Here are some photos of Prince Harry finishing up his military training in Australia last week with the Australian Defence Force. Can I just say? Harry looks really badass in these photos. Like he could lead men into war. It’s sort of a shame that he’s retiring from his military career because I think it was something he enjoyed and something he was genuinely good at. You can read more about his training exercises here.
After Australia, Harry flew to New Zealand for a royal tour, his first of NZ. He also did a lengthy interview with Sky News and he ended up talking about how he can’t wait to have kids! Some assorted quotes (I’m including the video of the interview below):
Harry on the idea of settling down: “There come times when you think now is the time to settle down, or now is not, whatever way it is, but I don’t think you can force these things it will happen when it’s going to happen. Of course, I would love to have kids right now, but there’s a process that one has to go through and… tours like this are great fun. Hopefully I’m doing all right by myself. It would be great to have someone else next to me to share the pressure. But, you know, time will come and whatever happens, happens.”
Leaving the military: “It is a crossroads. I’m in the same position now as other people in my year group, or my rank would be in. Because I’m a non-grad, I’m slightly behind everybody else. And most of the guys I joined with … have already left, for numerous reasons. But it is a case of, if we move on, more responsibilities come. And, I suppose with wanting to take on slightly more of (the royal duties) role, I don’t really feel I would be in the right position (to help) the careers of more soldiers or to take on the responsibility of continuing to fly, for instance. So it is a balance, and I’ve tried to get it right over the last six months to a year, before I finished. And it was getting hard. As I said: I’m at a crossroads. A lot of guys my age, when they get to captain, they leave, and that’s because a lot of guys join for the outside, for the excitement of running around in the bush with soldiers and there is a point when you have to take the next step and go to a desk and do staff college and become a major and so on. And with all that comes responsibilities and a lot of your time, which, if I’m doing this sort of stuff, it doesn’t work. I don’t want people to cover for me.”
His royal role: “As long as people back home … know that they can trust me, that I’m making the right decision and that whatever it is, it will be something that means I can give something back. This part of the role is fantastic but I and William – both of us – feel as though we need to have a wage as well; to work with normal people, to keep us sane, to keep us ticking along. In the future, from our point of view, if we want to make a big contribution, or a valid contribution and be taken seriously, then we need to work alongside other people.”
His niece Princess Charlotte: “I didn’t see any coverage at all. He sent me two photos; one before everybody else, which was nice, and then another – one with her back with George back home. So, as I said, I’m so looking forward to seeing her, to meeting her and to holding her. She was a little bit late, hence I missed her. So she’ll have to work on that! But apart from that, it’s fantastic news for both of them. So I’m thrilled.”
[From Sky News]
Aw. I believe him when he talks about wanting to get married and have kids. I kind of think that’s one of the reasons why he’s leaving military service: he wants to focus more on having a personal life and finding a wife. Poor Harry. I hope he finds a nice bride soon!

Pop superstar Beyoncé shared a cute snapshot via Instagram on Mother’s Day.
“Sending love to Mothers around the world,” she captioned the precious family photo. In the pic, the Bootylicious singer is seen posing with her mother Tina Knowles as a child. And in the the split image, Beyoncé and her 3-year-old daughter Blue are seen together.
Beyoncé and and her pretty preschooler were photographed just last month at Grandma Tina’s wedding to Richard Lawson. The pair exchanged vows on a yacht in Orange County, Calif.
In case you missed it, check out the fun family photos from Tina and Richard’s wedding here.

Victoria Beckham penned an op/ed for Time magazine in honor of Mother’s Day. Oher columnists for the occasion included Ivana Trump, Sharon Osbourne, Sally Jewell, and Tina Knowles. Posh’s essay has to do with teaching her children about their own “privilege.” She wants them to know “humility” and not grow up to be spoiled brats. I like Posh a lot. She’s very self-deprecating and has a wicked sense of humor. I also believe she and David are very good parents to their brood of four. At the same time, I laugh at the thought of Victoria penning an essay on humility. Her very image (during and after the Spice Girls) has been built upon luxury and indulgence. Here’s part of the essay (the full version is here), and we’ll discuss:
Being a mother is simply the greatest achievement of my life. It has taken me on an unexpected journey that can constantly surprise, educate and confuse me! The emotional connection I feel towards my children brings boundless elation and joy as well as the inevitable worry and concern.
They are a wonder to me every day. From a teenage son through to a toddler daughter, each moment of every day is filled with different energies, activities, feelings and a lot of comedy. From playing sport to lounging on the sofa, each of my children fill every second with laughter, music and discussion. They are kind hearted and well-mannered and have incredibly enquiring minds, and I feel incredibly blessed to be surrounded by these phenomenal human beings.
Being in a position where they live such a privileged life, it is important that our children understand humility, that they appreciate how their parents have worked very hard to create this life for the family and that they, too, have a responsibility to work hard, be respectful and never, ever take anything for granted.
Like so many working mothers all over the world, I feel the constant struggle to be the best mother I can, whilst setting a good example to my children to work hard. I travel for work when it’s necessary, and I miss them all the time when I am away. But they hide notes in my suitcase, which I love to find when unpacking, and I always bring photographs of all the family and put them by my bed so they are the first thing I see when I wake up and the last thing I see when I go to sleep. I love to hear their voices on the phone and seeing their faces–thank goodness for FaceTime. That sense of feeling connected makes being apart that little bit easier.
[From Time]
Vic goes on to say that women should support women, and mothers should acknowledge the hard work of other mothers. What she has to say in this essay is indeed admirable, yet I have no doubt that Posh used a ghostessayist to put her thoughts into a digestible format. I think her message is a good one, but it doesn’t jibe with Posh reality. Perhaps she and David do try and instill humility within their own kids, but Victoria is still quite spoilt.
Page Six just published an account of how Victoria’s known as “the worst hotel guest“ in the industry. She reportedly asks staff to clean her room, replace sheets, change towels, and vacuum multiple times per day. She’ll complain and demand a free room if her requirements aren’t satisfied. Presumably, Vic’s children see this happen. The Mail reminds its readers that Posh employs at least 10 full-time servants at all times. None of this is surprising from a woman who sat on a throne and wore a coronet at her own wedding. I’m not trashing Victoria if all this stuff is true. But it does makes her look silly to pen an essay on “humility” for Mother’s Day.

Ahead of the television upfronts, which start this week, networks have announced more renewal and cancelation decisions. [From E! Online]
Many people commenting on E! are worried about Blue Bloods being canceled, but it will most likely be renewed from what I’ve read. The Odd Couple doesn’t deserve a second season, in my opinion, but the ratings are there and experts say that it’s also likely to be renewed.
Nashville is one of my guilty pleasures and despite some of the dumb plotlines this season (they really screwed up poor Hayden Panettiere’s character) I’m relieved that it’s coming back in the fall. It sounded like touch and go for that show at one point, due to how expensive it is to make. American Crime is another excellent series, although it’s dark and can be depressing at times.
As for shows I watch which have been canceled, I’m sad about Forever and I don’t think it had enough of a chance to build viewership. Resurrection was on my DVR but I grew to dislike it and am glad they pulled the plug. (Incidentally, I tried to watch the other show with the same premise as the original French series, A&E’s The Returned, and I couldn’t get into it.) I can’t believe The Last Man on Earth is coming back to Fox. That show was painfully unfunny. It’s all about the ratings and some shows get so much hype that they stick around past their expiration date.
After I wrote this story, Fox announced its new lineup. You can read more here. American Idol will run for just one more season, which will be its last. The best news is that The X Files are coming back in January! I can’t wait.
Here’s hoping we see Mindy Kaling and Ioan Gruffudd in new projects again soon.

I’m enjoying the fact that Princess Charlene and Prince Albert of Monaco are really giving us some great photo-ops with their babies. Charlene gave birth to twins Gabriella and Jacques on December 10th, 2014. Soon after the birth, Charlene and Albert did a nice at-home photoshoot with Hello Magazine and Paris Match, and then in January, they did the big baby presentation to the people of Monaco.
Now Gabriella and Jacques are all of six months old and to celebrate their six months’ birthday, they got baptized in a big, splashy event in Monaco. Much of the royal family came out to celebrate. Even Princess Caroline looked happy. Jacques and Gabriella seem to be developing and eating very well, although it’s worth noting that these are two of the baldest babies I’ve ever seen in my life. Maybe they’re just super blonde and they only look bald in photos? No, I’m really looking… these babies are pretty bald. I’m pretty sure Albert is holding Jacques and Charlene is holding Gabriella. Jacques is The One. So grumpy.
Charlene wore ivory Dior for the event, with matching gloves and a pillbox hat. She actually looked radiant. I hope she’s happy. She seems to be, quite genuinely. I think motherhood suits her and now that she’s got her babies, her marriage drama seems to have taken a backseat. Oh, and the babies wore Dior gowns too!

SPOILERS for Game of Thrones episode “Kill the Boy.”
I didn’t come away from this week’s Game of Thrones episode as excited as last week. I blame the Greyjoys! Even though Theon is no longer “iron-born,” he’s still enough to ruin an episode for me. Every time I hear about the character kill rate on GoT, I always think hopefully, “…and Theon?!” It’s crazy to me that somehow Theon has survived (maimed but survived) and Tywin Lannister has not. Anyway, bring some HODOR to the table and let’s discuss this week’s episode. Some assorted highlights:
Jon Snow & The Wall: This is where we get the episode’s title, “Kill the Boy.” It’s said to Jon Snow by Maester Aemon Targaryen. I loved the part where Sam read out a message to Maester Aemon about Dany’s bad situation in Meereen and Aemon – one of the last surviving Targaryens and (I think?) Dany’s great-uncle, seems to wish he could be in Meereen to advise her. I also think his wording about “a Targaryen alone in the world” was interesting, especially since Jon Snow (dun dun dun) came in right afterwards. Anyway, I wasn’t crazy about the whole Jon Snow storyline here – he’s going to go make a speech to the Free Folk about how they’ll have to fight with the Night’s Watch when winter comes. Blah.
Brienne & Her Oath. We could have used more Brienne, honestly. We only got a glimpse of her as she was setting up a fail-safe rescue plan for Sansa, should she need it. Sansa is somehow supposed to make it to the tower (the same tower that Jamie Lannister pushed Bran off of in the very first episode of the series) and light a candle. Girl, when trouble comes for Sansa, she’s not going to have time to light a candle!
Sansa and Winterfell. I think it’s a good instinct for Sansa to just stay in her room and not interact with the Boltons. When Sansa is manipulated into seeing Theon/Reek in his dog’s kennel or whatever… ugh. And Ramsey Bolton’s displays of…creepy psycho chivalry? At dinner, when he was trying to do something to make Sansa cry, I guess. I almost wish Roose Bolton would just kill Ramsey and marry Sansa himself. Roose is a terrible person, but he’s not bats—t crazy like Ramsey. Alfie Allen has a new interview with Variety about playing Theon/Reek – go here to read.
Dany & the Dragons. Dany needs to learn to solve more of her problems with her dragons. She needs to bring them out and let them eat people in broad daylight (although the catacombs-set where she keeps them is really cool). So, she feeds one of the masters to the dragons. I would have loved it if her next move was to order Daario to find more of the Sons of the Harpy and then let the dragons eat all of the prisoners. In the fighting pits. But basically, Dany needs people. She needs advisors, because Daario and Missandei won’t cut it, long-term. And Dany’s silly scheme of marrying dude-face head of his family? Ugh.
Grey Worm Lives! Yay. And the only thing he feared was that he would never get to see his beloved Missandei. I kind of love their little love story.
Jorah & Tyrion. I was sort of disappointed that they were still on a boat, but I got excited when I realized that we were getting our first glimpse at Valyria. The story of “The Doom of Valyria” borrows heavily from the myth/theory of the lost city of Atlantis. The Valyrian people – the ancestral home of the Targaryns – were the most advanced, the most technological, the smartest, the most civilized. They tamed dragons and conquered the world. Then The Doom came upon them – you can read more about that here. So, Jorah wants to move through the ruins of Valyria, perhaps to find some sort of gift for Dany. Tyrion sees a dragon (Drogon!) for the very first time and props to Peter Dinklage for looking properly awed. But Drogon pulled focus from the real threat: the Stone Men, aka men with Greyscale, a terrible disease in the GoT universe. You can be infected with Greyscale just by touch, and long story short… Jorah has Greyscale now. Iain Glen spoke to Entertainment Weekly about the turn of events – go here to read.
Next week: Cersei goes HAM on Littlefinger. I can’t wait for her whole game with the Sparrows to blow up in her face.
