A gentle exfoliating foaming rice cleanser
amazon_foamingricecleanser
9 Wishes Rice foaming cleanser is the exact cleanser I’m using and I love it! I’m definitely replacing it once it runs out. It is strong enough to remove eye makeup without being abrasive, and it leaves your face feeling so clean without feeling tight or dry. It has micro-ground rice powder so it helps slough away dead skin and impurities without damage. Other gentle, low PH foaming cleansers with great reviews include Hada Labo Rohto Gokujyn Hyaluronic Acid Cleansing Foam, and Corsx Low PH Good Morning Gel cleanser.

A non-drying clarifying toner for brighter skin
amazon_klairstoner
I’m using May Coop raw sauce, which came in my Costco kit. It’s decent but not incredible and I will replace it with an alternate toner. Experts recommend either Cosrx AhA/BHA Clarifying Treatment Toner or a Mizon toner, which has mixed reviews. The Klairs Supple Preparation toner has a lot of product for the price and people rave about it, calling it refreshing and moisturizing yet light. I’ve found the toner I’m going to buy once mine runs out!

A serum to repair skin before moisturizing and applying sunblock
amazon_klairsserum
Urang true rose repair essence came in my kit. It’s good and I sort-of recommend it but it’s expensive and hard to find. Klair’s rich moist soothing serum is positively reviewed and seems to be the best alternative. Reviewers say it’s good for all skin types, even oily, and that it adds a layer of moisture and makes your skin look radiant. (An alternative for oily skin might be this Essence Korean Skin Care spray.)

An anti-aging serum set that can fade acne scars and age spots
amazon_antiaging
I wasn’t going to include this set but then I read the reviews and now I want these! Users say they reduce pores, fine lines, age spots and scars. They’re also said to even out skin tone, improve texture, and may even reduce under eye bags. Some of the products can be strong, so it’s recommended that you use them sparingly on wet skin right after you wash.

A rich moisturizer to hydrate and plump skin
amazon_snailrepair
While I’m not including sunblock, please include a good sunblock in your skincare routine. My favorite is Neutrogena Ultra Sheer liquid. Before that, you need a good moisturizer and I
would recommend the affordable all-in-one Mizon snail cream. Yes it’s made with actual snail stuff, but you can’t tell. Someone recommended this in our comments years ago and I bought it and loved it. I’ve also used and can recommend this retinol moisturizer, similarly under $20. The exact moisturizer I use now which came in the Costco pack is the May Coop raw moisturizer. It’s good but it’s not $40 good, you know?

A three step acne treatment system for adults and teens
amazon_effaclar
Now we’re into products for acne prone skin. The La Roche-Posay treatment system is affordable and well reviewed. Many people say that it works wonders for their acne, including adult and cystic acne. It can be drying, especially the spot treatment, so you may want to use it just a few times a week and go easy on the spot treatment until your skin is used to it. The moisturizer is a good companion product, people with very oily skin say it’s effective, but that it’s pricey.

A glycolic acid toning solution for clear skin
amazon_glycolicacid
So many of you recommended products by The Ordinary, particularly this glycolic acid toning solution. Many people say this cured their acne and that it also works on fine lines. Some people say it feels sticky but the consensus is that the results are worth it. At least two of you recommended The Ordinary’s Niacinamide serum for acne as well.

A healing clay mask with over 2k positive reviews
amazon_claymask
This was a recommendation by Joanne, who calls it amazing! Reviews say they mix it with apple cider vinegar or water to extend and make the product easier to spread. It’s supposed to clear acne prone skin and provide results which last for a few days. I’m definitely trying this!

Thanks for reading this post and commenting with your favorite products! I’ve learned so much from you and am really pleased with the results.

ELLE Women in Hollywood 2018

Charlize Theron is the mother of two adopted children, Jackson and August, whom she identifies as her “daughters” in interviews. Jackson and August are both African-American, and there’s always been some conversation about Charlize, a white woman from South African, adopting two black children on her own. In an interview with Sunday Life magazine (via the DM), Charlize talked (again) about being an adoptive mom and the misunderstandings about adoption.

On parenting: “Ultimately, I know that I’m a great mum when I’m in a good place. But there is such a stigma around the idea of [asking for] help, or not being able to do it all yourself, or do it perfectly. We have to destigmatize it and say there’s no shame in that game.”

On adoption, Charlize feels, is still misunderstood. She bristles, for instance, at the notion of adopters being seen as doing something “good”, as “saving” children, and at the idea that not looking like your child is somehow problematic. “I think babies pick us as much as we pick them, so the idea that those packages are going to look exactly like you is such a myth. I believe that. The children ultimately find you.”

A story about taking Jackson to a grocery store. As a multiracial family, Charlize and her children come in for some, at times, uncomfortable attention. “Someone was touching my kid’s hair in the supermarket. I mean, stop! You can’t do that. How would you feel if I walked up to you and did that? People have good intentions, but they say the worst things. It’s ignorance, a lack of knowledge. We have to start talking about it properly.”

Staying fit, she says, is a pleasure. “I’ve never been a couch potato – I love to do yoga for an hour and a half. Not moving is not good for my head. I dealt with depression for the whole shoot and afterwards, until my body kind of equalised itself.”

[From The Daily Mail]

“I think babies pick us as much as we pick them…” I’ve heard other adoptive mothers say similar things, but I don’t know how much I believe that. It goes to the debate of nature vs. nurture and fate and what is “meant to be.” I don’t think babies are fated to be with a certain parent, just as I don’t believe babies are these clean slates whose personalities are entirely shaped by nurturing and environment. It’s a combination of everything, but I completely understand how Charlize feels like her kids were “meant to be” with her. As for people coming up to touch her kids’ hair… what is wrong with people? For the love of God.
