Dr. Oz

The embattled Dr. Mehmet Oz continues his struggle against all medical odds. Yeah, he’s a real doctor, a surgeon who performs real surgery on real people (sometimes inviting a Reiki master to assist). He may not be a practicing surgeon for too long, although his show will go on. Late last week, I talked about how several of Oz’s Columbia University colleagues called for his resignation from the surgery department. Oz refused. He told his tv audience that these 10 doctors were attacking his “freedom of speech,” and he vowed, “we will not be silenced.” Oz insisted that the “miracle cures” he touts were making America a better place. Never mind that he shills products that are supported by bogus studies, or even that the U.S. Senate called him out for his lack of accountability.

A new poll from the SERMO social network of doctors reveals that many physicians would like Dr. Oz to stop embarrassing the profession. Over 1,500 out of 2,029 doctors polled want Oz to resign from Columbia and (in most cases) have his medical license revoked. I expect that number to grow. Oh, and John Oliver ripped Oz’s freedom of speech defense:

“No. You are scientifically wrong about that as you are about so many things. Let’s be clear: The First Amendment protects Americans against government censorship, and that’s it. It does not guarantee you to simultaneously hold a faculty position at a prestigious private university and make misleading claims on a TV show. It absolutely protects you to say whatever you like on it, just as it protects my right to say what I think about you on mine, which is this: You are the worst person in scrubs who has ever been on television–and I’m including Katherine Heigl in that. Do you have any idea how difficult it is to be worse than Katherine Heigl? You are also the admittedly handsome ringmaster of a middling mid-afternoon snake-oil dispensary and it says something that even when you do a show with seven fake models of human feces, the biggest piece of sh*t on the stage has his name in the title … Isn’t freedom of speech great?”

[YouTube]

Preach it, Oliver. Although … poor Katherine Heigl. She’s simply an ungrateful actress on a major downswing. She never asked to be compared to snake-oil salesman dressed as a frantic cheerleader in scrubs. In all seriousness, Oliver is completely correct, just as when he called Oz out a year ago for his scammy approach to product endorsement.

Oz isn’t completely without support. David Lynch weighed in on the Oz problem from his Twitter account. Who asked David Lynch? No one, but he’s really into alternative medicine and has a foundation that advocates the use of transcendental meditation for medical purposes. Lynch tweeted his Oz support.

Dear Twitter Friends, in my opinion @DrOz is a great person and a great doctor and I support him 100%.

Lynch’s tweet was met with this amazing followup.

Hey David, you can delete tweets you know.

Jessica Alba covers the new issue of More Magazine. It’s a meh editorial, but I’m not expecting Vogue-quality content from More Mag (no shade). Alba is promoting her “billion dollar company,” The Honest Company, which produced eco-friendly products. I have my doubts as to whether The Honest Company is really and truly valued at a $1 billion, but Alba has built herself a lucrative business and obviously, there’s a big market for what she’s selling.

What I found interesting about this interview was Alba’s discussion about crying at work. “Crying at work” is a thing and people have strong opinions about it. Some women believe that “crying at work” is the most unprofessional thing you could ever do, that it is weak and your colleagues and superiors will underestimate you if you ever shed a tear. Some women believe that “crying at work” is just part of life and tears don’t have anything to do with one’s professionalism. What fascinates me about this Alba interview is that she’s talking about being a boss and MAKING an employee cry and not giving a sh-t. I can’t tell if this is a boss move or if she’s a terrible person.

Alba on making someone cry: “I’m straight to the point. I’ve made people cry. I have to say, ‘This isn’t personal. This is what needs to get done, and it’s just as simple as that. And … we’re not crying anymore.’ ”

Working with men: “My [business] partners are men. Whenever I say something that’s kind of against their intuition, they go back and talk to their wives. And then their wives usually agree with me. So that’s how we get stuff done over here.”

Building her business: “I didn’t want to wake up and kick myself for not pursuing something I believed in. I couldn’t wait to reject the status quo, punch it in the face and kick it to the curb.”

The Honest Company’s office features a “floor-to-ceiling display of succulents sprouting from sweet little pots”: “Sometimes my CFO gets irritated about it. Someone has to come every week to water and put them in the sun for a day, and that costs money. We needed something alive. We couldn’t just have pretty pictures. And so when he’s like, ‘Do we really need the live succulents?’ I say, ‘Yes, yes, we do.’”

The company’s $1 billion valuation: “When you look at the marketplace that we’re playing in, it’s trillions of dollars. Window cleaner alone is a billion-dollar business, just to give a bit of perspective, because people get so freaked out by our valuation. Also, it doesn’t feel tangible yet, because I’m still hustling.”

[From More Magazine & People]

I’m actually impressed with this side of Alba, especially considering I think very little of her acting talent. This is probably her calling, not acting. She has a head for business, and I hope she sticks with it. As for making her employees cry… if she was a dude, she wouldn’t even register the fact that she was making someone cry, you know? But it does feel like she’s taking pride in it a little bit. If Alba told you that your work was crap and you needed to do something else, would you cry at work?

Tom Hardy “stars” in a new PETA ad with his beautiful dog Woodstock. I have mixed feelings about PETA and any celebrity working with PETA, but I’ll give Tom this: he LOVES animals. He especially loves dogs. He’s just one of those people. I think Tom Hardy is happiest when he’s on the ground with a dog, being licked and nuzzled and loved. And the feeling is mutual: animals seems to gravitate to him. Not to brag, but I’m one of those people too – animals always come to me (maybe it’s because I smell like bacon).

The PETA ad comes from a candid paparazzi shot, which makes me wonder if PETA even got Tom’s endorsement. The photos were taken last year, July 2014, when Tom was filming Legend in England. As he often does, Tom brought Woodstock to work with him and every now and then, Tom would stop and talk to bystanders and pose for photos with their dogs, or pose for photos with Woodstock. I’m including some of the Woodstock photos below. Woodstock and Tom have some kind of grand love affair, really.

The point of this PETA campaign is adoption, which is great. Tom adopted/rescued Woodstock in Atlanta back in 2011, when Tom was working on Lawless. Apparently, Woodstock was running loose on the highway and Tom rescued him. Now Woody is Tom’s road dog, coming with him on film sets and Tom’s London home. He also adopted a Pit Bull when he was working on The Drop.

Sigh… Tommy and dogs. I wish Tom would let me nuzzle him.

I have a Nick Jonas problem, you guys. I have a crush on him. I never thought I would say that – I’m RARELY into the younger guys, especially when it comes to the Disney children-turned-bad-boys. I couldn’t care less about those guys. But Nick Jonas? “Jealous” is a great pop song. So is “Chains”. And Nick is legitimately cute-to-hot. He’s not, like, Michael Fassbender-hot or Tom Hardy-hot, where my mind wanders to dirty thoughts almost immediately, but Nick definitely gives me some feelings. Anyway, Nick has a new interview in the May issue of Elle. It’s a surprisingly great read – go here to read the whole thing. Nick talks openly about sex, losing his V, purity rings and his faith. Some highlights:

The South Park episode about purity rings: “There was so much attention on my sex life at 15. It was uncomfortable. If you were talking about a 15-year-old’s sex life or a 17-year-old’s in any other context it would be totally obscene. I wasn’t able to enjoy [the episode] when it came out. But now I think it’s hilarious.”

How he feels about purity rings now: “It shaped my view of the importance of sex. My journey with faith evolved and became more about my personal relationship with God. It was about me being comfortable with my decisions. As a 22-year-old man, I’m a man in all ways, and I’m comfortable with that. It’s freeing now to be transparent.”

What he would change about his first time: “That’s a tough one. I think I would change the song. I don’t want to say what song it was, but it was depressing. My iPod was on shuffle. It was a bad draw.”

Whether he’s had sex to his own music: “No. Never. That’s a no-fly zone! It’s so awkward. I’ve never even tried. I do think about how many people have had sex to my music. And how many babies have been made to “Jealous.” It’s got a good tempo for sex. They should be naming their babies Nick or Nicole. I’m joking.”

His Miss Universe girlfriend, Olivia Culpo: “She’s just Olivia from Rhode Island. She had this incredible opportunity and she conquered that world. But [beauty pageants] doesn’t define her. Vanity is a big misconception, or that they’re not as intelligent as some people. But a lot of them are very sweet— with a real love and respect for women and for empowering women.”

Dating Miley Cyrus back in the day: “I was so young. What’s unfortunate is that, as we got older, we ran in different circles. We’ve always had respect and wished the best for each other. I don’t know that I have any regrets. It’s more gratitude for having had a good friend in a time of craziness in my life and in hers.”

Advice from his mom: “I have a distinct memory where she looked at my nails and said, ‘Women love a man with clean nails.’ I was eight. I thought, I can do that. Good to know.”

[From Elle]

I’m totally fine with the way he references his sex life and my feeling is that he’s probably a serial monogamist. He loves having a girlfriend (and his girlfriend is beautiful) and he loves being in a steady relationship and that’s what makes him happy. He’s not out there, acting like DiCaprio Junior. The only parsing I have here is with this: “As a 22-year-old man, I’m a man in all ways…” Meaning what? He’s a “man” in that he’s had sex? That’s how I took it.

Oh, and I really want to know what song was playing when he lost his V. What’s a depressing song that could have been playing on his Shuffle a few years ago?

Macbeth is not my favorite Shakespeare play. My favorite is Othello. I consider Hamlet to be the most overrated (although I acknowledge it’s a great part for actors). So, while Macbeth isn’t my favorite, I don’t hate it either. There are some wonderful scenes and the potential for some really great performances. I was happy when Michael Fassbender signed on to play Macbeth – I genuinely believe he’ll do great work in the role. But I was worried about Lady Macbeth. At first, Natalie Portman was going to play Lady M. Which would have been a nightmare. At the end of the day, Marion Cotillard was cast and they’re explaining her French accent as “she’s a lady who spent a great deal of time in the French court, as many high-born ladies did at the time.” Sure. I guess I’ll buy that.

Anyway, it’s come time to actually show this film adaptation to the world. In a few weeks, Macbeth will premiere in competition at the Cannes Film Festival. Good news: Marion Cotillard and Michael Fassbender will walk the red carpet. Bad news: The film still doesn’t have an American release date. But Harvey Weinstein is backing the film so hey, maybe it will be an awards contender and it will be released this fall?

In any case, ahead of Cannes, they’re releasing more production stills and such. We’re getting a better look at Fassy’s Macbeth. And while his Macbeth is still really, REALLY hot, he’s also dirty. Dirty in a bad way. Dirty in a “why is he so grimy?” way. Even though Macbeth is a warrior, he’s also a well-born lord, right? He has servants and they could bring him a bowl of water to wash his hands, right? Out, out damn… dirt.

So, are you into this? I want to see it (Fassy!!!), but only if critics say Marion is okay-to-great at Lady M.

Exclusive... Jennifer Garner Takes Her Son To Breakfast

Absolutely adorable!

Danny Collins star Jennifer Garner was spotted with 3-year-old son Samuel in Santa Monica, Calif. on Tuesday (April 28). Dressed like Peter Pan (with a paper sword to boot!), the precious preschooler dined out for breakfast with his famous mama.

On Sunday, Jen stepped out with Samuel and her youngest daughter – 6-year-old Seraphina – at their local farmers’ market.

Also mom to 9-year-old daughter Violet with husband Ben Affleck, the actress is happy to get back to work on two new films: The Tribes of Palos Verdes and Nine Lives.

“I’ve been home for a long time,” Jennifer recently dished. “It’s my turn and I’m going to go to work this spring. I think I’ll work the spring and summer, maybe the fall too, as long as some of it’s at home. I don’t think my deals are done yet so I can’t say, but yeah, I’m about to go to work.”
