On Martin Luther King Day, racist pig Jeremy Clarkson decided to finally apologize to the Duchess of Sussex for his grotesque screed, which was published in the Sun one month ago. Clarkson’s “apology” was a lot like everything else he does: self-centered, long-winded, legendary in his own mind, and short on humility and contrition. It was clear that since the Sun published his horrid column, Clarkson has gotten a taste of the kind of public shunning he fantasized for Meghan. Soon after he posted his fauxpology, the Sussexes released a statement saying yes, Clarkson did email on Christmas day – but he only addressed the email to Meghan’s husband. He still hasn’t apologized to Meghan, the woman he wanted to strip naked and parade down the street while people threw feces at her. The Sussexes, as you can imagine, do not accept Clarkson’s apology.
Soon after that, Variety’s sources announced that Amazon would be parting ways with Clarkson. Clarkson does The Grand Tour and Clarkson’s Farm on Amazon Prime, and while there are still episodes left to air, after that, Amazon wants out of the Jeremy Clarkson business. It seemed connected to his misogyny and racism towards Meghan, right? Wrong, says the Telegraph:
Amazon is reportedly ending its contract with Jeremy Clarkson, in what appears to be another intervention in the culture wars. Except that may not be entirely the case. The original story in Hollywood trade bible Variety reported that the presenter is “likely” to part ways with Amazon following “the conclusion of existing agreements.” There’s another series of The Grand Tour and another of two of Clarkson’s Farm on the way, but Variety claims the streaming giant won’t be commissioning the curmudgeonly columnist beyond that. Is this, as many assume, a moral stance over his desire for crowds to throw excrement at Meghan Markle?
While the presenter admitted that Amazon were “incandescent” over his controversial column in The Sun, there are other reasons for the deal to end. It’s true that the streaming service won’t be working with Clarkson beyond seasons of The Grand Tour and Clarkson’s Farm that have already been commissioned. This does mean, however, that he’ll be on screen in one form or another until 2025. One senior figure connected to Amazon told the Telegraph that “any speculation that this has anything to do with anything like that [Harry and Meghan] is nonsense.”
“Amazon’s only interest in anything it makes or sells is does it make a profit?” says one media analyst. “This is a company that sells Mein Kampf, the Communist Manifesto, the Big Book of Serial Killers and Prime Video has a documentary on Charles Manson’s final words. I don’t think Jeremy Clarkson is quite in that league.”
Amazon was under no illusions about Clarkson’s controversial behaviour when it signed the former Top Gear team for a very healthy £160 million back in 2016 – he’d been sacked by the BBC in 2015 for punching one of Top Gear’s producers in the face after being told the team’s hotel couldn’t prepare Clarkson a sirloin steak late at night. Co-presenter James May later explained the fracas by comparing Clarkson and co to the Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin or professional footballers.
Just in case anyone is keeping track, Clarkson said the n-word on camera in 2014-ish and he was able to keep his job on the BBC. Then he punched someone over a steak in 2015, then he was finally fired from the BBC that same year. Then in 2016, he got this massive Amazon contract and Americans still don’t give a sh-t. I literally howled at this though: “Amazon’s only interest in anything it makes or sells is does it make a profit?” OMG, someone taught a British media analyst how LITERALLY EVERY BUSINESS WORKS. The comparison to Adolf Hitler and Karl Marx was top shelf too, you can really tell that British people are enormously salty that their favorite violent, misogynistic racist won’t get paid tens of millions of dollars to drive cars and be a f–king pig. This, too, is a culture war! Jesus H.
Meanwhile, it’s also looking like Clarkson might be sacked from his ITV gig hosting Who Wants to be a Millionaire? ITV’s CEO Carolyn McCall has been trying to calm lawmakers who are outraged that a psycho like Clarkson is still employed on ITV.
It’s genuinely funny (in a pathetic way) to watch the British media grapple with the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s many successes. A hugely successful Netflix docuseries, check. A popular children’s book, check. The #1 podcast on Spotify, check. Huge ratings for every television interview, check. And now the #1 New York Times bestseller, check. This is why every British royal commentator is dusting off YouGov polls and Newsweek polls and crying about the Sussexes’ “popularity.” They are actively trying to convince their readers that Harry and Meghan are historically “unpopular,” despite all evidence to the contrary. Besides, with the brand Meghan and Harry have built for themselves in America and internationally, they really don’t need to have “the support” of the YouGov respondents.

Not only is Prince Harry’s a #1 NYT nonfiction bestseller, it’s selling out all over the world. Spare sold more than 64,000 print copies in Australia in its first week, “blitzing the previous record for the genre by nearly 45,000.” In Australia, more than 120,000 copies have been sold overall (meaning people are also buying the Audible or ebook copies at an equal rate as the print copy). In Germany, bookstores are selling the German-language and English-language editions of Spare, and both versions are selling out. Spare is also a massive bestseller in the Dutch market.
In Germany, #PrinceHarry’s #Spare is dominating the bestsellers list with German edition Reserve in the #1 spot & two English editions rounding out the top 3. The 100K books sold has it on track to be the best-selling non-fiction book in a decade. https://t.co/bpXXgUbweY

From Hecate: I got the red yellow mixed color version of the blouse we offered last week. I wore it on Saturday and I kid you not, every place I went, at least one person complimented me on it. My teenage daughter asked to borrow it, which is high praise for teenage talk. I love the print and the fabric blouses really well. It’s everything I wanted. I was so happy with it, I bought the same shirt in the houndstooth. Here are some more things CB and I are looking at on Amazon.
A cute credit card wallet you can move from purse to purse
From Hecate: Coming off the holiday season, I was reminded how many cute clutches and evening bags I have and no wallets that fit them. AXONEL has these little keychain credit card clutches that hold plenty of cards, licenses and stubs and there’s a zippered portion for cash. Plus it has a hook so you can attach it inside your handbag for security. Or your belt loop if you decide to slip this in your pocket for a hands free night. Or, you know, an actual key. It comes in five different colors that cost $16 each. Over 700 people gave these 4.2 stars and Fakespot rated them an A. Customers loved it for its simplicity, “It is adorable, perfect size and weight.” And it works either in addition to a larger wallet or on its own, “I’ve used this every single day since I’ve gotten it which is quite a while and impressive because normally I get tired of wallets really fast.”
A well-priced crisp dress shirt for men
From Hecate: Valentines is coming up and there is little sexier than a man in a crisp white shirt. Amazon has this J.Ver shirt on sale for $20. But if white doesn’t have enough wow for you, this shirt comes in a bunch of colors, both jewel tones and pastels. And it’s wrinkle free, so that crispness will last you. Almost 6,000 people gave this shirt 4.4 stars that ReviewMeta confirmed. People say it not only looks good, it feels good, “Bought this for my husband for Christmas. This shirt is so soft.” And the fit works on a variety of people, “Shirt feels really good. I’m a big guy with longer arms but this shirt fit great.” Two notes: It’s a casual shirt, but some customers were able to wear it with a tie. And there’s no reason a woman couldn’t wear this, it’s a great looking shirt. Get one for yourself.
An ice roller to treat puffiness and migraines
From Heacte: I had a weird allergic reaction to something, I still don’t know what. While I was trying to figure it out, just about the only thing that made me feel better is my little Rose Quartz roller that gave me instant relief. But it warmed up pretty quickly. I wish I’d had one of these ice rollers. BAIMEI has a roller to help reduce normal puffiness and also assists with migraine pain. This roller comes with a jade Gua Sha that helps with lifting skin for fine lines and circulation. The roller itself comes in a variety of roller and handle color combinations. And most are on sale for $10 this week. This has over 700 reviews, 4.5 stars and the same score on ReviewMeta. This person said they’ve already seen a difference, “This really truly has changed my neck. I look more sculpted and firm. I look less swollen.” And others say the products will last you, “The ice roller feels so good and both products are very sturdy. I dropped the Gua sha so many times into hard surfaces and it did not crack or break.”
A reusable lint roller picks up so much dog and cat hair
From CB: Now that I have a German Shepherd I notice his hair all over the white tile in my bathrooms! I used to wet swiffer but it’s a lot of work. I bought two reusable lint rollers to compare them and this one definitely works the best. It picks up dog hair so much easier than wet towels or a swiffer. I like it so much I’ve ordered another one. To reuse it you just rinse and let it dry. It’s really easy to use and is super sticky even after rinsing. This has over 1,800 ratings, 4 stars and a B on Fakespot. Most people like it as much as I do. Some people warn not to use the cover as it can get stuck to the roll. “Sooooo easy to clean and I love that it’s reusable.” It really works! It picks up everything! Cleaning is super simple…wash with dish liquid and air dry. Sooo happy I bought this!”
An evening youth serum for smoother, clearer skin
From CB: Evening Youth Serum by trusted brand Tree of Life is vegan and paraben free. It’s formulated with multiple anti-aging ingredients including niacinamide and hyaluronic acid. It has over 1,700 ratings, 4.4 stars and a B on Fakespot. Plus it’s affordable at under $19. Users say that they noticed a difference in the elasticity and appearance of their skin within a few days. “I have been using the serum at nighttime only for about a week and my skin feels softer already and my complexion looks brighter. I have a glow to my skin in the morning.” “I am in my mid-40s and have combination, sensitive skin. I still get periodic mild acne breakouts and have a few wrinkles, and wanted something that would help address both. After two weeks of use, I can honestly say my skin looks and feels better than it has since I was 20. After two days I could see and feel improvement in the surface texture of my face and neck, and within a week I saw a very noticeable improvement in pore size, overall smoothness, and I had ZERO signs of blemishes.”
A large travel mug you’ll want in several colors
From CB: I’ve been seeing the Stanley mugs recently, but they’re so expensive at $40 and up! These insulated 30 ounce mugs by Dynamic SE come in 19 different colors and patterns, all under $20 and some under $15. They have over 11,000 ratings, 4.6 stars and the same score on ReviewMeta. Plus they come with two straws and a straw cleaner! People say they work great and that they fit perfectly in their cup holders. “Nice, heavy duty travel mug. Holds a lot of liquid and keeps the hot things hot.” “Much better quality than I was expecting for the price! The paint is textured and baked on like the brand name cups. I’m not expecting it to chip anytime soon! Will be purchasing more!” “I love this cup! It’s large enough to put plenty of ice in cold drinks, it seals nicely, and it looks so bougee. It doesn’t get slippery with condensation, and it comes with straws. Perfect!”
Car seat hooks hold purses, groceries and more
These under $6 car seat hooks are the number two bestseller on Amazon automotive. (These wiper blades are the top seller.) They have 4.6 stars, over 38,000 reviews and the same score on ReviewMeta. They’re under $6 for four hooks. People rave about how much weight they hold and how convenient they are. “This was easy to hook onto the headrest in my car. I was struggling on where to put my purse or bag whenever I had a passenger. I’d end up putting it on the floor behind the driver’s seat which was annoying to have to reach back for when I needed it. This saves me from that annoyance.” “I hated how my kids just threw their back packs on the floor and their stuff would fall out or cultured the car floor. So this is super useful as a mom of three and it’s already helped keep the car much cleaner.” “Solid plastic build, never have any issues with it falling off or losing a bag. Love it and would highly recommend to anyone. Easy to put on, easy to take off, and not terribly expensive.”

I have a question for the people who have already read Prince Harry’s Spare: how do you think QEII came across in Harry’s narrative? To me, she came across as remote and unengaged with the daily operations of her family and the institution of the monarchy, but it definitely felt like Harry had so much warmth for her, and she for him. Especially in what we now know were the final years of her life – QEII didn’t seem to be aware, whatsoever, of what Harry and Meghan were going through, or how much they were trying to work within the system before they eventually left. One thing Harry makes abundantly clear is that he and his grandmother were in communication until the very end, despite whatever bullsh-t those “palace sources” claim now. Days before QEII passed, Harry spoke to her on the phone from Frogmore Cottage, and he reflected on that call as he made his way to Balmoral on the day she died:
I spent much of the flight staring at the clouds, replaying the last time I’d spoken with Granny. Four days earlier, long chat on the phone. We’d touched on many topics. Her health, of course. The turmoil at Number 10. The Braemar Games—she was sorry about not being well enough to attend. We talked also about the biblical drought. The lawn at Frogmore, where Meg and I were staying, was in terrible shape. Looks like the top of my head, Granny! Balding and brown in patches. She laughed. I told her to take care, I looked forward to seeing her soon.
As the plane began its descent, my phone lit up. A text from Meg. Call me the moment you get this. I checked the BBC website. Granny was gone. Pa was King.
[From Spare by Prince Harry]
I remember the British media was focused, at the time, on the story that QEII invited the Sussexes to visit her in Balmoral that summer but they had turned her down. Now it looks like Harry was, as ever, in regular contact and QEII was alert enough to have a “long chat” with Harry on the phone. Not only that, but he got to introduce QEII to his children during the Jubbly last June:
For days and days [after we returned from QEII’s funeral] we couldn’t stop hugging the children, couldn’t let them out of our sight—though I also couldn’t stop picturing them with Granny. The final visit. Archie making deep, chivalrous bows, his baby sister Lilibet cuddling the monarch’s shins. Sweetest children, Granny said, sounding bemused. She’d expected them to be a bit more…American, I think? Meaning, in her mind, more rambunctious.
…Day and night, images flitted through my mind…. Standing before her during my passing-out parade, shoulders thrown back, catching her half smile. Stationed beside her on the balcony, saying something that caught her off guard and made her, despite the solemnity of the occasion, laugh out loud. Leaning into her ear, so many times, smelling her perfume as I whispered a joke. Kissing both cheeks at one public event, just recently, placing a hand lightly on her shoulder, feeling how frail she was becoming. Making a silly video for the first Invictus Games, discovering that she was a natural comedienne. People around the world howled, and said they’d never suspected she possessed such a wicked sense of humor—but she did, she always did! That was one of our little secrets. In fact, in every photo of us, whenever we’re exchanging a glance, making solid eye contact, it’s clear: We had secrets.
Special relationship, that’s what they said about us, and now I couldn’t stop thinking about the specialness that would no longer be. The visits that wouldn’t take place.
[From Spare, by Prince Harry]
Yeah… Harry was everybody’s favorite, wasn’t he? While Charles was a remote, unaffectionate figure for much of Harry’s life, Charles was still a lot closer to Harry than he was to William. Same with QEII – she had so much affection for the spare. By the end of Spare, it really felt like… Harry isn’t going to bother much with his family now that QEII has passed. Yes, he’s spoken about his terms for reconciliation, but Harry knows his father and brother. He knows them well. So saying goodbye to QEII was saying goodbye to a lot more.
So we just learned the (gross) news that Selena Gomez is dating one Chainsmoker, Drew Taggart. There’s been so much intrigue on Deux Moi about who Selena Gomez is dating and the fact that she hasn’t publicly dated anyone since that go-round with Justin Bieber and The Weeknd four or five years ago. The names of pretty much every “hot” guy in her age bracket have been thrown out there and some of them actually made sense, but this one doesn’t. Girl, what are you doing? I guess The Heart Wants What It Wants… Anyway, Page Six got some exclusive photos of Selena and Drew on a bowling date in NYC. Apparently they were making out, Selena is super into him, and they’re really cool because they go to normal, chill places and not members-only clubs. Okay then.
Selena Gomez and Drew Taggart seem to have confirmed their rumored romance.
Page Six has obtained exclusive photos of the singer-actress, 30, and the Chainsmokers member, 33, on a flirty date at The Gutter, a New York City bowling alley, on Sunday.
An eyewitness tells us the couple was “making out” like teenagers while enjoying some alone time.
“There was also a group of young girls that went up for pictures from her shortly after and a man getting an autograph,” our insider spills.
The pair kept things casual, with Gomez wearing a black sweatshirt and matching sweatpants. Her dark, shoulder-length locks were down while her signature bangs framed her face.
Taggart, for his part, opted for a long-sleeved camo shirt and dark pants. His most noticeable accessory, however, was the big smile he sported as he watched the “Only Murders in the Building” star bowl.
Gomez’s rep did not immediately respond to our inquiry, while Taggart’s had “no comment.”
According to Us Weekly, the pair are “very casual and low-key” at the moment but “having a lot of fun together.”
“They aren’t trying to hide their romance by sneaking around at members-only clubs,” a source told the outlet on Monday, noting that the musicians like to “go bowling and to the movies.”
The informant added that Gomez is “so affectionate” with the DJ and “can hardly keep her hands off him.”
Amid Taggart’s new romance, his most recent ex-girlfriend, Eve Jobs, seems to have deactivated her Instagram.
While attempting to search for Jobs’ account earlier on Tuesday, we encountered a message that read, “Sorry, this page isn’t available.”
The 24-year-old model — who is the daughter of late Apple founder Steve Jobs — and the “Closer” hitmaker began dating over the summer, but their romance must have fizzled out.
According to Us Weekly, their breakup was “totally amicable.”
Taggart was previously linked to models Haley Rowe, Meredith Mickelson, and Chantel Jeffries, while Gomez has been relatively quiet about her love life since her split from The Weeknd in October 2017.
I have so many thoughts and none of them are good. First, the members-only club comment is so specific that it seems like a dig at someone. The Chainsmokers are basically a flop DJ duo that has one hit song that is only good because Halsey is on it. They’re gross (the Closer performances and video are particularly uncomfortable) and I’m pretty sure one of her negative song lyrics/poetry verses is about one of them. I can barely tell the two Chainsmokers apart, they’re like a before and after, two sides of the same crusty coin. I can semi-see the appeal of Drew to a 20-something, but as a woman the same age as him, to me he looks like an actual chain-smoking f-ckboi and his dating history seems to indicate the same. Apparently Drew was just dating Steve Jobs’ youngest daughter, Eve, and they’re claiming the breakup was amicable, but her Instagram is gone. Did she just not want the heat or what? Drew reminds me of a less talented, less successful, less attractive (yeah, I said it) Justin Bieber. Even though that may not be the point, I think Selena can do better. When I wrote about Jesse Williams joining Only Murders, I had a moment where I was like “ugh what if he and Selena got together on set,” but actually even that would be better than this, though someone else entirely would be preferable. Where is her amazing PR team right now?!

The most difficult part to get through in Prince Harry’s Spare is the first fifty pages or so, when his mother’s death leaves him traumatized and no one in the royal family gives a sh-t. He was neglected, abandoned, ignored, isolated and terrified, all of it made worse by the fact that his “spare” status had been emphasized since birth. His mother was the only one who treated him equal to William – everyone in and around the royal family made it clear that he was never anything more than a backup to his brother. Harry writes about this movingly, the acceptance of it throughout his childhood, the thorough brainwashing that he simply would never be as important as William. So, of course, Diana’s former butler Paul Burrell has taken that and made it into a story about how Harry was bitter about sausages.
Princess Diana’s butler has told how Harry was made to feel less important than William as a child — by getting fewer sausages at breakfast. Paul Burrell, 64, recalled that a miffed Harry would say: “How come he gets three?” A nanny said: “William needs filling up more than you. He’s going to be king one day.”
Paul recalled the incident and said he could see how early rivalry between the brothers played out at times. Paul told The Sun: “When I look back now, I think maybe I was glimpsing the dynamic at play. One time I saw the nanny give William three sausages at breakfast and Harry had two. And Harry would look at his plate and say, how come he gets three? And I only get two.”
Paul recalled the nanny’s comment and added: “Harry would fall quiet and suck it up, but that’s what he had to contend with, even in his own home.”
Paul reckons Harry’s unwarranted attacks on the Royal Family stem from a youth of playing second fiddle to William — who as a boy was second in line to the throne and destined to be king. And while Paul says he witnessed a deep bond of brotherhood between the pair as kids, he now sees how Harry was harbouring a seething resentment towards his brother and the institution that put William ahead of him.
Paul continued: “In their mother’s eyes, they were absolutely equal. The princess doted on them both. But I can see that Harry found it tough living up to the standard set by William.”
Harry: Here’s my story, in my own words, about how I was neglected, traumatized and abandoned after my mother died when I was 12, and the neglect was made so much worse because I was only the spare. In adulthood, the heir even violently assaulted me when I wouldn’t capitulate to him and divorce my wife.
Paul Burrell: This is about sausages, this is why Harry resented William!
I am seriously begging these British people to get some f–king therapy.
Tyler James Williams, 30, is so good on Abbott Elementary, for which he earned his first Emmy nomination and got a Golden Globe last week. He’s been working since he was a child on Everybody Hates Chris and he’s also had roles on The Walking Dead, Criminal Minds and Dear White People. In an interview with Men’s Health, Tyler revealed that he almost died five years ago from complications from Chron’s disease. He’d always had trouble keeping weight on and after working hard to bulk up he ended up with severe stomach pain and vomiting. He was diagnosed with Chron’s through an X-ray that found his blockage. After surgery his intestines ruptured and he went into sepsis. It sounds absolutely harrowing and like it was touch and go for him.
In his early 20s, for instance, he hired trainers, lifted heavy, and force-fed himself. Once, he chugged a shake with 1,600 calories, only to throw it all back up. In late 2017, at age 24, the five-foot-nine actor crested 130 pounds while juggling a role on Criminal Minds with travel for the period crime drama Detroit. “I was really pushing my body to the limit,” he says. “By the time December hit, it just crashed. Everything shut down.”
Williams had searing stomach pain and couldn’t keep anything down—not even the doctor-ordered colonoscopy prep—so a gastroenterologist at NYU Langone diagnosed him using X-rays. The verdict: His bowels were so inflamed and clogged with scar tissue that he had less than a one-centimeter gap in his terminal ileum, part of the small intestine near the pelvis. It was a massive flare-up from Crohn’s disease—a disorder he didn’t even know he had.
At least a half million Americans suffer from Crohn’s, an inflammatory condition that can result in weight loss and malnutrition and can, if untreated, be life-threatening. There’s a genetic factor, but Williams, who has two younger brothers, was the only one in his family to show symptoms. Back then, at least.
He underwent emergency surgery to remove six inches of lower intestine. Then things got worse: His intestines were too beat-up to heal back together, and they perforated. He went septic as doctors raced him back into surgery. He ended up living on intravenous foods with an ostomy bag for several months. At one point, Williams weighed 105 pounds and was too weak to stand. But the moment that sticks with him the most was feeling his whole body “vibrating” after he’d gone septic. “The last thought I had was Holy shit, this could be it. If this is it, I’m not happy. I worked a lot. I did a lot of things. I didn’t enjoy any of this. This can’t be it.”
All this happened only five years ago, yet when Williams meets me at the Men’s Health offices in New York, he looks fresh, preternaturally calm, and stronger than ever: a chiseled 145 pounds, with biceps popping out of his T-shirt.
The good news is that the rest of the article details his recovery, his fitness regime and his life at home now with his two brothers. There’s also a brief video interview where he demonstrates his at-home workout, which he started doing during the pandemic. Tyler explained that he eats six small meals a day, a couple of those are shakes and his largest meal is dinner, after which he usually gets sleepy and passes out. It was so cute when he talked about that! He’s only 30 so I was trying not to thirst after him, but it’s really hard not to do that. I found myself mesmerized by his arms. I’m so glad that he recovered and is doing well now and that Abbott Elementary is getting so many awards! When you look at the talent involved it’s no wonder.
No matter how hard she tries – lol – the Princess of Wales will always be such a lightweight when it comes to activism and advocacy. The entire reason she styles herself as a “credible Early Years expert” is because she wants to do “events” with kids. That’s it. She just wants to pose for photos with kids and hold babies. So, a new year and the old Kate. She was out today at Foxcubs Nursery in Luton. The excuse for this visit was “raising awareness of the importance of early childhood for positive lifelong outcomes.” They just send her to wander around nursery schools and pose with kids. If I was one of those parents, I would be livid that my children were being used as props in this way.
Fashion notes: Kate’s pumpkin dress is Gabriela Hearst, and she paired it with her Massimo Dutti coat in camel, a Ralph Lauren belt, Stuart Weitzman clutch and a pair of Kiki McDonough citrine drop earrings. The ensemble seems very Meghan, although I don’t recall, off-hand, Meghan wearing any shade of pumpkin. I’m generally against anyone wearing orange (in any shade), but this definitely feels like it would have been better in October or November, not January. But whatever, I’m just feeling spring-y right now because Virginia is enjoying a week of spring-like weather.
This visit was also Kate’s first solo event of the year and first solo event since Prince Harry’s Spare was released. Traditionally, Kate only does a handful of events between January and March, then it’s time for a month-long holiday with her kids, etc. I wonder if she’s going to do a big promotional blitz for her new Early Years pie charts? It sounds like it.
I finished Prince Harry’s Spare last Friday and I’ve been stewing on it ever since, going back to different chapters, thinking about how carefully Harry chose his words in certain situations, and what he chose not to say. While Spare is an incredible historical document, I do feel like it’s incomplete. As Harry told Bryony Gordon, he cut about 400 pages from the first drafts, enough for a whole other memoir. There’s also a sense that he didn’t want to “get into the weeds” of who said what to whom, especially when it came to staff issues within Kensington Palace. I’m left feeling like… wow, I hope Meghan writes her memoir, because she’s going to provide us with more of those kinds of details. In any case, Harry does describe in general terms how everything fell apart within the Kensington Palace office during and after the Sussexes’ wedding.
Our staff sensed the friction, read the press, and thus there was frequent bickering around the office. Sides were taken. Team Cambridge versus Team Sussex. Rivalry, jealousy, competing agendas—it all poisoned the atmosphere.
It didn’t help that everyone was working around the clock. There were so many demands from the press, such a constant stream of errors that needed clearing up, and we didn’t have nearly enough people or resources. At best we were able to address 10 percent of what was out there. Nerves were shattering, people were sniping. In such a climate there was no such thing as constructive criticism. All feedback was seen as an affront, an insult. More than once a staff member slumped across their desk and wept.
For all this, every bit of it, Willy blamed one person. Meg. He told me so several times, and he got cross when I told him he was out of line. He was just repeating the press narrative, spouting fake stories he’d read or been told. The great irony, I told him, was that the real villains were the people he’d imported into the office, people from government, who didn’t seem impervious to this kind of strife—but addicted to it. They had a knack for backstabbing, a talent for intrigue, and they were constantly setting our two groups of staff against each other.
[From Spare by Prince Harry]
After this, Harry explains how Meghan “remained calm” and made efforts to spread kindness, from handwritten thank-you notes to baskets of food and flowers. She hosted tea parties and ice-cream socials for staff and “shared all the freebies she received, clothes and perfumes and makeup, with all the women in the office.” Meghan also bought “new lamps and space heaters, all bought with her personal credit card” for office staff. Not only was Meghan buying furniture for that dilapidated shack, Nottingham Cottage, she was also buying sh-t for the people working in KP’s offices? Jesus.
As for Harry’s explanation that William had brought in Tory political operatives who thrived on conflict, that’s definitely interesting. But I also think Harry has it the wrong way around when he writes “Willy blamed one person. Meg. He told me so several times, and he got cross when I told him he was out of line. He was just repeating the press narrative, spouting fake stories he’d read or been told.” William wasn’t just “repeating” what he’d been told or what he read – William, Kate and their staff were the sources. Once again, I was saying this before Harry and Meghan even got married – there was always a clear and obvious need for the brothers to have separate offices. It was shocking incompetence from Clarence House and Buckingham Palace to not realize that months or even years before the Sussex wedding.
