The Golden Globes are scheduled for January 10th, next Tuesday. My prediction is that we’re going to be ass-deep in royal stories, given that Prince Harry’s Spare drops on that same day. I’ve really enjoyed the past two years, where the Golden Globes were either boycotted or they were simply a brief online event. I wish we had kept that particular energy from the pandemic. But no, the Globes are back and now they’re being held on a Tuesday. Given the problematic nature of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, will anyone show up? Brendan Fraser has already so no, he’s not going (he was sexually harassed and assaulted by a former HFPA president). Tom Cruise will probably also be a no-show, given he was one of the first to call for a boycott. But a surprising number of celebrities and nominees will attend, at least according to Variety:
The Golden Globes are on their way to a celebrity-filled comeback, as the list of nominees set to attend the Jan. 10 ceremony is growing by the day. After facing a nearly two-year boycott following critiques about the Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s lack of diversity among its membership and complaints of unethical business practices, the Globes seeks to reestablish itself as one of Hollywood’s premiere awards ceremonies.
As of Thursday morning, I can exclusively reveal that film nominees for the 80th Globes expected to attend include Austin Butler (“Elvis”); “The Fabelmans” team of Steven Spielberg, Michelle Williams and Tony Kushner; Ana de Armas (“Blonde”), Jamie Lee Curtis (“Everything Everywhere All at Once”), and most likely, Daniel Craig (“Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery”).
There’s still no word if “Babylon” stars Brad Pitt and Margot Robbie and Julia Roberts (“Gaslit”) have plans to be at the ceremony. Sources say Brendan Gleeson (“The Banshees of Inisherin”) is still waiting to hear if he can get time away from filming the “Joker” sequel, “Joker: Folie à Deux,” to attend. Other directors hitting the red carpet will be Rian Johnson (“Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery”), James Cameron (“Avatar: The Way of Water”), Guillermo del Toro (“Pinocchio”) and Lukas Dhont (“Close”).
Baz Luhrmann is likely to attend following a Jan. 8 appearance with Butler at an “Elvis” party hosted by Warners and New Line film bosses Pam Abdy and Michael De Luca at The Formosa.
On the TV front, confirmed attendees include Kevin Costner (“Yellowstone”), Sheryl Lee Ralph (“Abbott Elementary”), double nominee Julia Garner (“Ozark” and “Inventing Anna”), Niecy Nash (“Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story”), Elizabeth Debecki (“The Crown’), “Hacks” co-stars Jean Smart and Hannah Einbinder, Jenna Ortega (“Wednesday”), Kaley Cuoco (“The Flight Attendant”), Jessica Chastain (“George & Tammy”) and Jeremy Allen White (“The Bear”). Andrew Garfield (“Under the Banner of Heaven”) is likely also coming.
“Only Murders in the Building” trio Selena Gomez, Steve Martin and Martin Short are maybes, as they’ve recently began shooting Season 3 of the Hulu comedy in New York City. The same goes for Quinta Brunson, who is currently shooting “Abbott Elementary.”
I would guess that some of those “maybes” will turn into a “yes” if the HFPA makes some undercover gestures to assure certain nominees that they’ve won. Like, if Quinta Brunson gets the nod that she’s a shoo-in, I bet she’ll come out. Same for the Only Murders people. Anyway, I’m disappointed that so many people are not committed long-term to boycotting the HFPA and the Golden Globes. What a bummer. Also: why does this stupid event have to be an evening “dinner”? Turn the Globes into a daytime luncheon.
PS… I feel for Austin Butler, who really did an amazing job trying to give a grounded performance as Elvis, only to be kneecapped by Baz Luhrmann’s cracked-out direction. And the fact that Ana de Armas was nominated for Blonde should tell you everything you need to know about how unserious the Globes are.

Last year our most commented story was about the Sussexes’ Oprah interview, which came out on March 21, 2021, right around the time we were finally getting vaccinated. In the post with our most commented, we added our favorite stories of the year, which were about the vaccines coming out, celebrities admitting that they don’t bathe and the hype over the Keenwell Institute. This year we had the Invictus Games, the Jubbly, the Queen’s funeral and of course Harry and Meghan’s Netflix series! Our most commented stories were about the royals, with one major exception, which you’ll see below.
20, 18, 13, 10, 2 The Waleses (nee Cambridges) kept up appearances
The Cambridges did a curious amount of moving house this year, prompting rumors that they were separated. Their separate arrival at events lent credence to that, although the British press didn’t say much about it. They continued to do their meager jobs by showing up to events in dated looks and stolen jewels, although they tried to look more modern when hobnobbing with celebrities. The Cambridges underlined how much they embraced antiquated tradition when Kate released her eerie 40th birthday portraits early this year.
19, 17, 16, 14, 11, 5 Charles snubbed the Sussexes and, to a lesser extent, the Wessexes
Charles became king when his mother died and promptly ignored her wishes to promote the Wessexes but promoted the Cambridges to the Waleses almost immediately. He followed his mother’s instructions to make Camilla Queen consort though. The line of succession was updated after the Queen passed and Prince Harry and Meghan’s children were listed without titles. What’s more is that Charles made sure Meghan wasn’t invited to Balmoral when everyone was saying goodbye to the Queen. He also uninvited the Sussexes from a reception at Buckingham Palace for visiting dignitaries paying their respects.
15, 12, 9, 8, 6 Queen Elizabeth celebrated her platinum jubilee in June and then passed away in September
This June, Queen Elizabeth celebrated 70 years on the throne with her Platinum Jubilee. Our most commented stories about the Jubilee were whether the Sussexes would bring their children (they did but we didn’t get to see them) and how great they looked, although they kept a low profile. The Queen passed away at the age of 96 on September 8th. Her very long state funeral was on the 19th. Before that the Sussexes and the then-Cambridges greeted the crowd together outside Windsor Castle. They barely interacted with each other and looked quite uncomfortable.
7 Meghan went to Uvalde after the shooting, brought food for volunteers
Embed from Getty Images
Duchess Meghan visited Uvalde, Texas in late May after 19 children and two teachers were murdered at an elementary school following a failure by police to intervene. She laid flowers at the memorial and brought food for volunteers there, a thoughtful gesture that was much appreciated. Harry and Meghan continue to focus on charities and causes important to them, and encourage others to make a difference too.
4 Harry and Meghan came out on Netflix
We got an early Christmas present with the Harry and Meghan series on Netflix, which I thought was exceptional. It laid out the Sussexes’ situation so well without dishing much dirt. As Kaiser and I have discussed on the podcast, Meghan and Harry are classier than we would ever be. (You can see the top 8 stories about part one and part two of their series by signing up for our mailing list. If you’re already signed up it knows and will still send you the email with the stories.) The most commented story from their series was when Meghan described meeting Will and Kate and not realizing that she wasn’t supposed to hug them. A source close to Kate countered that Kate is a big hugger, which doesn’t seem likely given everything we’ve seen from her to date.
3 Jeremy Clarkson published a violent screed against Meghan
Right after attending a palace reception held by his smoking buddy Camilla and attended by fellow Meghan-hater Piers Morgan, Jeremy Clarkson published a screed in the Sun saying he hated Meghan and wanted to see her stripped naked and hit with excrement in the streets. The article was removed days later and Clarkson issued a non-apology saying we didn’t get his Game of Thrones reference. The Sun apologized and cited their charity work. Meghan and Harry issued a statement about it, mentioning the Sun’s history of violent rhetoric. The palace’s silence spoke volumes. We closed the comments on this post or it may have been the most commented.
1 Will Smith slapped Chris Rock at the Oscars
Embed from Getty Images
It was the slap heard round the world and met with performative outrage from white people. Will Smith went up on stage at the Oscars and smacked Chris Rock for making a rude joke about Will’s wife, Jada, being bald. Will was not arrested that night and many of Hollywood’s elite rallied around him, however his career definitely took a hit and some of his projects were canceled. Will was kicked out of the Academy for ten years and many of us marveled at how quickly the Academy acted considering that it didn’t expel Roman Polanski until 2018. It came out that Will had asked Chris Rock years earlier to keep Jada’s name out of his mouth.
Our favorites: Charles got covid, Camilla went to a cooking event maskless the next day, predictably had covid
I’ll never forget the fact that, the day after it was publicly announced that Charles had covid (after attending an event maskless the night before), Camilla went to a cooking event and refused to wear a mask! She was breathing on people and food and then announced a few later that she had covid. These people have shown us, over and over again, who they are.
Our favorites: Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez got married
19 years after their first failed wedding attempt, Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez got married in Las Vegas! They were of course photographed on their honeymoons in Paris and Milan, just like during their paparazzi-friendly courtship. Bennifer forever!
Our favorites: Leonardo DiCaprio dumped his girlfriend when she turned 25
Leonardo DiCaprio, 48, predictably dumped his girlfriend, Camilla Marrone, when she turned 25. He seemed to be embarrassed by the fallout and announced that he was dating comparatively ancient Gigi Hadid, a 27-year-old single mother of one. That relationship did not last long and he was soon back to dating models under 25.
Our favorites: The optics of the Keen Caribbean tour
Incredibly, the then-Cambridges’s tour of the Caribbean was just this year. The optics were so bad and included the Cambridges greeting children through a fence and a recreation of a colonialist photo from 1953 of the Queen and Prince Philip standing in an open Land Rover. Prince William gave a problematic speech that landed like an anvil and the Jamaican Prime Minister told Will and Kate live on camera that Jamaica was definitely leaving the commonwealth.

I didn’t keep track of all of the reactions to Roxane Gay’s pre-Christmas op-ed in the New York Times, but I imagine that it was one of the most-read guest columns in months. Roxane Gay is a royal-watcher and an American, and she wrote the column as an analysis of Netflix’s Harry and Meghan, and the larger conversations about the future of the monarchy post-Sussexit. Gay’s thesis was basically: the monarchy should be dismantled and burned to the ground, and maybe Prince Harry and Meghan should start saying that explicitly. Well, the New York Times got some letters! I wonder how many letters they got about Gay’s column – they certainly got enough to devote a whole “letters to the editor” to the reactions to Gay’s piece. This one was at the top of the NYT’s piece, a letter from Graham Smith, the CEO of the anti-monarchy group Republic.
Re “The Cost of Marrying Into a Monarchy” by Roxane Gay (Opinion guest essay, Dec. 21):
Ms. Gay hit the nail on the head when she said: “But the monarchy doesn’t need to be changed. It needs to be dismantled. If Harry and Meghan were to have acknowledged that, it would have made their story infinitely more interesting.”
The British monarchy is a dysfunctional institution, one that has no place in a modern society. It is central to our constitution that the king formally retains sweeping “prerogative powers” that include declaring wars and signing treaties. We’ve not reformed or repealed these royal powers; we’ve just developed a convention that the king can only use them as instructed by our prime minister, making ours one of the most centralized and unchecked governments in the democratic world.
The monarchy should go for many reasons, some of which Harry and Meghan highlighted perfectly. It is an institution out of touch and out of time, unprincipled and secretive, and it hobbles Britain with a second-rate constitution.
Its abolition is long overdue, and would allow British citizens to embrace equality, democracy and fairness as the guiding principles of our national life — principles and values that are starkly at odds with those of the monarchy.
Graham Smith
London
The writer is the C.E.O. of Republic, a group that campaigns for the abolition of the British monarchy.
I love that Graham Smith wrote in to the NYT with such a clear and concise read. Smith is right, and I do have a sense – sitting here in America – that more people are slowly joining Smith’s republican cause these days, especially following the death of Queen Elizabeth II.
Meanwhile, other people did not have such a clear understanding about Gay’s column and what she was actually saying. One dude basically said that once Harry & Meghan aren’t famous anymore (lol), Harry will go back to the UK and reconcile with his family (lol). There was also one guy who was still bitching about Harry and Meghan’s “Sussex Royal” trademarks. Like… these people still don’t understand that all of the royals trademark all of their brands and names so that other people won’t profit off them?
I sincerely hope this is the kind of dramatic FAFO energy we can bring into 2023. What a story to end the year!! As we discussed, Andrew Tate – the infamous misogynist and right-wing caricature – decided to tweet at Greta Thunberg to show off his car collection. Greta destroyed Tate with one quote-tweet. Tate’s immediate reaction was to go Full Karen and tweet “how dare you?!” at Greta. Then it took Tate about nine or ten hours to think up his comeback: a video in which he spoke to camera and targeted hate at Greta. Well, funny thing about that video: he filmed it in his compound in Romania. The same compound where he traffics and abuses women and girls. Romanian authorities were waiting to arrest Tate when he was back in the country, and because of Tate’s video to Greta, they knew he was back. Because of the pizza box – Jerry’s Pizza is a local Romanian pizza franchise. Hours after Tate made his stupid, small-D clapback video to Greta Thunberg, Romanian authorities swarmed Tate’s compound and arrested Andrew Tate and his brother.
Controversial online influencer Andrew Tate has been detained in Romania as part of a human trafficking and rape investigation. Mr Tate – who was detained alongside his brother Tristan – had his house raided in the capital, Bucharest. A lawyer for the brothers confirmed their detention, Reuters said.
The former kickboxer rose to fame in 2016 when he was removed from British TV show Big Brother over a video which appeared to show him attacking a woman. He went on to gain notoriety online, with Twitter banning him for saying women should “bear responsibility” for being sexually assaulted. He has since been reinstated.
“The four suspects … appear to have created an organised crime group with the purpose of recruiting, housing and exploiting women by forcing them to create pornographic content meant to be seen on specialised websites for a cost,” prosecutors said, according to the Reuters news agency. The brothers have been under investigation since April alongside two Romanian nationals.
Romania’s Directorate for Investigating Organized Crime and Terrorism (DIICOT) issued a statement, but did not name the Tate brothers, stating that two British citizens and two Romanian citizens were suspected of being part of a criminal group focused on human trafficking. The statement said officers had identified six people who were “sexually exploited” by what it called an “organised criminal group”. Police said the victims were “recruited” by the British citizens, who they said had misrepresented their intention to enter into a relationship with the victims – which it called “the loverboy method”.
I hope the Tates go to prison for a very long time. I hope their victims get help and healing. I hope Greta Thunberg continues to exist and thrive to the point where her haters tie themselves in knots and end up defeating themselves. Greta had one more excellent burn left too, which I’m including below.

I don’t know why so many podcasts decided that Kim Kardashian should be their final year-end interview subject, but here we are. This week has been wall-to-wall headlines from Kim’s multiple podcast interviews. Kim also sat down with Gwyneth Paltrow’s Goop podcast, which came out this week. Paltrow asked Kim about marriage, divorce, kids and a lot more. This doesn’t feel shady, btw – Gwyneth is a snob, but she accepts the Kardashian-Jenners, as do most rich people. I think Gwyneth even likes some of the K-Js. Some highlights:
Kim on whether she will ever remarry: “I don’t know,” Kardashian said at first, agreeing with Paltrow that she’s “such a romantic.” She went on to admit, “I am. I am. I have this fantasy in my head, like fourth’s time’s a charm, it’s gonna — it’s gonna work out.”
Her third marriage: “I feel, like honestly, my last marriage was my first real [one] — the first one, I just don’t know what was happening. The second one, I felt like I wanted to be married so badly because all my friends were at that place and that’s where I should have been, and I didn’t accept that that just wasn’t where I was and realized that that was okay. And now, I feel like I would definitely take my time — and I would be okay for a forever partnership as well. I would want a marriage, but I’m so happy to take my time.”
Whether she wants any more kids: As far as wanting more kids, Kardashian is of the “never say never” mindset. “I’m obviously right at the end of that conversation … and would have to have someone in my life for a while to make that decision. Whatever is meant to be will be. I’m taking my time. I really do want to be single for a few years.”
She wants to chill out with her kids now: For now, the mogul says that amid just trying to “focus and chill and go on ski trips” with her kids, she feels that she is having to deal, instead, with the “narratives” created around her. “I don’t know how to get myself out of the narrative — and just keep my head down and stay focused,” she said as Paltrow commended her non-reactive personality and the fact that she’s a “free thinker.”
I think it’s a little bit funny that Kim feels like her third marriage was her first real marriage. On one side, that’s completely understandable – her first marriage was an elopement when she was 19 years old, back when she was a completely different person. Her second marriage lasted 72 days and she literally just married the first guy who asked her because she was turning 30 and she thought her life was over. Comparatively speaking, the marriage to Kanye was the first “real” marriage as in “she went through some real sh-t in that marriage.” Anyway, I kind of hope she doesn’t get remarried or have any more kids. It feels like she needs a breather and she also needs to rebrand a little bit – I’d love to see a 40-something Kim get serious and mature and actually date someone with a real job, someone who could ground her and help her. I’ve been wanting Kim to date a lawyer for a while.
Zoe Saldana covers the latest issue of InStyle to promote Avatar: The Way of Water and the Netflix series From Scratch. I never really think of Zoe as, like, a major, in-demand actress, but she’s part of three big franchises: Avatar, Guardians of the Galaxy and Star Trek. Beyond that, she’s a working actress booking regular films and TV shows. She’s able to wear her stardom lightly, and it feels like she’s still “on the come-up” in some ways, right? Maybe that’s just my perception of her. Anyway, Zoe chatted with InStyle about the environment, her good-looking children and how much her body hurts now (she’s 44). Some highlights:
On Avatar’s impact then and now: “I had no idea Avatar was going to have the impact that it did on such a global scale… I had so much hope that it was going to be well-received, because it just felt so special to me…. This conversation around the environment has become a global social dilemma. And what I admire the most is that the younger generations are the ones that are guiding this narrative.”
On being a woman of color in her industry: “Maybe because I’m a woman of color, you can’t look back into your history and not feel a level of sadness. It’s just history. It’s what happened. I was always more charmed by the prospects of the future and what that would represent,” she says of her explorations on the USS Enterprise and time as Avatar’s Neytiri. “I get to imagine something that is completely unimaginable. It just made me feel more free, that I can try new things and not be judged for it because you can’t compare to anything. I always felt that science fiction gave me that freedom — that sense of escapism — and a sense of comfort.”
Her old dance moves: “I like to believe that I still have it. But no, I probably don’t even have half of what I used to have in terms of ability, range, and elasticity. My body hurts now. It just hurts.”
On her three children: “They are going to grow up to be really pretty nerds. I know that every parent finds their children super-handsome. Maybe that’s what’s to blame. But I look at my kids and I’m like, ‘My god, you guys are so f–king handsome.’”
On being drawn to curious people: “I’ve always felt very insecure around people that are just too cool and that have themselves so put together and know exactly what to say and know everything. I’ve always felt very unstable around people like that,” she says. “I like to be around people that are naturally curious and honest about the curiosity. And when they don’t know something, I like when they say, ‘I don’t know what you’re talking about.’ My kids are like that; they feel so present.”
“Maybe because I’m a woman of color, you can’t look back into your history and not feel a level of sadness.” Minus that terribly-reviewed Nina Simone bio-pic, Zoe has not done many historical films or historical dramas. I always think Black actors are between a rock and hard place, because clearly, every few years, there’s going to be another big movie about American slavery. Some Black actors opt out of that completely, and some wait for the right role in those kinds of “historical” movies. I think the larger point is that all aspects of Black history should be dramatized in film and television, not just the worst parts. I can see why she’s leaned into sci-fi so hard. As for her kids… I’m including a photo of Zoe with her kids from 2018, when they were very little. They are some cute babies. The youngest seems to take after Marco and the twins take after Zoe.

By most official tallies, the Princess of Wales didn’t even break the 100-event threshold this year, even with the artificially padded Court Circular numbers. Kate gets to count “phone calls” and “private meetings” as events on the Court Circular, so those are added to her end-of-year tally. She only did 90-something events in 2022, the poor overworked sausage. What makes Kate’s laziness even more noteworthy is how much it costs to get her to do anything at all. She literally has to be bribed with thousands of dollars worth of clothes, shoes, jewelry & handbags just to leave the castle for an hour. Speaking of, the Daily Mail calculated how much money Kate spent on new clothes & accessories this year and the number is pretty staggering considering how little she actually did.
The Princess of Wales saw the value of her wardrobe soar during 2022 as she returned to regular royal engagements and foreign tours following the end of the Covid-19 pandemic. Kate Middleton wore £176,664 worth of new clothing over the last 12 months, including a host of ball gowns and glittering jewels for royal engagements.
It marks the royal’s most expensive year to date, with a host of new outfits on show – beating 2017 when she wore £119,000 of new outfits.
The future Queen has also continued to rewear and recycle some of her older favourite pieces, as well as donning pieces from high street stores like Zara, Hobbs and Mango. Meanwhile she also dipped into the rental market for the first time, opting to wear a piece from service Hurr to the Earthshot Prize in December.
Her most expensive outfit came when she attended the premiere for Top Gun, where she was dressed in a £2,000 elegant black dress with jewels worth over £10,000.
The King is understood to cover the costs of Kate’s wardrobes for ‘work-related’ engagements through his official household budget, but it is not clear whether the Princess always pays full price for outfits or receives discounts.
In 2021, the royal had slashed her new wardrobe total, wearing £48,845 worth of new clothing.
2020-21 were the years where Kate did a lot of Zoom events and she was shopping online a lot, thus we were constantly seeing her in overpriced sister-wife prairie dresses for some reason. 2022 marked the return of Kate’s love of overpriced bespoke sh-t from Alessandra Rich, McQueen and Roland Mouret. Plus, she keeps buying new sh-t so she can copykeen Meghan. I wonder how much it costs to keep Kate’s Meghan-lookbook up-to-date? Anyway, all of that money and absolutely zero taste or personal style.
Photos courtesy of Avalon Red, Instar, Cover Images and Backgrid.
The Daily Mail regularly tabulates the cost of the Princess of Wales’s clothes, because Kate is a working royal and her excessive wardrobe is paid for by either her father-in-law or, now, the Duchy of Cornwall. Kate’s 2022 clothing expenditures were way too much, especially given the fact that she barely does anything. She spent the year basically showing up to various places and wearing ugly, bespoke frocks and being vacuous. Meanwhile, the Duchess of Sussex has been out of the working-royal game since 2020. She buys her own clothes and no one in Salt Island is responsible for what she spends. The Daily Mail can’t get that through their thick, sexist skulls though, therefore we get stories like this: “Duchess Hollywood! Value of Meghan Markle’s wardrobe boomed to £79,000 in 2022 – despite stepping back from royal duties.”
The Duchess of Sussex is known for her love of designer brands, expensive accessories and glittering jewels worth thousands of pounds. And since quitting the royal family and moving to California, it seems Meghan Markle’s love of a glitzy and glamorous wardrobe has only accelerated.
This year, Meghan wore a wardrobe worth £78,993. It is £20,000 more than her 2021 total, which was £58,388. Meanwhile in 2020, the year she stepped back as life as a senior royal, she donned outfits worth worth £44,188.
While a working member of the royal family, the cost of Meghan’s clothes for work engagements was covered by then-Prince Charles through the budget he gave the couple from the Duchy of Cornwall. But after the couple said they wanted to be financially independent, it is not clear who is picking up the bill for Meghan’s clothes, or whether the Duchess always pays full price for her clothing, or receives discounts from designers.
“It is not clear who is picking up the bill for Meghan’s clothes…” No, it’s not a matter of “it’s not clear” – it’s a matter of “it’s none of your business.” The Mail and/or British taxpayers don’t have any say in what an American woman living in America spends on her clothes. I understand the idle curiosity, and I would love to know if Valentino is sending free stuff to Meghan too, but again – it’s none of my business, and it’s none of the Mail’s business.
