Full confession: I only really like big dogs. I’ve never had a small dog and never really wanted to. My dog is a big Newfie mix, more than 100 pounds, and he resembles a bear cub. He’s a pain in my ass but I love him to pieces. So I was interested in hearing that Sienna Miller got a Newfie girl puppy a few years ago. She named the dog Nana and she was adorable as a puppy. Nana grew up to be a big hulk of a dog (go here to see a photo of Sienna with Nana), which is what happens when you get a Newfie puppy. But this growth apparently shocked Sienna, and she has given the dog up. Huh.

It was clearly difficult for Sienna Miller to resist Newfoundland puppy Nana when she was a tiny black bundle. But it seems the American Sniper actress failed to factor in the breed’s astonishing growth rate – they can weigh up to 9st and measure 6ft from nose to tail.

Now three years after bringing Nana home, the dog has been adopted by Sienna’s stepmother Kelly Hoppen, who owns a sprawling estate in the Cotswolds.

It’s a sensible move – Sienna, who has a two-year-old daughter, Marlowe, and another dog, Bess – previously admitted that on walks Nana ‘pulls me over flat on my face into the mud’.

[From The Daily Mail]

One side: she’s a total douchebag for not understanding that one day that adorable Newfie puppy would end up as a huge dog. I hate people who don’t understand the basics of dogs, or are like “Oh, I only wanted a small puppy, not a big dog.” Then don’t adopt a Newfie puppy!

The other side: my Newfie mix had a few years where he was bit crazy and temperamental and every dog is different. I could see where it could be a case of hoping Nana would be a gentle giant and Nana ending up being much more of a handful than expected. And Sienna prioritized her daughter ahead of Nana and found Nana a good home in the country, where she could run and be wild all the time.

Here’s a random Newfie.

Saturday Night Live 40th Anniversary Special

Last month, Rita Wilson went public with her breast cancer diagnosis and decision to have a double mastectomy. Rita wrote a moving essay for People Magazine describing her difficult choice, and explaining that she only learned of her breast cancer after seeking a second opinion. Rita’s first doctor gave her the all clear and she only decided to consult another doctor after a friend, a breast cancer survivor, encouraged her. After all she went though, Rita wanted to get the word out about the need to take charge of your health care.

Rita has a new profile in The NY Times, following her return to Broadway in “Fish in the Dark” with Larry David. it’s a sobering look at what she’s gone through. It sounds like she’s recovering well and that she has a lot of support around her (particularly her husband of 27 years, Tom Hanks, whom she gushes about). However, it sounds grueling and tiring too. Apparently there’s an interim step between getting a mastectomy and have reconstructive surgery. I’ve never heard about this – it’s called a tissue expander and helps make room for the implants. Rita is in this stage and while it sounds very uncomfortable for her, she’s hopeful for the future. Here’s more:

Why she went public
She was ambivalent about this too. Among other things, talking openly about mastectomy seems to invite everyone to stare at and speculate about one’s postoperative breasts, and who wants that? (“But I guess people always look at women’s breasts anyway,” she said.)

“For me, this is about telling people, ‘You can get a second opinion — your insurance will pay for it, even Obamacare, God bless it, will pay for it,’ ” she said. “It’s so easy to say, ‘I’m just being paranoid,’ but you should trust your gut.”

She said she had been astounded and touched by the warmth of people’s response. In her Manhattan apartment building, neighbors she had barely met sent up little gifts — cookies, flowers, body cream. All four of her and Mr. Hanks’s children came to visit.

How her husband supported her
And before and after the surgery, the couple hunkered down at home, laughing, crying and watching movies. Luckily, they had a pile of Academy Award screeners in enticing DVD cases, begging to be viewed.

Neither she nor Mr. Hanks had ever been seriously ill before, so it was new territory. “Who knew it would make you even closer?” she said.

“You never know how your spouse is going to react in a situation like this,” she added. “I was so amazed, so blown away by the care my husband gave me. It was such a normal, intimate time…”

How she’s doing now
Though the cancer was detected early and she did not need chemotherapy or radiation, Ms. Wilson still feels exhausted. Her body is not what it was. Although Hollywood is practically ground zero for women with breast implants, Ms. Wilson had never gone that route.

“Let’s face it — it’s an amputation,” she said, of the mastectomy. And for people who do not know this, there is an interim step between a mastectomy and reconstructive surgery, in which a device called a tissue expander is inserted into your chest to make room gradually for new breasts.

Right now, the expander feels hard and weird and looks nothing like what breasts should look like, Ms. Wilson said. She can’t wear a proper bra. For the time being, she is sticking to loose tops and layers.

But she is hardly at the muu-muu stage of life. When she does have the reconstruction, Ms. Wilson said, “I think it’s going to look awesome.”

[From The NY Times]

Kudos to Rita for both going public with the news of her cancer and being open about how difficult it is. She also admitted that she’s not always comfortable with public attention but that she wanted to get the word out. Rita said “I’m in public because of the nature of what I do, but I don’t feel it necessary to let the world know what I’m thinking, where I’m eating. I’ve always liked being on the periphery of things.” I loved how she joked about the speculation as to whether she’s had implants yet. “People always look at women’s breasts anyway.” She sounds so grateful for the help and support she’s been given by her husband and by the people around her. The public is definitely on her side too, and we’re hoping she’s fully recovered soon.

Last week, we heard that Beyonce lost “65 pounds” doing the 22-Day Revolution diet, by Beyonce’s personal business partner/dietician Marco Borges. I personally do not believe Beyonce “lost” 65 pounds, even if we’re counting pillowy pregnancy weight. She definitely lost weight though – she looked SO small in the Met Gala photos last week, and we should know because Beyonce was basically naked at the Met Gala, so we could see nearly every part of her body. But 65 pounds lighter in the past year and a half? Not so much.

But now I’m guessing that the “65 pounds” is all part of Beyonce’s new shill – Beyonce, Jay-Z and Marco Borges have launched their vegan meal delivery service, based on Borges’ 22-Day Revolution diet. To promote the meal delivery service, Bey did an interview with the New York Times a few days ago. And when I say “interview” I mean “she emailed a statement to the NYT.” The NYT reporter was peeved about that, because an actual interview with Beyonce was on her schedule. The reporter was supposed to do a phone interview “as had been promised for more than a month. Beyoncé, a representative explained, has not answered any direct questions for more than a year. Just back from vacation in Hawaii, she politely responded by email, sounding rather less fiery than the company’s South American fiesta lentils.” Beyonce does not speak directly to peasants or journalists. If she wants to be interviewed, she will interview herself. So, here are some highlights from the NYT story:

The 22-Days thing is soy-free, dairy-free and gluten free: Beyonce says, “First it’s important that you know I am not a vegan.”

Borges is rebranding “vegan”: He prefers saying “plant-based” because with vegan, “you picture someone who lives in Colorado that doesn’t wear deodorant. There’s a negative stereotype.”

She’s not a cook: “I don’t really cook, but I’m a really good taste tester.”

Bey loves the diet: “At first it’s the little things I noticed: I had more energy… The benefits of a plant-based diet need to be known. We should spend more time loving ourselves, which means taking better care of ourselves with good nutrition and making healthier food choices.”

Bey & Jay hired an advisor to launch this diet and the NYT notes: “Not everything Beyoncé and Jay Z have touched turns to gold. Beyoncé’s fashion line, House of Dereon, for example, has a defunct website, and Jay Z recently took to Twitter to defend Tidal, his streaming music service. To help take the food brand both big and international, the company recently brought on Anne McKevitt, who has advised companies like Walmart and Mercedes.”

Bey on adjusting to the diet: She noticed “a noticeable glow to my skin without having to deprive myself of carbs. I even slept better.”

[From The NY Times]

I imagine this meal delivery service will go over as well as Tidal? Ha. I actually read the whole NYT piece and it was profoundly stupid. I get the impression that Jay and Bey live in such a sycophantic bubble that they just think that everything they do is brilliant and every one of their ideas must be heard and beloved. They think, “oh, we’ll invest in this meal delivery thing and it will be amazing, we barely even need to promote it because everyone loves us and wants to do what we do.” And the whole “it’s not really vegan” thing bugs me – it’s totally vegan. And Beyonce had to tell Borges that he needed to put more salads in the meals!! How did a vegan dietician not understand that people trying a vegan diet need salads?

Here’s a photo of Beyonce in NYC a few days ago. She wore a romper with matching shoes!!!

I’m a big fan of the Notorious RBG, also known as Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. President Clinton nominated RBG to the Supreme Court back in 1993 and since then, she’s become the Liberal Conscience of the court. Feminists and fans gave her the affectionate nickname The Notorious RBG (which she loves, by the way) because she has no f—ks to give and she takes principled, well-reasoned liberal stances on a host of issues before the court. RBG is also 82 years old and refusing to retire, despite some calls for her to step down while a Democrat holds the White House. She has repeatedly said that she still feels vital and that she will not be retiring during Pres. Obama’s tenure.

Why this background information? Well, someone in Hollywood thinks it would be a good idea to make a bio-pic about a sitting Supreme Court Justice. And someone wants Natalie Portman to play the Notorious RBG.

Natalie Portman is set to play Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg in On The Basis Of Sex, with Marielle Heller (The Diary Of A Teenage Girl) in negotiations to direct. Focus Features is in talks to come onboard to finance. The script, which follows the travails of Ginsburg as she faced numerous obstacles to her fight for equal rights throughout her career, was written by Daniel Stiepleman and made the 2014 Black List. Robert W. Cort is producing with Ram Bergman exec producing.

Ginsberg was appointed to the Supreme Court in 1993 by then-President Clinton, becoming only the second female justice (after Sandra Day O’Connor) and the first Jewish female justice. Prior to that, she developed a reputation as a keen advocate for the advancement of women’s rights. Time magazine this year labeled her an “Icon” in its Time 100. The classy project is coming together quickly with a hoped-for production start by the end of the year. That would put it ahead of Alex Garland’s sci-fi project Annihilation, for which Portman has been rumored.

[From Deadline]

On one side, we always complain that Hollywood doesn’t make enough movies about strong women, about political women, about women who fight for what they believe in. On the other side… this sounds like it could end up doing a great disservice to RBG. It sounds like it could definitely veer into some Lifetime-esque drama. I’m guessing that, considering Portman’s age, this would only be focused on RBG’s pre-Supreme Court days, like back in the 1960s and ‘70s. Which also means that the whole thing could read like Mad Men-without-the-ennui. I don’t know, maybe it’s because Portman is attached to it, but I’m really not feeling this.
