For years now, NBC News has been trying to hire Pippa Middleton to be some kind of “royal correspondent” for all things Middleton-Windsor. Pippa turned them down for a few years, but then she did a few appearances on the Today Show last year, and the rumors began anew. It was said that NBC News was going to offer her something in the mid-six figures for a handful of royal-themed appearances a year. Then Brian Williams happened, and NBC News began going through a major transition, and they are less willing to simply throw money away on a duchess’s orange sister.
Pippa Middleton’s much-discussed audition for “Today” hasn’t resulted in a deal for the British royal sister with the NBC show. Network sources said a test segment filmed by the Duchess of Cambridge’s 31-year-old sister last November at a hoedown in Jackson Hole, Wyo., didn’t convince “Today” producers to immediately sign her up.
An NBC source said: “NBC executives very much like Pippa, but they want to find the role most appropriate for her. The last thing NBC News needs right now is another Chelsea Clinton, a correspondent with a large salary, high profile and no particular purpose. Plus, the NBC News division has undergone so much turmoil recently, all talent decisions are being carefully made. Talks are still ongoing with Pippa’s team, but they have recently slowed down.”
The source added: “Both parties have stayed in touch, but there is nothing to announce right now.”

Chelsea Clinton still technically works for NBC News? Huh. I know Jenna Bush-Hager does too, although I think Jenna does a little bit more for her salary (she’s given interviews about her baby, and done First Lady-friendly segments). As for Pippa… well, she’s the only one of the Middleton siblings bringing IN any money. James Middleton’s businesses keep failing and Kate has cost her family a lot of money in trying to land William… although William sort of made up for it by giving Carole and Michael the money to buy a bigger home. In Pippa’s first year of incorporation, she brought in something like $350,000 and that was just from her #PippaTips-type “journalism” career. She’ll be fine if NBC News doesn’t want her, although she probably really, really wants that paycheck.

Kate Winslet covers the new issue of InStyle, likely to promote her role in Insurgent, the sequel to Divergent. Winslet famously took the role as a sort of throw-away, easy money for a few weeks of filming and barely any promotional work. Winslet didn’t even show up to last week’s premiere, that’s how little she cares! But she did do this InStyle interview, because… why not? This probably fulfilled the bulk of her promotional work. Some highlights from the cover story:
Her last pregnancy: “I filmed A Little Chaos during my first trimester. I literally had sick bags hidden under my skirts … I had boobs like a shelf — it was bonkers. I go soft and doughy quite quickly when I’m pregnant.”
Ned RockNRoll as a father: “Ned is really the most fantastic, hands-on daddy. He’s like a superman … I’m so lucky. I can’t believe how lucky I am actually.”
She still claims she doesn’t Botox: “The wrinkles are here and they’re here to stay now. You know, not just the ones where you wake up in the morning and you go, ‘Oh, that will go away in two hours’ time.’ No, they’re there. That’s the way that it is.”
Body confidence: “I still dip in and out of feeling confident as much as the next person, but I can genuinely say, now more than ever, that I really do love the fact that I’m curvy. I’ve got boobs and a bum and a man who loves me. When you go through the sort of scrutiny that I have, you have to choose a means of dealing with that level of judgment. My way has always been to take a good look at how my career is going. The way I see it, I have an incredibly fulfilling, rewarding career that has nothing to do with the size of my arse.”
[From People Magazine]
I’m all for “I’ve got boobs and a bum”… and that makes ME happy. I side-eye “I’ve got boobs and a bum AND A MAN WHO LOVES ME.” Because the message is still that women are in competition for the precious resource of “men” and perhaps if Kate didn’t have a man, she wouldn’t be so happy with her curves? Am I being too nitpicky? Eh. As long as I’m going there, I really don’t think Kate is “lucky” to have Ned RockNRoll, he’s the one lucky to have her. She’s an Oscar-winning actress and a bombshell. Who is he? Why is he some prize? Because he’s Richard Branson’s nephew? Eh.

She’s gotten so big!
Country crooner Keith Urban was photographed with his two daughters – Sunday, 6, and Faith, 4 – at the Los Angeles International Airport on Friday (March 13). Sporting matching blue and purple dresses, the Urban sisters looked every bit the jet-setters with their famous father.
The American Idol star, 47, was seen driving to departures at LAX, while his bodyguard then drove the car back to the family home.
The Grammy Award-winning singer recently opened up about his happy family life with wife Nicole Kidman.
“I have a lot of people who help me … starting with my wife, who is extraordinary at keeping everything sort of scheduled and balanced,” he shared.
“Someone said one time, ‘If your marriage isn’t your priority, you’re not married,’ and I thought, for me that’s so true. So as long as I keep her as a priority, everything else sort of seems to work. And when I don’t keep it as a priority, it’s … Jenga,” he added.

Here are some photos of Kanye West arriving at LAX on Friday. He flew home a day after Kim Kardashian arrived in LA with North West. Kim picked him up from the airport too. Kanye looks suspiciously happy to see the paps upon his arrival, right? Usually, the paps would have gotten a million photos of a grumpy-looking Kanye trying to hide his face. I wonder what this is about? No idea. One paparazzo did ask Kanye about Pres. Obama’s recent remark that in fact he does not have Kanye’s home number and no, Obama has never called ‘Ye at home. Kanye rejects that presidential noise, y’all. Kanye told TMZ that yes, Obama has called him home. Meanwhile, before Kanye left Paris, he did a rather epic interview with Clique TV. Some highlights:
Kanye on his designs: “I know I’m going to change how difficult it is for people to get dressed…I don’t want to sell anything that I’m not extremely knowledgeable about…I just don’t rush products based off my name. The product has to be something that I can stand behind. The product has to be a contribution to society.”
Expensive mistakes: “When I was young, I was really scared to walk into luxury stores, too. It’s very non-inviting and it’s very expensive. Like, f–k if you’re not knowledgeable you can make a very expensive mistake—an extremely, like, it’s bordering on getting a prostitute pregnant or something like that. An expensive mistake like that when you buy a jacket.”
Racism: “It’s like a bouncing ball in a room of two cats or something. When you don’t feel like playing with the cat, you throw this bouncing ball and let them literally fight over the bouncing ball. And the bouncing ball has nothing, no purpose, other than it bounces. That’s racism.”
Classism: “It’s difficult for black people right now. It does hurt when we hear that [the n-word]. Because we’re still in a generation that remembers when racism was a big thing that held people back. And now it’s more classism, it’s more social, it’s like where your class is and where your financial standing is that can hold you back. Because obviously there are some black people that have broken the concept of race, like Obama or Jay Z. [Racism] is something that was used to hold people back in the past, but now it has been so many leaps and breaking of the rules, that it’s like played out like a style from the 1800s or something.”
Education is everything: “Education is the power. I think in schools, moving forward, beauty needs to be understood…of course we can learn about Picasso but we also need to learn about proportions. Proportions are the luxury…proportions are so important that in ancient times they would hide information of proportion and now it’s happening again. If you picture a Gucci jacket right now—just a guy’s Gucci jacket, it doesn’t have proper proportions in my opinion.”
Is he ever tired of being a celebrity? “Nope, not anymore. I’m very happy to be famous. It’s a tool that you can use to message as you want to take the power into your own hands. As far as my narrative, they can write whatever they want to write…I don’t care about what anyone in fashion has a say about what I want to do. I’m here in fashion to learn sensibility…I want to create something comparable to what Walt Disney did and then mix it with what Henry Ford did and mix it with what Howard Hughes did.”
[From People & E! News]
You can see the video of the interview here. It was conducted by a Frenchman who genuinely seemed to like Kanye, which I think is one of the secrets to getting a good/interesting interview out of Kanye. If you sit down with him and try to understand the root of what he’s saying, he actually doesn’t seem as crazy as some people believe. I mean, is he an egomaniac? For sure. Does he say stupid stuff? Of course. But I do feel like he’s trying… sometimes. Probably because he’s The New Henry Ford/Walt Disney/Steve Jobs/Howard Hughes.

Rihanna can make any item of clothing look like couture. These are photos of Rih looking fierce (last February) at Dior’s Paris fashion week show. In Paris last week, she looked equally fab in a t-shirt and jeans. Clothes never wear Rihanna. I’ve always said Rihanna looks good in anything and nothing at all. She can pose hard or dress down to equal effect. She possesses the rare ability to show how versatile an item of clothing can be. Dior must agree because they signed Rihanna to a major campaign.
Women’s Wear Daily broke the news that Rihanna shot one of the Dior’s “Secret Garden” videos last week in Versailles. She will also appear in a print campaign starting this spring. This is the first time Dior hired a woman of color to front their brand. I can’t believe she’s the first — the house opened in 1946!
Anyway, this is a win for Dior. Rihanna’s already lent her name to Balmain and worked as creative director for Puma, and god knows Dior needs to shake things up. Their designs have suffered since the departure of John Galliano. Y’all know I love Jennifer Lawrence, but Dior puts her in their worst dresses. Rihanna could work that crap and make it fierce. I’m including photos of Rih’s previous Dior ensembles and her Dior-clad February cover shoot for W Korea. You can barely tell she’s wearing Dior in these photos, which … is a good thing. I’m excited to see what will come of this partnership.

When then-Kate Middleton was establishing herself as “the last girlfriend standing” for Prince William (at some point, she had just successfully waited out everyone else), the British press at the time told everyone that Kate had won her prize because she had never put a foot wrong, that she had always known what she wanted and how to get it. She was seen as some as a manipulator, using patience instead of ultimatums and obsequiousness instead of personality. What we know now is that whatever happened during those nine years of courtship, Kate was barely the architect of the romance. Her mother certainly advised Kate (successfully) and helped move many of the pieces into place.
So, as we’re coming up on Will & Kate’s fourth wedding anniversary (and the birth of their second child), how was the long-term planning of Camp Middleton? What has become more and more obvious with each passing year is that Camp Middleton didn’t really plan much beyond “getting the ring.” Kate was a 29-year-old woman-child when she married William, still running home to her mother at the drop of a hat. And after four years, Kate has even grown tired of making the trip to Casa Middleton, so Carole and Michael have pretty much decamped to Anmer Hall so that they can take care of Kate and William for months to come. The Daily Mail has a new, epic breakdown of what’s going down at Anmer. Some highlights:
*Carole does everything: Carole is the one shopping for the new baby’s nursery. She’s making William’s “favourite snack of cheese on toast to eat in front of the television in the evening. And Carole who stocks up on his favourite sea salt chocolates.” Carole is the one “who knows how the flowers should look, which scented candles should be lit and which drinks to serve.”
*William “seems to relish” having Carole & Michael there. One source says Will and Kate “formed ‘an insular unit’ with her parents ‘in which they are quite happy with a quiet life with each other…You could say that Kate and William, unlike most couples with a set of in-laws, feel most at their ease and happiest with her parents around. Tensions dissipate and there’s a party atmosphere.’”
*Three people in a marriage: One source says, “There are three people in that marriage, a result of Kate feeling quite ill at the beginning of this pregnancy and exhausted all the way through. She has relied on Carole. If the Middletons have hijacked the Cambridges, then one can only say that William rather likes it.”
*Carole treats William like a king: “For her, William is still royal and slightly on a pedestal. She’ll gently back his view over Kate’s all the time.”
*Carole gets a say in everything: “Kate and William can be grand, of course, but they love it when Carole brings them cheese on toast or perhaps something less calorific for Kate in front of Downton Abbey. She helps with every decision, from what tie William should wear to an engagement to what curtains the new nursery at Anmer Hall should have. Kate is a perfectionist but is too tired to keep it up while pregnant and trusts her mother’s taste — she learned everything from her.”
*Will & Kate don’t even go out these days: The Mail says, “Apart from the odd royal engagement, they live a very quiet existence, rarely seeing friends or even — as has been noted recently — Prince Charles. Even Zara Phillips, George’s godmother, has not seen them often. Her baby, Mia, hasn’t had playdates with Prince George, as might have been expected.”
*William loves Carole’s attention to detail: “He is in thrall to her capabilities, her tenacity, high-energy levels, her superb organisational skills and her networking. She above anyone else knows what makes Kate happy, what type of staff she will gel with, and understands her overriding need for loyalty and privacy. Carole leaves nothing to chance.”
[From The Daily Mail]
Sources also tell the Mail that Kate is currently splitting her time between London and Anmer Hall, but will permanently relocate to Anmer after she gives birth, and Carole and Michael are going to officially move in with them for several months (at least). This reminds me of something else I’ve heard: that the Queen was somewhat appalled when then-Lady Diana Spencer had no idea what went into running a successful household. It sounds like Kate really doesn’t know how to do it either, but instead of learning from her mother, Kate just outsources everything to Carole indefinitely. Here’s what I sort of love though: I get the feeling that William probably would have been happier if he had just married Carole. Seriously, she’s doing EVERYTHING for him, to make him happy. She even takes his side when he’s fighting with Kate. God, I would be so pissed with my mother if she took anyone’s side but mine.
