I really enjoy Carolina Herrera’s clothes. If I was First Lady or a senator, I would wear a lot of Herrera’s designs. She makes sophisticated, beautiful stuff that doesn’t seem too stuffy. Carolina is 76 years old now and still vital and kicking. She sat down with the Washington Post to promote her latest boutique opening in DC. She ended up throwing some well-executed shade at Beyonce and all the celebrity women who walk around nearly naked. Some highlights from the interview:

Designers shouldn’t TRY to be hip & cool: “If you are a designer who is born hip and cool, then fine, you can do it. But I don’t understand a designer who sees hip and cool [young designers] and they want to be like the newcomers. You confuse the client.”

Nakedness is not good design: Some designers think “it’s so modern to be naked or almost naked. They think it’s going to attract younger people if they do those dresses. No! The almost naked! Oh God! They’re trying to get people to pay attention to them. In life, there should be a little mystery.” Herrera turns to the recent Costume Institute gala to make her point. Exhibits A through C: Beyoncé and her bedazzled mosquito netting; Jennifer Lopez in a red beaded gown that was all front and back and no sides; Kim Kardashian with a train of white feathers trailing from a derriere served up for admiration. “They’re supposed to be fashion icons and they’re not wearing anything. It’s an obsession now.”

She’s not against an open neckline, but it has to be done correctly: “If it’s open so much, they look like fried eggs. Fashion is about proportion.”

[From WaPo]

I don’t really think Carolina is saying that she hates Beyonce, J.Lo or Kim Kardashian specifically, I think she’s making a larger statement about fashion. If anything, she’s criticizing Ricardo Tisci (Givenchy), Roberto Cavalli and Donatella Versace for designing clothes for women which are barely even functional as “fashion” or “clothes.” And I agree with her. I’m SO tired of seeing bedazzled illusion netting.

Melissa McCarthy covers this week’s issue of People Magazine, probably because she is genuinely having a great month. Spy opened at #1 last weekend, and the combination of Melissa plus writer/director Paul Feig has proved to be a stellar combination. I saw Spy last weekend too, and I actually thought it was Melissa’s strongest comedic performance ever, going even beyond Bridesmaids (I liked that film but I didn’t think it was the best.comedy.ever like some people). Spy was well-reviewed too and Melissa is a bona fide movie star, one of the few women who can “open” a movie in a lead role.

She’s also promoting her new clothing line. That’s sort of the reason she’s on the cover of People, to shill her clothing line, although I doubt People would have given her the cover if Spy hadn’t been a hit. What sucks a little bit is that we’ve seen some of Melissa’s designs throughout the promotional tour of Spy, and most of us were underwhelmed. Anyway, some highlights from the interview:

How to be funny: For years, she says, Hollywood had certain expectations for female comedians. Being funny “couldn’t be through your personality or actions, you just had to look crazy. I just think that we’ve gotten rid of, luckily, a lot of those guidelines. Funny is funny, and it can come in 8 billion different shades and flavors, so I think it’s silly to kind of limit it.”

She loved working on Spy & she loves how successful it is: “I’m having the time of my life.”

She loves Jason Statham: “Jason Statham was literally crawling up my body like a ladder. And I was like, ‘What am I doing and how did I get here? And how delightful is this?’ ”

Her clothing line Melissa McCarthy Seven7: “You look much better when you’re comfy. From grade school until age 20, I had one thought in my head, which was doing women’s clothing. To get to come back to it, is kind of crazy. It’s pretty dreamy. I started this line because I wanted to know: Where are the normal clothes? This really is a selfish venture. I wanted to build a better closet for myself.”

She has strong feelings about sleeves: “Yes, there are lots of sleeves here! Hallelujah! Do you know how many fights I’ve had about sleeves? I was actually told once [by a manufacturer she’s not working with now], ‘Plus-size women do not want sleeves, in any capacity.’ I was like, ‘Are you crazy? That’s not accurate! I am plus-size, and I want them, I have friends who are size 26 and size 8 and they want a sleeve! Very few things [in Seven7] don’t have sleeves. My stuff has sleeves, my stuff has pockets, you can count on that.”

[From People Magazine]

I believe she was told (probably by someone snotty and a size 2) that plus-sized women don’t want sleeves. I believe it because it seems like the kind of dumb explanation for the sleeve-hatred of so many designers. I love a good sleeve too and I think sleeves-on-gowns and cocktail dress with sleeves are very underrated in the current fashion climate, where tube dresses and mermaid dresses are king. It’s so stupid. So yes, I love that Melissa is standing up for sleeves. But I still think her designs are too Amish, too covered-up.

Jemima Kirke

Girls never took off in my house. Granted, I only watched two episodes but can’t deal with the show’s hipster shtick. Yet I do like Jemima Kirke. She has a fantastic, level head on her shoulders and isn’t afraid to wade into controversial territory. She only does so for a purpose and not for attention. Jemima seems like someone cool to hang out with.

Jemima talks a lot about body image in a new interview with Refinery 29. She discusses the nudity on Girls and how Lena asked her to take it off (again) this season. She says Lena requested “to see some cellulite, please.” Jemima “was tempted to say no” but decided to forge ahead. She introduces the journo to her trainer, Cadence Dubus, who focuses on functional fitness.

The best part of this interview is about how Jemima’s mom passed on her dieting habit, which is interesting. A lot of daughters pick up on this stuff at an early age. I was crestfallen when my girl (at age 4) looked in the mirror and happily said, “Mommy, I look thin.” She heard the term from a relative who shall not be named. Jemima has some perceptive takes on how women treat their bodies in the mirror:

On body image: “I think a lot of women see themselves like Mr. Potato Heads. Like, if they could take this part away, if they could eliminate this part, they would look better. They don’t see themselves as a package. They see themselves as pieces.”

How she started working out: “We need to take the shaming out of the fitness world. I wanted to stay thin while pregnant. That was the thought. That was what I walked in for, and it didn’t stay that way. The first thing I noticed about Cadence was her body. I was like, Oh, she’s not skinny, but she looks so sexy, and she’s so fit. I was like, maybe I can do THAT. Maybe I can just be the fittest version of this.”

Her mom’s mixed messages: “My mom used to say to me, ‘I think you’re beautiful. I think you’re perfect. I just want you to be happy.’ That’s such a mixed message, though … even though she was saying she wanted me to be happy, it still came off as bullying.” She recalls going out to dinner with her parents, her mom ordering that the bread be taken away. “She would say, ‘Listen, you can have it if you want it. I just thought you didn’t want it.’ She knew I wanted to be thinner…and she was always on a diet herself. I think she meant well. I just think she wasn’t equipped … I think it’s important for women around children, whether you’re a mother or not, to never talk about not liking yourself.”

How she looks at her own body: “This sounds so cheesy, but it’s true. I try to look at myself as if I were a man who was really hot for me. I’ll see all the things that make me me, and [I’m] like, that’s hot. That’s how I look at other women. I look at them like, If I was in love with this person, I would love every bit. And, I tell my friends. I’m not doing it to make them feel good. I really mean “

[From Refinery 29]

Jemima also talks about her daughter eats healthy and flexes like Popeye after she finishes eating, which is cute. Body image is such a trigger subject for many women (and men). I feel like girls have a hard enough time growing up without parents passing on their own food issues. Jemima has a healthy attitude. She’s still dealing with stuff her mom said to her about weight, but we’re all works in progress.

Ben Affleck & Jennifer Garner Take Seraphina Toy Shopping

A-listers Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner stepped out with their daughter Seraphina, 6, and a friend in Brentwood, Calif. on Wednesday (June 10).

Amid split rumors, the couple put on a united front while shopping at Toy Crazy in the Brentwood Country Mart.

On Sunday, Ben and Jen were spotted with Seraphina and their 3-year-old son Samuel.

The couple – who are also parents to 9-year-old daughter Violet – are reportedly on the rocks.

According to Entertainment Tonight, Ben and Jen might be headed for a divorce. The parents-of-three have their 10-year wedding anniversary coming up on June 29.

Last month, Jennifer opened up to Yahoo! Parenting about their marriage.

“You just go on a ride together because you don’t know who you’re going to be when you first have a baby and you don’t know who [your partner] is going to be. You have to just hang in there while you figure it out — and have a lot of patience for each other,” she shared.

This is why I creep Guy Ritchie’s Instagram. Because that’s the only way we’re getting any shots of Charlie Hunnam. He’s directing him in Knights Of The Round Table. And who’s complaining about new shots of Charlie Hunnam?
