Cameron Crowe’s upcoming romcom, Aloha, was scheduled for a Christmas 2014 release. Sony didn’t feel confident enough and held the movie for a May 29 release. The cast is filled with prominent white actors, including “odd bird” Bradley Cooper, Rachel McAdams, Emma Stone, Bill Murray, and Danny McBride. Page Six has a new story about how the film is already a disaster. Amy Pascal called the movie “ridiculous” because “it never, not even once, ever works.” Sony has placed an embargo on film reviews and cast interviews until the night before Aloha hits theaters.
More trouble is brewing. An Asian-American group has criticized Cameron Crowe for “whitewashing” his cast in manner of Ridley Scott’s Exodus. The group accuses Crowe of hiring white actors for their recognizable faces rather than casting realistically for Hawaii’s demographic:
An Asian-American group is blasting Jerry Maguire director Cameron Crowe for having “whitewashed” Asian-Pacific Islanders out of his new film set in Hawaii.
A blistering press release from Media Action Network for Asian Americans (MANAA) charges that Crowe’s troubled new rom-com, Aloha, which opens next week, reserves virtually all of its prime roles for white actors — a stellar cast including Bradley Cooper, Bill Murray, Emma Stone, Rachel McAdams, Alec Baldwin, Danny McBride and John Krasinski.
“Caucasians only make up 30 percent of the population [of Hawaii], but from watching this film, you’d think they made up 99 percent,” says MANAA’s Guy Aoki, a former resident of Hawaii.
“This comes in a long line of films — The Descendants, 50 First Dates, Blue Crush, Pearl Harbor — that uses Hawaii for its exotic backdrop but goes out of its way to exclude the very people who live there. It’s an insult to the diverse culture and fabric of Hawaii.”
The group points out that minorities can be enthusiastic ticket buyers: The seventh installment of The Fast and the Furious has sold more than $300 million worth of tickets in North America — 75 percent of those to non-white fans.
The biggest roles for Asian-Pacific Islanders in the film, Aoki claims, are for “Indian pedestrian,” “upscale Japanese tourist” and “upscale restaurant guest.” “They didn’t even have names,” Aoki adds. Referring to Crowe’s comment on social media that he wanted to play off the rich history of Hawaii, Aoki says, “How can you educate your audience to the ‘rich history’ of Hawaii by using mostly white people and excluding the majority of the people who live there and who helped build that history — APIs?”
[From Page Six]
From the impersonal description of the Asian-Pacific Islanders that do appear in this movie, it sounds like the film has been largely whitewashed. I can see why the MANAA is upset. Hawaii is usually portrayed as an exotic backdrop, a Disneyland of sorts with hula dancers being the only representation of Hawaiians or Pacific Islanders. Crowe made what looks like a throwaway romcom, but that’s no excuse. He also made specific mention about how he wanted to honor Hawaii’s “rich history” through this tale. So why the whitewashing?
Here’s the trailer for Aloha. It looks like a really bad movie.

I know it’s wrong, but I love North West’s little Black Swan get-up. Black tutu, black leotard, black tights, black ballet slippers, black leather jacket. The whole ensemble is utterly adorable. These are photos of Kim Kardashian taking North to her ballet class in LA. I’m actually a little bit surprised that Kim is in LA this week! Her first wedding anniversary with Kanye is May 24th, this Sunday. There were widespread reports that Kanye was going to take Kim to Paris to celebrate, possibly to renew their vows at the Eiffel Tower. For what it’s worth, Gossip Cop says that a vow renewel won’t be happening. But I kind of wonder if Kanye will take Kim away for a little holiday.
Also – the reviews are in for Kim’s coffee table book of selfies, Selfish. Apparently, book critics sort of like it? The critics acknowledge that the whole book is extraordinarily vapid and superficial, but most acknowledge that the book is pretty fun and it’s a very easy escapism, looking at Kim and her jet-set lifestyle. You can read a round-up of reviews here.
Kim also sat down to talk about Kylie Jenner’s recent shocking (!!!) admission that yes, Kylie has been doing lip injections for a while. Kim said: “I saw how for so many years she was so insecure about [her lips]. I mean, at 10 years old, she would say to me, ‘How come my lips aren’t big like you guys?’ And I would see this insecurity … For me, I gave her advice and I still stand by that advice. I think it changed her confidence so much.” The thing about is though… Kim’s lips used to be smaller too. She either had a lip implant or she gets lip injections on the reg. So this is what we mean when we say Kim’s bad decisions affect younger women. There’s a very close-to-home example – Kim wanted to look like a blow-up doll, so she mangled her already-beautiful face with Botox, fillers, plastic surgery and lip injections and then her youngest sister was like, “Why don’t I look like that?” And will North feel the same way?
Oh, and when Kim was asked during this Billy Bush interview if it ever annoys her when people ask her what she does for a living, Kim sort of went off: “To be honest, I don’t really pay attention to it… I get more fed up with questions like – I was traveling recently and I was doing a press day and people were like, ‘How do you feel when people say what do you do?’ And I’m like, I’m here working aren’t I? Like, I’m here to promote something. I said, ‘Hey why don’t you do this – tell someone else that you think can do it. Tell them to do everything that I’ve done in my career and see if they end up where I’m at.’ Try it. Just try it. I dare you.”

Supermodel Nicole Trunfio covers Elle Australia‘s June issue while breastfeeding her 4-month-old son Zion.
“This wasn’t a contrived situation: Zion needed a feed, Nicole gave it to him, and when we saw how beautiful they looked we simply moved her onto the set,” editor-in-chief Justine Cullen said. “It was a completely natural moment that resulted in a powerful picture.”
The model mom, 29, took to Instagram with a special message about the breastfeeding cover.
“There is nothing more powerful and beautiful than motherhood,” she captioned the cover. “The last thing I want to do is be controversial, so please take this for what it is, let us #normalizebreastfeeding there is nothing worse than a mother that is judged for feeding her hungry child in public. #weareonlyhuman I’m so proud of this cover and for what it’s stands for. I obviously don’t look like this while I am breastfeeding but this stands for all women out there, whether you breastfeed or not, we gave birth, we are women, we are mothers. Thank you to ELLE for being so bold and making such an encouraging, positive and healthy statement. #womenunite.”
Zion is the model’s first child with fiancé and Grammy winner Gary Clark Jr.
“When I saw the [subscriber] cover of me breastfeeding, which was unplanned and just natural, I teared up and thought, ‘Wow this is such a special moment where my worlds have collided’,” Trunfio said of her reaction to seeing the breastfeeding cover.

I only recently became aware of the fact that there are Emma Stone-and-Andrew Garfield superfans, and those superfans are super-Twihardy about Emma and Andrew being together forever and ever. I’m not even joking about the Twihard thing – there was a concerted effort by Emma & Andrew’s superfans to “push back” against the widespread reports that they had split, to the point of Twitter harassment and a misinformation campaign to discredit all of the breakup rumors. The breakup rumors started at Star Magazine, yes, but within a week, all of the major outlets (People, E! News and Us Weekly) were running stories about the Stone-Garfield demise. The stories were pretty easy to write too: Andrew and Emma had been apart for months, he didn’t come to the Oscars with her, and “sources close to Emma” were saying some bad stuff about Andrew’s behavior.
So what now? Andrew is back in the States after completing filming on Silence in Taiwan. Emma is doing some promotional work for Aloha and Irrational Man, but she’s been back in LA this week too. And for a few days, there have been multiple reports that Emma and Andrew have been seen out and about together… but they haven’t been photographed together. Still, E! News says they’re back on:
Everyone can rest easy, because it seems like everything on the Emma Stone and Andrew Garfield front are back on track. Fans of the Hollywood couple began filling up with hope after the duo, who were reportedly on the outs, were seen together again on multiple occasions. And although it was known that these two were spending some time apart, E! News learns that they never officially broke up.
“It was always a ‘break’ due to schedules,” a source tells E! News. “They have been really busy, so they finally have had time to see each other again. They care for each other and always have the best time when together.”
Stone and Garfield have been finding more time to be with each other as of late, with their most recent outing happening just last night. The two lovebirds stepped out to Sushi Park in West Hollywood on Wednesday for some dinner and weren’t shy about showing off some PDA.
According to an eyewitness, the pair “definitely looked like they were back together.”
Emma and Andrew were dressed super casual and sat at the sushi bar for their meal. Garfield wrapped his arm around his lady at one point, according to the insider, and spotted fellow celeb pal Amy Poehler at the restaurant before leaving. The famous trio stopped and chatted for a few minutes before leaving the venue.
[From E! News]
So the Stone-Garfield Twihards can rest easy tonight. I’m still not entirely convinced that these multiple “sightings” of Stone and Garfield haven’t simply come from an unhinged Stone-Garfield Twihard though – it’s not that difficult to email a “tip” to E! News about having just seen your two favorite people holding hands OMG, you know? That kind of thing happened all the time with the original Twihard couple, K-Stew and Sparkles. So… we’ll see. My guess is that they did take a break for a few months and now they’re working things out.

Here is what I hope will be the last Cannes amfAR gala fashion post! There were more people than I was expecting, but I was right about it being so model-heavy. Sigh… I like seeing what models are wearing, but I would have loved it if more movie stars came out for this year’s amfAR gala. And since Cannes is coming to an end this weekend, this is probably my last Cannes post this year with Aishwarya Rai as the lead lady. I love her! She wore this lilac Elie Saab. Beautiful color, completely mundane design. Still, I’m glad that the gown doesn’t actively distract from her face.
We finally got to see Diane Kruger in Chanel this week, although Joshua Jackson is still MIA. I’m worried, you guys. What if they’re having problems?! Anyway, I dislike this Chanel on Diane, but whatever.
Isabella Rossellini. She is everything. Bow down!
Petra Nemcova in Versace. This is her best look so far at Cannes, but that’s mostly because she’s finally covered up.
Toni Garrn in colorful Elie Saab – I’ll give her this, this gown stood out. Too bad it was on such a bland model!
Adrien Brody and his long-time girlfriend Lara Lieto. I really can’t with them. But her dress IS rather nice.
Eva Longoria in Georges Hobeika. She’s worn versions of this dress a million times. She’s in such a style rut!
Alicia Vikander in Louis Vuitton. She’s one of the brand ambassadors for LV. Do you think this is a good association? Meh.

Michael Fassbender was apparently one of the co-sponsors of this gala. It’s a shame he didn’t walk the carpet then, you know?

The Cannes amfAR gala is probably the most glamourous event at the Cannes Film Festival every single year. This year’s gala was well-attended, but it seemed especially model-heavy. There weren’t very many proper actors, but at least Marion Cotillard was there to anchor the whole evening in this rather inspired look. Marion usually wears Dior for her biggest nights, so I was surprised to see her in this bright lime green gown from Jean Paul Gaultier. I LOVE IT. I love it on her specifically. Marion can be sort of airy-fairy in her style and her personality, usually choosing fanciful, at time bizarre ensembles for herself. It’s wonderful to see her looking like a proper “movie star”. She looks glamorous and perfect. Love this.
Gigi Hadid in Tom Ford. This is a white version of the gown Julianne Moore wore to the BAFTAs in February. Julianne’s version had a better fit, and Julianne’s boobs weren’t falling out like Gigi’s. Still, pretty girl and it’s a big deal for her to wear Tom Ford for such a major event. Ten bucks says that Leonardo DiCaprio has been trying to get Gigi on his yacht all week.
Dita Von Teese in Ulyana Sergeenko. I hate this on Dita. Imagine Dita is she had gone for something exquisitely glam, like Cotillard. This is a fashion fail for Dita.
Chanel Iman in Zuhair Murad Couture. Is it wrong to love this? Because I flat-out love it.
Sarah Ferguson in a conservative red gown. This is the gala-version of wearing a black pantsuit to work.
Georgina Chapman in Marchesa. Such a mess. She can’t even design clothes for herself.
Karolina Kurkova in Alexis Mabille Couture. Like Chanel Iman’s gown, I love this for what it is: big and dramatic and interesting.
Zoe Kravitz in Vionnet. SOOOO boring.

Kendall Jenner looked incredible at the Cannes amFAR gala. Unlike her recent peekaboo disaster dress, Kendall did well in a Calvin Klein gown. This partnership may be mutually beneficial after all. Kendall’s purple dress was one of my favorites of the evening. The top is so simple, almost like a swimsuit. The skirt is full and flouncy. Kendall had a grand time waving her gown around for the cameras. The only problem I have with this look is how her hair looks stringy. She needs to pull it back out of her face.
Harvey Weinstein called Rita Ora “a breathtaking actress,” and here she is wearing Marchesa. Is this dress supposed to look like a rose? So much peplum, so much tacky awfulness. Rita made matters worse by blowing kisses on the grey carpet.
Irina Shayk wore an Atelier Versace gown in emerald-green. This was a daring gown with potential for a wardrobe malfunction, but she has the body to pull off all the sheer paneling. Can you believe Bradley Cooper is dating her?
Michelle Rodriguez has been wearing lots of monochromatic sheath dresses lately, but she went for something different. This shiny Romona Keveza gown is absolutely gorgeous on Michelle. The color looks a little valentine-y, but the dress was perfectly tailored. The Chopard diamond necklace is amazing.
Melissa George wore a flouncy Schiaparelli couture gown made of tulle. I think she was going for drama and ended up with a cutesy dress. The giant bustle was overkill, and the embellishments looked like funfetti.
Mary J. Blige wore an off-white Versace column gown, which was covered in Swarovski crystals. This dress seemed dated, and the bright yellow nails didn’t enhance its appeal.
Izabel Goulart wore a color-blocked, bodycon gown and a statement necklace. She managed to do too much and not enough at the same time.

We’re breaking up the Cannes amfAR gala photos into several different posts, just FYI. The amfAR gala is always one of the biggest – if not THE biggest – events of the Cannes Film Festival. This year’s gala was very, very model-heavy. So let’s start with my favorite model (because I learned, on the job, that I’m really into Dutch women) Doutzen Kroes. Doutzen wore this Maison Margiela gown which… is not my jam. First off, this was designed by John Galliano and I still have issues, despite his reemergence as a fashion force. Second of all, it makes her look pregnant, and by that I mean it’s a shapeless, bell-like sack dress. Angelina Jolie would love it. I will give Doutzen this: the face is FLAWLESS.
Lara Stone in Saint Laurent… since I’m into Dutch women, I like Lara. But I’m worried about her. Her marriage fell apart and her appearances at Cannes have not been great. Her hair is too white-blonde, the gowns don’t fit and she just doesn’t seem like she’s feeling great.
Jourdan Dunn in Vera Wang. I really like the color and I appreciate that it’s not satin. Beyond that, I’m ambivalent.
Sienna Miller in Ralph Lauren. She’s worn at least two versions of this dress in Cannes this week. Her stylist used to do a much better job.
Barbara Palvin in another look that is too mature – this is La Perla Atelier. I complained about her Versace look yesterday – it was something I could have seen on Jane Fonda. This is another one that makes her look much older.
Karlie Kloss in Tom Ford. I’m impressed that it’s Tom Ford, but beyond the label, it’s kind of a boring dress. Ford’s doing a lot of built-in chokers and it’s not my style.
Paris Hilton is still around, shockingly. This gown actually wasn’t the worst thing on the carpet.
Madalina Ghenea was there. I’m starting to wonder how many of Michael Fassbender’s ex-lovers are wandering around Cannes this week. Perhaps that’s why he’s been hiding in his hotel for days.

****Note: The following story is profoundly disturbing. It involves details of child molestation. Trigger warning
You just knew it was going to get worse, but even this stunned me. Earlier this week, In Touch Weekly reported that back in 2005, Jim-Bob Duggar (the patriarch of the Duggar family/cult) turned in his oldest son Josh to the local Arkansas police. At the time, Josh was 17, and the police opened up an investigation after Jim-Bob said that he caught Josh sneaking out of a bedroom belonging to a female minor. The earlier report was extremely vague, but yesterday In Touch released a longer, more detailed report, based on a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) filig for the police report concerning Josh Duggar – you can see the documentation here at ITW. As it turns out, the actual crimes took place more in the 2002-03 years and by the time the police investigation was opened, the statute of limitations was passed in most cases. In Touch Weekly’s reporting (based on redacted police reports) is detailed, and I’m only publishing a portion:
Jim Bob Duggar waited more than a year after his son confessed to sexually molesting several female minors before contacting police. What’s more, Jim Bob informed the elders of his church about Joshua’s actions and they waited three months before contacting authorities. Jim Bob also refused to allow police to interview Josh when they opened a felony investigation in 2006. (Note: that Josh’s name is redacted from the police report but In Touch has confirmed the passages that refer to him.) Josh Duggar was investigated for multiple sex offenses, including forcible fondling, against five minors. Some of the alleged offenses investigated were felonies.
Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar were interview by the Springdale Police department on Dec. 12, 2006. The report says that James told police he was alerted in March, 2002 by a female minor that Josh had been touching her breasts and genitals while she slept. This allegedly happened on multiple occasions. Josh turned 14 on March 3, 2002. In 2006, Jim Bob told police that in July, 2002 Josh admitted to fondling a minor’s breasts while she slept. “James said that they disciplined (redacted, Josh) after this incident.” The family did not alert authorities. Jim Bob told police that about nine months later in March, 2003 “there was another incident.” Josh was again accused by a female minor of touching her breasts and genitals. Josh was accused by several minors of touching their genitals, often when they slept, but at times when they were awake.
Jim Bob then “met with the elders of his church and told them what was going on.” No one alerted the police or any other law enforcement agency. Instead they decided to send Josh to a “program [that] consisted of hard physical work and counseling. James said that [redacted, Josh] was in the program from March 17, 2003 until July 17, 2003.” He said the program was a “Christian program.” Michelle Duggar later admitted to police that Josh did not receive counseling and instead had been sent during that time to a family friend who was in the home remodeling business. Asked about the training center that Jim Bob said Josh was sent to, Michelle told police, according to the report, “it was not really a training center. Det. [Darrell] Hignite asked if the guy [redacted, Josh] talked to was a certified counselor. She said no. She said it was a guy they know in Little Rock that is remodeling a building. Det. Hignite asked if the guy was more of a mentor. She said “kind of.”
The Duggars told police that Josh “apologized” to the female minors and that they had “forgiven” him. An alleged victim told police in 2006 that Josh had told “mother and dad what had happened… (and) asked for forgiveness. The report notes the alleged victim says Josh “sought after God and had turned back to God.” Jim Bob told police that “several members of their church were aware of the situation and had been supportive of the family.” Police interviewed several of the alleged minor victims in December, 2006. They told police that Josh had touched their breasts and sex organs.
Jim Bob told police in 2006 that when Josh returned home in 2003 Jim Bob, accompanied by some of his church elders, took Josh to Arkansas State Trooper Jim Hutchens. Jim Bob knew Hutchens personally. Hutchens did not take any official action and instead gave Josh a “very stern talk.” As In Touch magazine reports exclusively in this week’s issue, Hutchens is now serving 56-years in prison for child pornography. He took no action on the Duggar case.
[From In Touch Weekly]
Just a few hours after In Touch Weekly’s report came out, TMZ had more details about the actual numbers – Josh was investigated for molesting five girls, “some of whom are his sisters.” Which is horrific. TMZ also says that the police are going to destroy the investigation reports because one of the victims is concerned that her name will become public.
Then late last night, the Duggars issued statements to People Magazine exclusively – you can read the statements here. Josh admits to the crimes, saying:
“Twelve years ago, as a young teenager, I acted inexcusably for which I am extremely sorry and deeply regret. I hurt others, including my family and close friends,” Josh, 27, tells PEOPLE in a statement. “I confessed this to my parents who took several steps to help me address the situation. We spoke with the authorities where I confessed my wrongdoing, and my parents arranged for me and those affected by my actions to receive counseling. I understood that if I continued down this wrong road that I would end up ruining my life. I would do anything to go back to those teen years and take different actions. I sought forgiveness from those I had wronged and asked Christ to forgive me and come into my life. In my life today, I am so very thankful for God’s grace, mercy and redemption.”
[Via People]
He also resigned from his position as a lobbyist for the Family Research Council, because of course he did. People also got statements from Jim-Bob and Michelle about how difficult Josh’s actions were for them (no mention of his victims, some of whom were their daughters?). There’s also a statement from Josh’s wife Anna, who says that Josh came clean with her about his previous assaults on children before he and Anna even got married.
Oh and just FYI, in case you were wondering… Josh is the father of three children, Mackynzie, Marcus and Michael.
