Here are some photos of Natalie Portman last night, fresh off her day-long BEEF with Jessica Simpson. I jest – Jessica and Natalie’s beef was more of a misunderstanding, and they worked it out like adults. After they worked it out, Natalie attended the LA premiere of her film, Vox Lux. She wore this satin Dior suit which… is okay? I would have loved to see Natalie in something a bit crazier – she is playing a costume-wearing pop star, after all – but this is fine. I’m also including photos of Jude Law, her Vox Lux costar, wearing his favorite drop-crotch pants.

The root of Natalie’s beef with Jessica Simpson was some off-hand comments Natalie made to USA Today during an interview. While the Jessica comments were arguably the most notable part of the piece, the whole piece is pretty good – you can read it here. Some highlights:

On gun violence: “I think all of us as citizens are at the sort of tipping point of saying it’s enough, it’s too much. And it’s not possible that our government can ignore more than 12,000 people killed this year alone by other citizens.”

Pop stars have it worse than actors: “People who succeed in music, their fandom is much larger than any actor, and it’s them as themselves whereas actors are in character. There’s a difference in expectation.”

On Madonna: “I felt really lucky to have her as a little kid, because I saw someone who was brazen and disobedient and provocative and trying to mess with people and always changing – I thought it was a great thing to see in a woman growing up.”

On working with her husband again for Vox Lux: “He knows how to make me look my best, work with my strengths and avoid the weaknesses, of which there are many.”

[From USA Today]

I didn’t realize that Benjamin Millepied did the choreography for Natalie’s concert/performance scenes in Vox Lux. This seems…interesting? “He knows how to make me look my best, work with my strengths and avoid the weaknesses, of which there are many.” The last time they worked together, it turned out that Natalie did very little of the ballet dancing which was the centerpiece of her Oscar campaign, and that Benjamin was part of the conspiracy to make it sound like Natalie had become a professional-style ballerina in 18 months, when the whole time he knew that ballerina Sarah Lane was the one doing almost all of the full-body dance shots in Black Swan. Just FYI – I’ve never forgotten that.

The Golden Globe nominations came down this morning and you guys, who is going to tell the HFPA that they forgot about Atlanta? It’s a lot, I know, there is SO much television. It’s impossible to watch everything and hard to keep up with new episodes, but even with all the clamoring competition, Atl…

Sandra Bullock is promoting her post apocalyptic horror movie streaming on Netflix, Bird Box. Netflix, for all its internal problems, is really killing it lately. They just announced that their new family-friendly Christmas movie, The Christmas Chronicles starring Kurt Russell as a hot Santa, got 20 million streams in just a week. (I thought it was really cute.) Bird Box is out December 21 and while it probably won’t get that many views, it’s sure to do well. Entertainment Tonight has a press junket interview with Sandra and her costar, Trevante Rhodes (Moonlight). Sandra, 54(!), was asked if she knew what came up when you google her and she said she didn’t want to know, but thought it was breast enhancement. When interviewer Kevin Frazier said it was mostly about how she hasn’t aged she joked that she sleeps in a special chamber, but then got real-ish about it, admitting that it took over two hours to do her hair and makeup. After that she and Trevante joked about getting competitive with their fitness on set and it was so cute. You could tell they’re close and I came away from this wanting to hear more from him. The video is on ET Online and here are some excerpts.

On google results that say she doesn’t age
Sandra: I’m sleeping in a container that is devoid of of outside carcinogens, that helps lift what you don’t have and – come on, please! The only time you see me is when I do press junkets. Do you know how many hours of hair and makeup this took? Two and a half hours!

I’m going to work this look all day today and then I’m going to go home and take a shower and then it’s going to happen again at eight o’clock in the morning. I’m never out in the world where I get photographed unless it’s things like that. I just look my best.

Trevante: Before set every day, she would show up in her workout [gear].

She gushed about Trevante’s workouts and his constant reading
Sandra: There’s a little competition. He gets up at like four and works out for two hours at the gym. Carries around his little jug of water. Constantly hydrating. In between shots, Trey would be up on some rock or some tree just reading. Like reading poetry, philosophy. You just stop and you went ‘that’s real.’ That wasn’t for show because he was tucked away somewhere. He’s constantly looking inward.

I get annoyed at how long it takes to get a blowout when I get my hair done once a month. Some people find it relaxing to get pampered like that, but it’s not like you’re getting a massage or a body wrap, you have to sit upright. It must get tiresome to have to sit for two and a half hours of hair and makeup. (Yes most of us would rather do that than our regular job and I know it sounds ridiculous to complain about getting my hair done.) Let me anticipate the comments about Sandra not being honest about getting Botox and fillers – is she supposed to bring that up in this joint interview with her costar and potentially derail the conversation? She knows she’s supposed to keep it light and make jokes so that’s what she did. (Remember how weird it was when hack Megyn Kelly asked Jane Fonda about her plastic surgery during an interview with Robert Redford?)

Sandra’s face isn’t that distracting to me, I found her wonderful and believable in Oceans 8, and she’s only doing what’s expected in her industry. Also more of Trevante please.

32nd American Cinematheque Award Presentation Honoring Bradley Cooper

Again, I apologize for the mistakes I made in the Golden Globes nominations posts! I feel like the Globes organizers could really find a better way to announce their nominations in descending order of importance, and really try to separate the TV and film nominations, because the way they’re doing it now has left a lot of people feeling scattered. That’s just my “how the sausage is made” complaint. Anyway, as everyone has gotten a chance to digest the 2019 Globes nominations, there are some even larger snubs which are worth discussing. Like, for the second year in a row, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association failed to recognize any female director.

No female directors were honored by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association when the 76th Golden Globe nominations were unveiled on Thursday. The nominees for best director include Bradley Cooper for A Star is Born, Alfonso Cuaron for Roma, Peter Farrelly for Green Book, Spike Lee for BlacKkKlansman and Adam McKay for Vice.

During the 2018 ceremony, presenter Natalie Portman pointedly criticized the lack of female nominees during the televised show. Portman went off script and stated, “And here are all the male nominees.”

Barbara Streisand remains the only woman to ever win the best director prize. She was the first female director to be nominated and won in 1984 for Yentl. Streisand was again nominated in 1992 for The Prince of Tides. Only four women have been nominated in the category following Streisand. In 1994, Jane Campion was nominated for The Piano, while Sofia Coppola earned a nomination in 2004 for Lost in Translation, Kathryn Bigelow in 2010 for The Hurt Locker and in 2013 for Zero Dark Thirty and Ava DuVernay in 2015 for Selma.

[From The Hollywood Reporter]

I’ve seen a list of female directors who all had critically acclaimed films this year, like Chloe Zhao, Tamara Jenkins and Lynne Ramsay. But… I feel like the “all dudes” snub at the Globes was much more notable last year, when Greta Gerwig’s critically acclaimed Lady Bird was picking up nominations across the board… except Gerwig couldn’t get nominated for any major Best Director award for months, until people made a big deal about it, then she was nominated for a DGA and Oscar for directing. While I respect the fact that female directors are never afforded the same room to be recognized for their achievements… I don’t think this is another Gerwig/Lady Bird situation. But it’s a good conversation to have, because it increases awareness and puts the spotlight onto the directors guild boys club.

Also snubbed: This Is Us, Maniac, Westworld and… Ryan Coogler, who directed Black Panther. I think that snub is less about race and more about how superhero films aren’t considered “directing” achievements. Still, if Peter Farrelly can get nominated for Green Book, they might want to consider giving Coogler something at long last, especially since Coogler has been turning in wonderful films for years. Still, it’s good that Spike Lee got nominated!

A post shared by CARDIVENOM (@iamcardib) on Dec 5, 2018 at 3:17pm PST

Less than 24 hours after Cardi B announced her split from husband Offset, she posted the first-ever social media photo of their daughter Kulture (seen above). Kulture is a cutie! Beautiful baby! I feel like people keep forgetting that Cardi only gave birth to Kulture in JULY. Cardi was back at work and back on red carpets within a matter of like six weeks after giving birth. In fact, I feel like a lot of the shenanigans around Cardi post-July can be explained by “postpartum hormones.”

Speaking of, even though Cardi sounded pretty mature about her breakup/separation from Offset, there was soooo much drama leading up to the split. Offset has been cheating on Cardi the whole time, and he recently got caught up in a situation where his texts to another woman were published online. He texted his mistress, a woman named Summer Bunni, and was requesting a threesome with her and a Cardi-esque rapped named Cuban Doll. According to TMZ, Cardi wasn’t just pissed about Offset’s texts to another woman, she was pissed off that Cuban Doll is trying to copy her vibe. And now Summer Bunni has gone to TMZ to apologize to Cardi for the whole thing:

The woman with whom Offset allegedly cheated — not long before Cardi B gave birth — says she’s remorseful, and tells TMZ … she never wanted to be a homewrecker. Summer Bunni cried openly while telling us how guilty she feels after word got out her hooking up with Cardi’s husband might have been a catalyst in the couple’s split. SB is the woman Offset allegedly asked to arrange a threesome that would include rapper Cuban Doll.

Summer tells us she hasn’t messed with Offset since Cardi had their baby, Kulture, but still feels ashamed for playing any role in breaking up their marriage. She insists she didn’t know how serious Offset and Cardi were — which seems absurd. They were married! Bunni hasn’t spoken directly to Cardi, but she tried to deliver an apology through us, and says she hopes the estranged couple will reconcile.

As we reported, Cardi says she and her “baby daddy” are still friends, but the love is gone.

[From TMZ]

Yeah… I hope Cardi and Offset do not get back together. I can’t believe there are actually fans out there, hoping for a reconciliation. Cardi and Offset were a mess together, and their divorce is going to be messy too. Mostly, I want Cardi to just take some time off and spend time with her baby. I think that would be good for her – a chance to reboot and get some distance and all that.
