The Guardian was the first to publish selected excerpts from Prince Harry’s Spare. The biggest news, as we already discussed, was Prince William’s violent assault on his younger brother in 2019. Just in that brief passage, we learned so much about the brothers’ toxic relationship and the cycles of abuse Harry was subjected to both personally and institutionally. I didn’t include the last part of the Guardian’s piece because I thought it deserved a stand-alone post. From the Guardian:

Harry’s resentment of being the “spare” is the unifying theme of his book, through chapters on his childhood, his schooling, his career as a royal and in the British army, his relationship with his parents and brother and his life with Meghan through courtship, wedding and marriage to their own experience of parenthood.

Early on, Harry recounts the story of how his father, now King Charles, supposedly said to his wife, Princess Diana, on the day of Harry’s birth: “Wonderful! Now you’ve given me an heir and a spare – my work is done.”

Whether describing his memories and love for Diana, who was killed in a car crash in Paris in August 1997, or his similar love for his grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II, who died last year, Harry is unsparing in his recounting of intensely private scenes and conversations.

…One of Harry’s most pertinent revelations of private conversations between the senior royals comes from the very front of his book. Harry recounts an anguished meeting with Charles and William after the Windsor Castle funeral of Prince Phillip, the queen’s husband, in April 2021.

Charles, he says, stood between his warring sons, “looking up at our flushed faces”.

“Please, boys,” Harry quotes his father as saying. “Don’t make my final years a misery.”

[From The Guardian]

“Charles, he says, stood between his warring sons, ‘looking up at our flushed faces.’” This was just after Prince Philip’s funeral at Windsor Castle in 2021. Harry flew into the UK alone (Meghan was heavily pregnant with Lili) and a huge chunk of the funeral reporting was about Harry and William walking together after the funeral, and how Kate facilitated that walk and conversation because she’s the keenest linchpin peacemaker of all time. Weirdly, there were rumors – not widespread rumors, but some reporting by the British tabloids and royal biographers – that Harry and William got into a physical altercation following the funeral. Given Harry’s story about William getting him alone in 2019 and assaulting him in Nottingham Cottage, I now wonder if something similar happened once the family was away from the camera positions. I wonder if William jumped his brother or physically attacked him just after the service for their grandfather. That would go a long way towards explaining their “flushed faces” and Charles’s weaksauce intervention. It would also explain why Harry did not bother to fly in for Philip’s memorial service in 2022 – he wanted to avoid being assaulted by his brother again.

From Celebitchy: We bought this bed for my son and he really likes it. It was easy to put together and it looks high end but was under $200 for a complete upholstered frame and headboard. It comes in three neutral colors and in twin to full sizes. I also got these fun socks for my son for Christmas and they were a hit. Here are some more things Hecate and I are looking at on Amazon!

A complete skincare set for a glowing complexion

From CB: If you’re looking to start a new skincare routine this set by trusted brand Tree of Life is just $53 for a cleanser, toner, Vitamin C serum, moisturizer and eye gel. This has over 1,200 ratings, 4.3 stars and a B on Fakespot. People say that it reduces both acne and fine lines and that they get compliments on their skin. “Recently I decided to change all my facial products and went for this combo pack and I am totally satisfied. It makes my skin so soft and bright. The dullness is gone.” “I’ve used high end and low end products… this stuff may be my favorite.. I feel like it evened out my skin within a few days.”

An extension cord with an outlet concealer for less clutter

From CB: This extension cord and outlet concealer combination can help tame some of the clutter in your house and give common areas a high end look. It comes in 3 foot, 8 foot and surge protector versions. These have over 47,000 ratings, 4.7 stars and the same score on ReviewMeta. People say they work as intended and that they look so nice in their home. “I have a few varieties of these sleek sockets and they really help make a neat look for people that like their wires out of sight. They’re also good for outlets behind furniture if you want the object flush with the wall. Plus they cover the wall outlet which prevents my toddler from trying to mess with it. ” “This was great for hiding all those ugly plugs and wires so happy I found this!”

Fabric softener sheets that help remove and repel pet hair

From CB: These Bounce fabric softener sheets are billed as helping remove and repel lint and pet hair. They have over 56,000 ratings, 4.6 stars and a B on Fakespot. Reviewers say they really work and that cat and dog hair no longer sticks to their clothing and towels. “I was constantly covered in fur, so much so that I can’t go near my grandson, who is allergic to cats. Laundry was a horror show. These dryer sheets made all the difference. You need but one and 99.9 percent of the hair I used to find on everything after drying was absolutely gone.” “My wife said to me a couple days ago how surprised she was about these. I said me too! We don’t know how they work, but they do. Look they aren’t perfect, but really help keep the dog hair off the clothes. We have 2 White huskies so you can imagine.”

A cup holder extender for a more organized car

From CB: I really like my new car but the cup holders are smaller than in my last car and my drink cups don’t always fit. This cup holder extender by Swigzy is offset to keep large cups and snacks out of your way while driving. It’s designed so you can fit two if needed and it can adjust to fit different size holders. This has over 7,600 ratings, 4.6 stars and a B on Fakespot. Reviewers say it’s so easy to use and that it works perfectly, unlike other cup holder expanders they’ve tried. “Went through about a dozen different design oversized cup holder adapters for my SUV and pickup in the last two years and all had problems ranging from just plain cheap/flimsy materials to unstable to not fitting as described. Bought two of these Swigzys… They work great.” “I love reusable water bottles and spent a lot of time looking for the right cup holder adapter to fit all of them. I needed something sturdy, that would adjust to any cup holder and any water bottle size. This product was exactly what I was looking for! I’ve had it for over a year now and it has held up so well.” You’ll want to measure your cup holder depth to see which model is right for you.

A shampoo brush to add relaxation to your routine

From Hecate: I got a shampoo brush in my stocking this Christmas. I never saw the value in them before I used one. But now that I’ve used it, oh my stars and garters, I’m never going back. It’s like recreating a shampooing at a salon. Not only does it feel great, it works the shampoo into such a beautiful lather. I’m sure everyone knows this and I’m just late to the party. This Heeta brush is an Amazon Best Seller with over 130,000 reviews. And it comes in nine different colors. They are only $10 a brush so everyone in your family can have their own. They have 4.6 stars which ReviewMeta confirmed. Customers found the brush had multiple benefits, “I thought it might be rough on the scalp but it really isn’t. I noticed results right away, my hair was way less tangled after showering.” And it does wonders for itchy scalps, “I can tell it’s really giving my scalp a good amount of exfoliation – much better than just using my fingernails.”

A wide-leg lounge set for stylish comfort

From Hecate: I actually bought this for myself to open when the rest of the family opens their new Christmas Eve pajamas. I love them. Not only are they really comfortable, they’re super cute. I usually overheat in long pant sets but these are fine the whole night, which is weird because they have both polyester and spandex in them. The sets come in eight different colors, in sizes S-XL and are priced $32-$34 depending on color. I got the set in white and I like it so much, I might get another set, probably the black. It’s great for traveling because you can wear it around and it looks like you’re wearing clothes. The only downside is they’re new so they don’t have many reviews yet, only 44 people have rated it. However, they gave it 4.2 stars and Fakespot gave them an A. And so do I. This person confirmed they don’t feel like pjs, “It’s the kind of lounge wear you can actually wear out without feeling like you’re wearing pjs.” And it fits well too, “The pants were not to long which almost never happens. Very comfy and super cute. High quality.”

A deep tissue trigger point massager for fast relief

From Hecate: I’m taking Amazon’s word on this one. It looks weird as hell but it also looks like it might work. I carry a lot of tension in my shoulders. It’s part of my issue with my migraines. This odd-looking, warped thumbs up thing looks like it would really work on knots, though. The description says it’s hard plastic and it’s molded for a hand for optimal grip. And yes, it does look like an odd sex toy, but that doesn’t mean it can’t do it’s intended job – it can’t help how it looks. It comes in two colors – the green one is $8 and the blue one is $7. This Amazon Choice has over 4,500 reviews 4.4 stars and the same score on ReviewMeta. This person assured me that it will in fact, take care of my knots, “I have terrible muscle knots in my shoulders and neck. Not much has really helped and I have tried most therapies, This is a GODSEND!!” And, it doesn’t take long at all, “Just received this tool 5 minutes ago and I am feeling much better at a fraction of the price of a professional massage.”

One of the most obvious and desperate tactics from the British media is to find and pay random people to bash the Duke and Duchess of Sussex. It happened with Thomas Markle and the whole White Markle clan. It happened when Prince Harry was invited to speak at the United Nations for Nelson Mandela Day too – even though Harry was invited by the Mandela Foundation, the British media paid a Mandela relative to bash Harry.

Currently, the Sussexes have executive produced Live to Lead, which was “inspired by” Nelson Mandela, and produced in conjunction with the Mandela Foundation. Which means that this week, Camilla Tominey at the Telegraph published a story full of “quotes” from Nelson Mandela’s granddaughter Ndileka Mandela, quotes like “Harry needs to be authentic and stick to his own story, what relevance does grandad’s life have with his? I don’t believe he nor Meghan have ever properly met granddad… but they are using his quotations in the documentary to draw in people and make millions without the Mandela family benefiting.” Ndileka Mandela is also quoted by Tominey as saying Harry and Meghan are “tedious” for using Mandela’s name and quotes. Except… the real Ndileka Mandela has spoken out and said that she never said any of that.

Nelson Mandela’s granddaughter Ndileka Mandela isn’t sure why people are “making a mountain out of a mole hill” over Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s use of the late social justice activist’s quotes. Prince Harry and Markle released their second project with Netflix Dec. 31. “Live to Lead” profiles several social justice leaders, including U.S. Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, climate activist Greta Thunberg, Gloria Steinem and lawyer Bryan Stevenson.

However, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex credited Nelson Mandela as the inspiration for the docuseries.

Fox News Digital can confirm that Ndileka hasn’t criticized Markle or Harry for the use of her grandfather in the opening to the show.

“I’ve watched the first two episodes of this ‘Live to Lead,’” Ndileka told Fox News Digital. “I honestly don’t find anything wrong with them using that opening thing inspirational with a quote of granddad. I just think that people are making a … mountain out of a mole hill, and they’re wanting to persecute Meghan and Harry for no reason, honestly,” she added. “I mean, Meghan has always been an activist, and this is in her activism work which my grandfather was, he was, a social justice activist through and through.”

Ndileka emphasized that Nelson Mandela launched his political career through “social activism” and compared the journey to Prince Harry and Markle’s.

“And his enter point into politics was through social activism, which is exactly what Meghan and Harry are doing. Like I said early on, a lot of people use granddad’s quotes, and nobody has been made such a big rah-rah as they are making out of Harry and Meghan using this quotation.”

[From Fox News]

So after a day full of headlines about “the Mandela family slams the Sussexes,” it turns out that Nelson Mandela’s granddaughter never said any of what Tominey reported. It turns out Ndileka Mandela is totally fine with the Sussexes being inspired by her grandfather and producing Live to Lead in concert with the Mandela Foundation. Weird. I wonder if this denial will get picked up with the same ferocity as the false quotes?

When the M3GAN trailer came out last year, it went viral and every piece of it became instantly iconic. The dancing, the fact that a robot doll runs on all four, the idea that a sentient robot-child will literally kill to protect her BFF. It was all pretty great, especially because this was a pretty cheap movie – the budget was $12 million, and while there are special effects, most of it is done through old-fashioned movie trickery. M3GAN comes out on Friday and box office prognosticators are already saying that the film will make back its budget on opening weekend. The reviews are coming in too, and as of Wednesday, M3GAN has a 98% critics’ rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Even movie-snob critics are applauding it – apparently, it’s more of a black comedy than a pure horror, but it walks both lines very well.

A terrifying animatronic doll named M3GAN, short for Model 3 Generative Android, is poised to take the box office by storm. Universal and Blumhouse’s PG-13 “M3GAN” is aiming to generate $17 million to $20 million from 3,400 North American theaters in its opening weekend. Those ticket sales would mark a scary-good start because the modestly budgeted horror film cost just $12 million to produce.

“M3GAN” is hoping to function as counter-programming in January, which tends to be a dead month at the movies. But the pint-sized agent of terror will be no match for James Cameron’s reigning champion “Avatar: The Way of Water,” which is expected to dominate domestic box office charts for the fourth consecutive week. Disney and 20th Century’s blockbuster sequel is projected to decline roughly 50% over the weekend, putting its estimated three-day tally at $30 million to $35 million.

Fear not, horror fans. Pandora won’t entirely suck up the oxygen in theaters. Already, the Gerard Johnstone-directed “M3GAN” looks like it’ll benefit greatly from word of mouth. In the lead-up to its release, the robotic doll has become a viral sensation and meme queen, thanks to her killer choreography and overall chaotic energy. Universal and Blumhouse have capitalized on the fervor with clever marketing tactics, including troupes of dancing dolls at the film’s premiere.

[From Variety]

Seriously though, M3GAN looks like so much fun, I might actually go see it in the theaters, and I’m literally waiting to watch all of the Oscar-bait stuff at home. Anyway, I hope this murderous doll wrecks James Cameron’s dumb movie. This one’s for the killer robot-girls!

CBS and ITV probably didn’t predict that Prince Harry’s Spare would begin leaking early, and both channels thought they would at least have a day or two of focus on their respective interviews with Harry. Whoopsie! But I’m still going to watch and cover the interviews, which I suspect will be very different in tone. Tom Bradby is the interviewer for ITV’s 90-minute interview with Harry, which will air on Sunday. ITV has released another teaser/clip:

Bradby is aiming for “fair broker” even though Prince William reportedly cut him off and made Bradby persona non grata in royal circles. Bradby asks Harry if he’s now invading his family’s privacy, to which Harry responds: “That would be the accusation from the people that don’t understand – or don’t want to believe – that my family have been briefing the press… I don’t know how staying silent is ever going to make things better.” You tell ‘em, King Harry. He said: they opened up their pieholes about me for years, so turnabout is fair play.

Hilariously, Bradby also asked Harry if he will go to his father’s coronation if he’s invited, and Harry tells Bradby: “There is a lot that can happen between now and then. But, you know, the door is always open. The ball is in their court. There is a lot to be discussed and I really hope that they are willing to sit down and talk about it.” LMAO. He even chuckles a bit as he says it too. And finally, Bradby asks if Harry still believes in the monarchy, and Harry says “yes,” then he’s asked if he will play a part in the monarchy’s future, and Harry says “I don’t know.”

As we discussed previously, Babylon is a big box office bomb. Maybe not the biggest of the year, but definitely a significant flop for Paramount, for Damien Chazelle, for Margot Robbie and, yes, for Brad Pitt. While Pitt barely lifted a finger to promote Babylon, he still got top billing and I’m sure Pitt’s name was a big reason why Paramount agreed to the $109 million budget, not to mention whatever Pitt’s paycheck was. All of that means that Pitt suddenly needed to update everyone on his romantic life, because nothing can ever be Pitt’s fault. His people leaked an exclusive to People Magazine that Pitt spent New Year’s in Cabo with Ines de Ramon. When that story was met with a collective shrug, magically Page Six got exclusive photos of Pitt and Ines:

I looked through the photos at Page Six – it looks like an old man with too much plastic surgery has somehow forced his pretty young assistant to go on vacation with him so she can “take dictation.” As I’ve said before, I hope Ines is collecting those checks. Part of her job here is to help build up Pitt’s reputation as a guy who is simply too cool and avant-garde to ever settle down with some beautiful young woman. Which means we’re getting these kinds of stories too:

Getting serious? Brad Pitt and Ines de Ramon can’t get enough of each other, an insider exclusively reveals in the new issue of Us Weekly.

“They’ve been hanging out a ton, taking in art shows in L.A. and jamming to music and watching movies over at his place,” the source says of the Oscar winner, 59, and the jewelry executive, 30. “He’s been cooking for her, they work out and go on hikes, go over projects they both have and bounce ideas off each other too.”

“Brad has gone from seeing this as a fling to wanting to spend all his time with her,” the insider tells Us. “The other girls he was flirting with or considering as dates have all gradually disappeared. It seems just a matter of time before they’re officially exclusive.”

While the Ad Astra actor has been spending a lot of time with de Ramon, the first insider adds that some of his pals “aren’t so sure” that the romance will work out “for the long term.” If it does, though, Pitt’s friends think the University of Geneva graduate could be perfect for him.

“Nobody’s disputing Ines is a cool, smart and very likable character,” the source explains. “She’s a great match for Brad if he’s serious about making it last.”

[From Us Weekly]

Shades of Neri Oxman, right? Suddenly he’s found this super-cool, perfect, much younger woman and the PR goes into overdrive. I’d also like to point out that Pitt seems especially “stuck” in a dated, younger-guy narrative about love and relationships too. Reading all of these Team Pitt-sourced pieces, I can’t believe we’re actually talking about a 59-year-old man. Brad’s like Jennifer Aniston in that way – they’re both sort of frozen in 30-something 1990s amber. Maybe Brad will make Ines a mixtape before they go on their date at the coffeehouse, where he’ll tell her he’s ready to be officially exclusive.

Dude, Netflix needs to toss a lot more than a coin to The Witcher with the way things are going. The franchise is taking more hits than Geralt in the heat of battle. Aaand that’s about all the references I can make. But the show’s hurting. First Henry Cavill dipped and Liam Hemsworth was not well received. And Henry’s complaints about how the show was treating source material were shared with many of the show’s fans. Those same complaints may explain why the prequel, The Witcher: Blood Origin, has gone over like a lead balloon. Or maybe it’s just a truly crap show, because it’s hated by both critics and fans alike. The show has a measly 35% approval rating with critics and an almost non-existent 12% with audiences. And it’s got Michelle Yeoh in it!

The Witcher: Blood Origin is a limited series set within the same universe as Netflix’s main Witcher show, and both are based on the original series of novels by Andrzej Sapkowski. However, Blood Origin is set a thousand years before the events of the original television series, and “depicts the creation of the first Witcher, as well as the events leading to the Conjunction of the Spheres.” It also stars Michelle Yeoh, who definitely deserves better than this poorly reviewed, low-rated fantasy prequel.

Over on movie review aggregation website Rotten Tomatoes, Blood Origin sports a 36 percent approval rating among critics and an even worse eight percent approval rating from fans (h/t Forbes). While the critic score is bad and places it among some of the worst-rated original shows on Netflix, it’s the historically low eight percent audience rating that’s really wild.

Of course, it should be noted that some fans are review-bombing the series for a few different reasons. Some are angry Henry Cavill supporters still fuming about his late October exit from the main show. Others are Witcher fans who continue to be frustrated with Netflix’s handling of the original source material in its Witcher projects

Yet, it’s hard to ignore that very low eight percent viewer rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Even Netflix’s supposedly despised Resident Evil show has a 26 percent approval rating from fans. (Halo sits at a comparatively excellent 52 percent.) Blood Origin’s rating, at least from what I can tell, seems to be the lowest viewer score from any Netflix original show. It’s even lower than some other infamously review-bombed films and shows, like Disney and Marvel’s She-Hulk (33 percent) or Star Wars: The Last Jedi (42 percent).

With all that in mind, my read is that this isn’t just another case of a property getting review-bombed by chuds, but instead just a really bad show that even diehard Witcher fans don’t enjoy. Reading fan reviews, many complain about the shoddy CGI, boring pace, bland writing, and a general lack of direction. This echoes similar complaints from critics, too. For Netflix, this can’t be a good thing, and doesn’t bode well for the future of its monster-slaying franchise in a post-Henry Cavill Witcher-verse.

[From Kotaku]

Not that anyone asked me, but I think it’s a little from Column A and a little form Column B. I haven’t read the source material so I can’t comment on how far these bozos are straying from it. But we’ve seen with Game of Thrones that fans will allow a lot if they like where the filmmakers are going. Or if the actors are hot enough – I don’t know, I never liked Game of Thrones, so I don’t know why people stuck with that. But I understand the dismal ratings if Netflix is completely messing up the source material. They’ve destroyed enough good material *coughTheSandmancough*. Review bombing is so prevalent, though and is probably a factor. Liam H needs to prepare himself now, he’ll be creamed by a large group of people who will bash his performance without watching it. While I understand the disappointment of losing an actor you love in a role, it’s not fair to trash a replacement, they’re just doing their job. If he deserves it, fine. But let him earn it. And, like the article points out, even with the review bombing, the other shows that have been hit have not sunk as low as Blood Origin.

Which takes us to Column B, the show must suffer. Lack of direction is one thing but bad CGI and boring pacing in a fantasy genre show? That’s criminal. You’ve lost the plot if you can’t get those right. But how did they attract Michelle Yeoh and Minnie Driver with a crap script? I swear, Netflix sells stuff on spec, throws money at actors and just then forgets about it when it comes to actual production. Meanwhile, Apple TV is turning out better and better content. Netflix better wake up and remember that Amazon and Apple have revenue sources that can sustain their endeavors. And for gawd’s sake, do better for Michelle Yeoh.

One of the defining moments of Prince Harry’s life was “the Nazi costume” incident in 2005. Harry and his brother attended a party, the theme of which was apparently “Natives and Colonials.” Soon after the party, photos of Harry were leaked to the media, photos of Harry wearing a swastika and swigging a drink. At the time, Harry was thrown under the bus thoroughly and then-Prince Charles made a big show of encouraging Harry to make amends and visit people within Britain’s Jewish community. Harry recently addressed the issue in Netflix’s Harry & Meghan, where he called the costume “one of the biggest mistakes of my life.” As it turns out, Harry also addressed the incident in his memoir, Spare. The New York Post had the excerpt, wherein Harry writes that Prince William and Kate encouraged him to wear the Nazi uniform and they thought the whole thing was hilarious.

Prince Harry sensationally puts some of the blame for his Nazi uniform scandal on his brother, Prince William, and his sister-in-law, Kate Middleton, in his new memoir, sources tell Page Six. The Duke of Sussex will claim the Prince and Princess of Wales “howled with laughter” when they saw him dressed up for the 2005 party.

Harry was 20 years old when The Sun newspaper published a front-page photo of him dressed as a Nazi soldier with a red armband emblazoned with a big swastika. The picture was taken at a costume party with a “Native and Colonial” theme, where William was also a guest and was dressed in a homemade lion outfit.

In one segment of the book, obtained by Page Six, Harry writes about choosing the outfit, revealing that it was a toss-up between two costumes: a pilot uniform or a Nazi uniform.

“I phoned Willy and Kate, asked what they thought. Nazi uniform, they said,” Harry writes, adding that when he went home and tried it on for them. “They both howled. Worse than Willy’s leotard outfit! Way more ridiculous! Which, again, was the point.”

Harry, now 38, is expected to go into detail for the first time about his fallout with his older brother following the ensuing storm. Other book sources confirm that there is also a “good chunk” about both Kate and his stepmother, Queen Consort Camilla Parker-Bowles.

Although the Duke of Sussex has called the Nazi incident “one of the biggest mistakes in my life,” one senior publishing source who has read Harry’s “Spare” told us, “It’s strange as you would think that Harry would take ownership of this and just move on and not drag his brother into it, but he makes it clear that he feels strongly about William’s role in the scandal.”

Royal Historian Robert Lacey had previously written that the first sign of trouble between the brothers came when Harry was forced to bear the brunt of public outrage over his Nazi costume — even though William helped choose the outfit. “Harry chose his costume in conjunction with his elder brother — the future King William V, then 22, who had laughed all the way back to Highgrove (Charles’ country home) with the younger sibling he was supposed to be mentoring — and then onwards to the party together,” Lacey wrote in his 2020 book “Battle of Brothers.”

[From Page Six]

Yeah, I don’t believe that Harry is trying to shift the blame onto William. Harry has made it repeatedly clear that he made a mistake and he’s tried to learn from the experience and do better. What Harry is saying is: William and Kate didn’t see an issue with it at the time either, and they never got any heat for it. We’ve heard before (especially from Robert Lacey) that the Nazi uniform moment changed William and Harry’s relationship, but I don’t think we’ve ever heard that Kate was right there, “howling with laughter” at the uniform. Golly!
