On set “Ridiculous six”

On Friday, we talked about how Native American actors walked off the set of Adam Sandler’s new film, Ridiculous Six. Netflix was dumb enough to pick this movie up after several studios said no (and for good reason). The Native characters were stereotypically drawn and given ridiculous names like “Smoking Fox” and “No Bra,” and the whole movie seemed like an unending trickle of racist jokes against Native women and elders.
There are a few updates. Defamer published parts of the script, and the excerpts are worse than one can imagine. Lots of names like “Sits on Face,” “Raspberry T*ts,” and “Flaming Wolf,” who speaks in broken English. A character jokes about putting the “peepee” in someone’s “teepee.” Netflix originally defended the movie as a “broad satire” in which all characters are in on the joke. The film’s Native American actors obviously disagreed.
Adam Sandler hasn’t said anything about this movie yet. But the movie does have one defender from its cast. Vanilla Ice, who plays Mark Freaking Twain, seems to think that he’s the definitive source on this movie’s offensiveness because he’s part Choctaw. He spoke with TMZ and dropped the following nonsense:
“I don’t think anybody really had any ill feeling or any intent or anything. This movie isn’t Dances With Wolves. It’s a comedy. They’re not there to showcase anything about anybody — they’re just making a funny movie, I think. I don’t have anything to do with it. I just play my part.”

So Ice thinks this movie is perfectly cool because it’s only making jokes. This isn’t supposed to be a documentary, you guys. It’s a comedy. Lighten up and play that funky music. Because (as AV Club points out) Vanilla Ice would never participate in the appropriation of anyone’s culture … except when it comes to his own rap career.
Oh, and guess who else stars in Ridiculous Six? Terry Crews! (Dude, I expected so much better from you.)

Kate Upton has a new interview in the Evening Standard paper. I decided to use mostly candid street photos to illustrate this story because (as Kaiser reminded us yesterday) Kate needs to up her style game at scheduled events. She looks fantastic in swimsuits and fashion editorials, but she needs a new stylist for parties and fashion festivals. Someone keeps handing her the fug outfits. But her street style isn’t the worst.
This interview has a few interesting bits and pieces. Kate’s ongoing career has been the subject of much media speculation. Kate herself seems a little weary of the talk. I appreciated how she called out Uncle Terry for releasing her “Cat Daddy” video, but I don’t know why she rails so much against social media when it helped her rise to supermodel status. Kate talks again about how she’d love to blow up her social media accounts. One cute part is when she messes with the journo about her favorite body part:
Her favorite feature: “I’d say my best feature is my … my ears. They’re always just hanging there, chilling; they never make me feel insecure. I’m just kidding. I think I’d probably say my smile because it makes me feel good inside when I’m smiling.”
More social media disdain: “Oh my gosh. All … the … time. I fantasise about deleting my social media accounts. But I can’t.”
On helping girls with their body image: “For me it’s about being strong, having the strength to work ten-hour days, and eating healthily,” she says. On a good day she has a breakfast of scrambled eggs (one white, one whole) with spinach and green tea at 7am; a snack of ten raw almonds and a green juice at 10am; a lunch of quinoa with herb-crusted grilled chicken and grilled vegetables; a protein bar at 4pm; and dinner at 7pm — usually sashimi or a kale salad with grilled salmon and cashews. Sounds utterly joyless, I say. She allows herself the occasional cheat day: “I like fried salty food rather than sweet.” But before a big shoot or film scene she will undertake a 48-hour juice cleanse.
Is she ever body shy? “I always am! Well, I am and I’m not at the same time. Every person has insecurities. But this is the body I was given, I appreciate it and I try to take care of it every day as best I can, but I always enjoy my life. So I’m not going to let my insecurities stop me from enjoying life.”
[From Evening Standard]
Good god, why only 10 almonds? There are around 23 in one serving, which I shouldn’t know in the first place. This just goes to show that so many of us are all too aware of nutritional labels, but c’mon. It’s not just about calorie count. Almonds have plenty of protein, potassium, and magnesium. Maybe I just like almonds.
Kate did seem to have a healthy attitude about her body in the face of unhinged, pro-ana criticisms. Kate spoke out against that body shaming when it happened, but the wave of criticism probably stuck with her. That sucks. When she talks about 2-day juice cleanses in this interview, I thought about how she admitted to 2-week cleanses before her SI: Swim shoots. Either her story has changed, or she’s lightened up on her pre-shoot food restrictions. I hope it’s the latter. Oh, and not every single person has body insecurities.

At this point, I think Aaron Taylor-Johnson might be the least controversial Avenger. The Age of Ultron promotional tour has not been going too well, so maybe they should just put Aaron and… Scarlett?… front and center. Send Robert Downey Jr., Jeremy Renner and Chris Evans home. Chris Hemsworth has – oddly enough – not been making any negative headlines either, but I suspect that’s because A) no one gives a crap about Hemsworth/Thor and B) Hemsworth and Marvel are still fighting about how much he actually has to promote these films after he was The Largely Absent Hemsworth the last go-round. Anyway, I would be fine with seeing more of Aaron Taylor-Johnson. He’s not “managed” to a crazy degree, but he’s also not a bad kid. He’s got a nice interview with The Guardian – go here to read. Some highlights:
His new beard: “I got into beards right in the middle of the hipster boom. But that’s not why I’m doing this.”
Being told he resembles a fashionable Hasidic Jew. “That was nice because I have really curly hair and also I’m Jewish.”
He wants to do more dramas: “Those scripts, those sorts of films, they’re gems that come around every so often and when they do, yeah, of course, I’d love to do them. People look at stuff like Godzilla and Avengers and think I only do blockbusters, or however you wanna put it, but in reality I can make double or triple what I got paid for Avengers by doing other stuff – there are other options but I don’t want to work with this person or that person and so I don’t do it. There are other ways to make more money. [Plus,] I know when I’ve missed too many school runs. We’re lucky that we have the financial luxury not to have to be working all the time.”
How much he got paid for Ultron: “I can’t really discuss that. Let’s just say I got paid very nicely. The money didn’t have a major effect on me. It was really down to spending time speaking to Joss [Whedon, the writer-director] and talking it over. It’s much more important to me to consider what I could do in the film and who I’m working with.”
Changing his name when he married Sam: “It was so important to me. Actually I wanted it on Savages as well but they told me the posters had already gone out. Then they said: ‘Look, we hired Aaron Johnson.’” He shrugs. When the same thing almost happened on Anna Karenina, he dug his heels in. “I said: ‘I want it changed! This is important.’” But how did it actually feel? “It felt beautiful,” he sighs. “It felt right.”
[From The Guardian]
I love that about changing his name – I wish more men felt that way about changing their names when they get married. Sam Taylor Johnson used to be Sam Taylor Wood – that was her married name from her first marriage, and she used it professionally too. So when Sam married Aaron Johnson, they became the Taylor Johnsons. And it does feel right. You know what I’ve always hoped? I know Angelina Jolie goes by Angelina Jolie-Pitt now, but I’ve always hoped that Brad goes by Jolie-Pitt too. That would be amazing.

I love Queen Latifah but I hate when magazines pose a woman on a magazine cover with her mouth in some sort of weird, uncomfortable open-mouthed smile. Look at her! She’s not laughing, she’s actually posing like that. What a terrible thing to do to our queen. Anyway, Queen Latifah covers Uptown – probably because she’s promoting her HBO movie, Bessie – and she ends up talking around her sexuality but coming out for marriage equality and LGBTQ tolerance. Some highlights:
She supports marriage equality: “People’s ideas in general are antiquated when it comes to who you love. We haven’t moved as quickly as we probably should. And the reality is that there’s always been gay people in the black community, so it’s not foreign to us. And not just as a black community but just a society as a whole…Who you choose to marry is really up to you and it’s not something you should be judged on. I don’t find being gay or lesbian to be a character flaw. Couples should be protected under the laws of this country period. It actually angers me.”
Her thoughts on Bill Cosby: “It’s unfortunate because he has done so much in terms of entertainment, culture and black folks. But right is right and wrong is wrong. All these women, all these stories, it’s just—what a big stain on such an amazing career.”
The cancelation of her talk show: “Obviously it was disappointing but I don’t look at these things as catastrophic failures. We have a lot going on in our company alone, so I’m not worried about my next job opportunity.”
[From E! News]
I like she specifically calls out the African-American community when it comes to LGBTQ acceptance. For what it’s worth, it has gotten a lot better overall, across races, in the past few years. I’m saying that as someone who remembers the 2004 election and the GOP strategy of getting black preachers agitated about gay marriage to the exclusion of everything else. I don’t think that could happen again, and I’m happy about that. As for Latifah’s sexuality…we knew she was gay when she brought girlfriend Jeannette Jenkins on a yacht vacation in 2010! Just FYI: I think Jeannette and Latifah called it quits in 2011, and Latifah is with a woman named Eboni now.
As for the Bill Cosby stuff… I think it’s difficult for a certain generation of black entertainers to discuss the Cosby stuff, because Cosby was truly an idol to so many of them. Yes, all of the rape is a “big stain” and I wish she had used strongly language about it, but hey… at least she didn’t defend him.

Here are some photos of Anne Hathaway in New York from the past five days or so. She and her husband Adam “Skinny Jeans” Shulman have been in New York for a few weeks as Anne was rehearsing and then starting her one-woman show Grounded, showing at The Public Theater through May. You can read the review of the show here – Annie’s playing a drone pilot dealing with PTSD and her performance is getting solid-to-great reviews.
So that answered my questions as to why we’ve been getting so many photos of Adam and Annie lately. They’ve been all over the place, getting pap’d nearly every day in NYC. This hasn’t really happened since Annie went overboard with her Oscar campaign and got WAY too in our faces with photo-ops, interviews, etc. I think she learned a lot from that moment, and she’s veered too far to the other side, where she’s barely speaking to the press at this point. Has she even done any press on behalf of this show?
Here’s something I didn’t know before today – Annie’s on Instagram. She uses it sparingly and mostly for work, charity and maybe to push her jewelry-designing-husband’s wares. But she did post this endorsement of Hillary Clinton a few weeks ago. Annie’s a big Democratic Party supporter, and she’s given and raised money for Pres. Obama’s campaigns in the past. I guess she’s backing Hillary this time around.
I was just thinking this morning that it’s going to be especially important to vote in the 2016 election: whoever we elect will likely name three Supreme Court Justices during their term. THREE. It’s a huge responsibility- I like the idea of Hillary making those calls #hillary #supremecourt #weholdthesetruthstobeselfevident

Saved by the Bell alum Mark-Paul Gosselaar and wife Catriona McGinn attended Safe Kids Day in West Hollywood, Calif. on Sunday (April 26). The handsome couple were all smiles with son Dekker, 18 months, at the afternoon event.
The actor, 41, and his wife welcomed their second child – daughter Lachlyn Hope – on Feb. 17.
“That’s probably the biggest hurdle,” the proud papa admitted to E! News at the WeHo event. “The lack of sleep. I’m not gonna lie, it’s a lot of work.”
The actor first introduced his daughter via Instagram in Feb.
“She’s a ‘mouth-breather’ like her Daddy. My sweet little angel,” Gosselaar captioned the sweet shot.
MPG is also dad to son Michael Charles, 10, and daughter Ava Lorenn, 8, from his previous marriage.

Congratulations to Max Greenfield and Tess Sanchez.
The New Girl actor, 34, and his casting director wife are expecting their second child, Us Weekly reports.
The Ugly Betty alum and his wife of nearly seven years are already parents to 5-year-old daughter Lilly.
“We went to Disneyland for the first time. She went crazy,” said Greenfield recently of his growing girl. “What’s fun to see now is she’s really becoming independent, starting the phases of ‘Hey, I’m good dad, leave me alone, I can do this by myself.’ It’s like ‘OK I guess this is happening. I’ll see you when you’re 26.’”
Greenfield’s New Girl costar Zooey Deschanel is also pregnant, due to give birth to her first child with fiancé Jacob Pechenik later this year.
“It was exciting!” Greenfield said of Deschanel’s news. “We all found out at the same time on set and it was just like, ‘Oh my God!’”
