Jared Leto’s Oscar statuette is still almost brand new, but he wants another one. His Joker role in Suicide Squad might lead to another nomination, depending on how good the film itself turns out to be. I think he looks like a disaster in costume, which is fitting for the part. But this Joker seems to try too hard. Then again, I’m only basing this assumption on Jared’s official character still and set photos like this one.

Jared’s so serious about this role that co-star Jai Courtney says he never breaks character no matter what. 24 hours a day, Jared is the Joker. Now he’s done something so method that Shia LaBeouf probably regrets not nabbing this stunt first:

Jared Leto is quite the gift giver. His Suicide Squad co-stars received letters and presents after the Oscar winner wasn’t around much when they first started prepping the movie.

“He sent [Margot Robbie] a nice love letter with a black box with a rat in it — a live rat,” Adam Beach, who plays Slipnot in the Warner Bros. film, told me. “It was beautiful. Then he sent bullets to Will [Smith] with a letter.”

Talk about method gift-giving.

The cast also received a video and — get ready for it! — a “dead hog.”

“Basically, what he said was, ‘Guys, I can’t be there but I want you to know I’m doing my work as hard as you guys,’” Beach said. “The video he showed is in character. It blew our minds away. Then we realized that day, this is real.”

Seeing Leto as the Joker in person for the first time also sounded like a trip. “He encompasses this beautiful man and he shows it in, ‘Hello, how are you?,’ but in an instant, he goes to psychotic behavior where you’re in fear,” Beach said. “But you love him because he has both of those genuine sides.”

This is a really gross story, but it’s easy to believe. This was Jared’s way of acting method even before he arrived on set! God, method actors are so exhausing. Saving it for the cameras seems like a better bet. What if Jared did the most Joker thing ever, and no one ever saw it happen? Then the moment would be wasted.

Speaking of Margot Robbie, a story in this week’s issue of Star says she’s under pressure to lose 20 pounds. The nebulous powers-that-be informed her that she must drop some weight in order to become an A-lister. Margot loves her spaghetti bolognese, so she reportedly told her critics to shove it. Good.

A week ago, Rose McGowan tweeted a gross wardrobe note for an Adam Sandler movie. The note provided instructions to wear a tight tank top and show cleave (“push up bras encouraged“). Rose gave a follow-up statement that said, “It’s embarrassing to be part of [Hollywood] sometimes.” Rose said she “didn’t take a vow of silence when I joined the industry” and compared Hollywood to the Mafia. She also spoke with Entertainment Weekly about how “offended” she was by the wardrobe note.

There are some new developments. Yesterday, Rose tweeted a claim that she’d been “fired by my wussy acting agent” for talking smack.

My initial reaction was to believe Rose had been dropped because she had the guts to talk about Sandler’s low-hanging fruit. Then the agency spoke with Variety to clarify how Rose’s agent, Sheila Wenzel, left the agency earlier this week. The implicaton was that Rose was let go because her agent left, not because of the Sandler stuff. But a different source says “the wheels were already in motion to drop McGowan in light of her comments about the audition.” Variety also spoke with Sandler’s camp, who says he didn’t know anything about the “inappropriate” wardrobe note.

Rose took the high road and tweeted a nice note about her former agent. It sure sounds like she got fired for the Sandler stuff, right?

This is one of the weirder photoshoots I’ve ever seen from Flaunt. Aaron Taylor Johnson posed for what turned out to be a 40-photo editorial – you can see the full slideshow here. Some of the photos are amazing, some not so much. The theme of half the pics is, like, Aaron is some kind of Charles Manson-like cult leader, I think. The other half is just Aaron chilling in the desert. And yes, everyone is talking about the butt shot – you can see it here, it’s kind of NSFW. He has a great butt though. And a really gross belly button. I’m sorry if outies are your jam, but for me, his belly button is a big NOPE. Some highlights from the interview:

He’s so selective: “It’s not just about character, it’s about the filmmaker as well. It’s about working with great directors. I’m so selective. The roles that I’ve turned down are just due to the fact that the character itself didn’t really do it for me, didn’t challenge me enough. I have to connect to that character and know that I’ll be able to properly execute its story alongside the director. When I pick characters, there’s a diversity, something I obviously associate with, and I embed myself in that.”

His marriage to Sam Taylor Johnson: “There’s not much people don’t already know. It’s tricky to be open and candid while maintaining privacy, but the veil’s already been lifted and I think I have a handle on it now.”

His life before Sam: “I worked hard, played hard, and had money to burn. I got myself into some serious, crappy situations. My adolescence was all about wild exploring and experimentation, about doing and trying everything. Searching for what fit right.”

He used to think he was stupid: “I thought I was stupid, wasn’t clever enough. I had really low self esteem, but when I started making films, and was around all these people in the film world, I felt empowered and I felt special. Not because I was an actor, not because of the fame from it. I felt like I finally had a voice. I was able to be openly and freely myself. I was allowed to cry and be emotional. I was allowed to yell and be as bold as I wanted.”

Meeting Sam: “I took my exams at fifteen, finished school and never looked back. After school, I threw myself more into acting, did job after job. Constantly running away. Ultimately, I was just lost. Then my life completely changed with Nowhere Boy, when I met Sam. We just clicked from day one. We’re very close and instantly had a connection. I was just on the cusp at that point. In a way, she helped me transition out of that nomad kind-of-lifestyle. Because I felt secure with her. Second I met Sam, I knew I wanted to stop running, I just wanted to stay in the moment with her. And that’s what it’s been ever since then.”

His journey to Sam, marriage and fatherhood would be a beautiful story – and it is, sort of – except for the fact that Aaron’s “wild adolescence” was basically from the age of 16 to 18. He was 18 when he met Sam and they worked together on Nowhere Man. By the time he was 19, he and Sam were engaged and she was expecting their first child together and he was helping her raise her two daughters from a previous relationship (one of the daughters was 13 when her mom got engaged to a 19-year-old). While I believe that they “clicked” and I think their love is real and everything, I think Aaron plays up the idea that he was such a wild child and Sam saved him somehow, because that is a better story than a 40-something woman perving on a teenage boy.

Lizzy Caplan is promoting the third season of Masters of Sex. As you may remember, I flat-out loved the first season of MoS and I absolutely loathed the second season, where the writers tried to go down some Mad Men-esque plot twists that didn’t have much to do with anything. It was one of the biggest “sophomore slumps” I’ve ever seen. I have every hope that Season 3 will be better though – judging from the preview, Bill Masters and Virginia Johnson finally get around to presenting their findings, which should help the plot along. Anyway, to promote the third season, Lizzy Caplan sat down with Playboy for their “20 Questions” – you can read the full piece here. She chats about feminism, on-screen nudity, what women tell their girlfriends and why she loves a man in tight-whities.

Her male costars doing nudity: “I don’t think Michael Sheen does this, but definitely most of the guys who take their shirts off do push-ups or lift weights. The super-cut guys have these intense regimens. Not only do they work out all day, but they also don’t drink any water and they swallow diuretics for one day. That doesn’t sound great. I guess it’s just as bad for the boys; they’re as vain as we are.”

Whether it’s gotten better for women since the 1950s: “The tough pills that women are expected to swallow have gotten better, but it’s naive to think we’ve come that far from the 1950s. Women are still expected to accept a lower paycheck than a man for the same amount of work. And what about the difficulties every working mother faces, the stigma of leaving her child with a caregiver versus staying home and giving up her own dreams? There’s nothing on our show around the feminist issues that I don’t feel has a huge echo today. If anything, it makes me angry about today. I’ve never said this out loud before, but I don’t know if we’ll get there in my lifetime. Until we can convince our own side—women—that this is a good thing for all of us, I don’t see how we stand a chance convincing all the men.

Women are divided about equality: “Yes. It’s disturbing. It’s not a 50-50 split, but some women have reacted to what I think is the wrong definition of feminism. It doesn’t mean you hate men or you hate sex or you’re a butch lesbian. Feminism is about equality. And yet some women with sway in this world, especially with younger girls, are unwilling to identify as feminists, and I don’t see how that helps. There are still some women fighting against other women who want to make their own reproductive decisions. That just blows my mind.”

How she relaxes: “The end of my day should also involve some deep breathing, some light meditation and perhaps some more stretching. But it usually just ends with watching The Real Housewives. I love it. It’s painful but so meaningless to my life that it’s like junk food. It’s white noise, and for some reason it relaxes me.

She’s a fan of tighty-whities: “I like when guys don’t wear those boxer briefs that go to mid-thigh and look like bike shorts. It’s harder and harder to find. They’re very popular, but I think they look stupid. I prefer old-fashioned tighty-whities or even just boxer shorts. When you discover a man who wears tighty-whities, you hold on to him. It’s so old-school. They’re great.

What men & women need to learn: “For the ladies, I suppose it’s worth assuming that whatever little physical imperfections you obsess over in the mirror are in reality invisible to the man you’re standing naked in front of. He is distracted, you see, by your breasts. For the men: that your girlfriend’s girlfriends know everything about your penis and most things about your balls.”

I laughed at what men should know about their girlfriend’s friends. It’s so true. And I like what she says about feminism too. I wonder if this is a pointed comment at someone specific: “And yet some women with sway in this world, especially with younger girls, are unwilling to identify as feminists…” Kaley Cuoco? Half the pop stars in music today? The Jenner girls? It could be anyone.

Oh, and I don’t get the old-fashioned love for tighty-whities. When a guy has a good body, he can wear any kinds of underwear and look good, but I actually like the look of a guy in boxer briefs.

Congratulations are in order for Noah Wyle and Sara Wells.

The Falling Skies star, 44, and his wife, 35, welcomed their first child together – daughter Frances Harper Wyle – on Monday, June 22, PEOPLE reports.

According to his rep, mom and baby are doing well, and the ER alum is “over the moon.”

The couple – who wed at their farm in Santa Barbara in June 2014 – announced their pregnancy news at the Vanity Fair Oscars afterparty.

Wyle is already dad to daughter Auden, 9½, and son Owen, 12, with ex-wife Tracy Warbin.

A month after cancelling her wedding to Dakota Meyer, 24-year-old Bristol Palin is announcing her second pregnancy.

“I wanted you guys to be the first to know that I am pregnant,” she writes on the religious website Patheos. “Honestly, I’ve been trying my hardest to keep my chin up on this one.”

The former Dancing with the Stars contestant — already mom to son Tripp, 6, from her relationship with ex Levi Johnston — goes on to describe her situation as a “huge disappointment” to her family.

“At the end of the day there’s nothing I can’t do with God by my side, and I know I am fully capable of handling anything that is put in front of me with dignity and grace.

Life moves on no matter what. So no matter how you feel, you get up, get dressed, show up, and never give up.

When life gets tough, there is no other option but to get tougher.

I know this has been, and will be, a huge disappointment to my family, to my close friends, and to many of you.

But please respect Tripp’s and my privacy during this time. I do not want any lectures and I do not want any sympathy.

My little family always has, and always will come first.

In May, Bristol’s mother, Sarah Palin, announced that her wedding was called off.

“Bristol and Dakota couldn’t be more thankful for the love and support of family and friends over the past months while preparing for their wedding,” the former Alaska governor said. “They have informed loved ones that unfortunately the announced celebration will not be held.”
