Grammy Award-winning singer Shakira and her beau, football star Gerard Piqué, are proud parents to sons Milan, 2, and Sasha, 3 weeks. The A-list couple are using their celebrity platform, as well as the birth of their second child, to do some good.
Teaming up with UNICEF to throw a “World Baby Shower,” the Colombian pop superstar blogs for Baby Center and shares why it was so important for her and Gerard to support those less fortunate.
“As the time of my son’s birth grew closer, I was full of anticipation,” Shakira writes, referring to her first pregnancy with Milan. “Nonetheless, with every gift that was given to my son through the generosity of family or friends, I thought of mothers who couldn’t count on even the most basic resources for their children in those first crucial stages of life, who often don’t have access to vaccines, clean water, or even a proper birthing environment. For these mothers, having a baby, however happy an event, is often a risk to their own health or their newborn’s.”
The singer talks about partnering with UNICEF “to throw a World Baby Shower that asked for gifts to be sent to places where they are not only appreciated, but where they can actually save lives.” She adds that the positive response to their efforts were “overwhelming and emotional.”
“With our second son, we wanted to take it one step further, and invite other parents to host their own showers that help benefit other babies and mothers living in extreme poverty,” she continues. “The feeling of sharing a happy event with others by helping those less fortunate is profoundly rewarding, and made the birth of our own child that much more sweet.”
As for the second time around, Shakira admits she felt much less stress.
“This time around, during my second pregnancy, like many mothers, I felt more confident,” she writes. “The questions that kept me up at night with my first now seem more manageable and I have more perspective about their importance in the bigger picture.”
“What I never want to forget, or stop questioning, is why every child and mother doesn’t enjoy that same sense of security,” she adds. “My hope is that by the time my sons are adults, they can look back and see how even small efforts can have a big impact when multiplied—and that they take the time to tackle the big questions of their time too.”
Shakira has been a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador since 2003. In 2013 she joined forces with UNICEF to host her first World Baby Shower, which raised 3.8 tons of therapeutic food packets and nearly 100,000 polio vaccines for children living in extreme poverty.

In a new blog post titled “Our DIY Oscar Gold Party,” Tori Spelling gets crafty with her four kids – Liam, 7, Stella, 6, Hattie, 3, and Finn, 2 – in celebration of the 87th Annual Academy Awards on Sunday night.
“The girls and I decided to go GOLD or go home when it came time to prepare for our at-home gold soirée Oscar viewing party,” the Beverly Hills, 90210 alum, 41, writes on her blog.
The mom-of-four goes on to describe their party prep before the big awards show.
“We went to Michael’s Craft Store and got some fun, easy and chic things we could paint gold,” she writes. “Wood letters spelling Oscars, paper masks, feathers, and mason jars! We got these cheap plastic $1 store wine cups and spray painted the tips gold for the occasion.”
As for her helpful decorators, it sounds like things got a little messy.
“I think Hattie ended up wearing more of the glitter than the letters!,” Spelling writes.
She adds: “Stella made these star-shaped sugar cookies brushed with gold edible dust.”

Madam Secretary star Téa Leoni covers the March issue of More in a pretty pink Maria Lucia Hohan silk gown. The actress, 48, opens up about misogyny and ageism in Hollywood, choosing not to live in fear, and co-parenting her kids – daughter Madelaine West, 15, and son Kyd Miller, 12 – with ex-husband, Californication star David Duchovny.
On misogyny and ageism in Hollywood: “[Brett] Ratner (her director on the 2000 film The Family Man)—whom I really like, by the way—was going around telling people that despite my age, I was ‘still doable.’ I think I was 34 then. And he was something like 28. I asked myself, ‘Do I still care about that?’ And at that time, I did. I felt that pressure to be ‘doable.’ It was the meanest thought I’d had for myself in a long time…Thankfully, I’ve moved past all that. Chasing youth is a war I’m not going to win. It’s not like I’m thrilled to turn around and catch my can in the mirror, but I can see now how much of my happiness could be a victim of trying to stay young and desirable. And it feels like peace and victory to be relieved of that burden.”
On trying not to be too hard on herself: “Fear is terrible. I’m no different than anyone else. I don’t want people to judge me and find me wanting. I spent some time in my marriage being fearful of how it would go, or end, or not end, and I think, with the kids, some fear as a new mother. I didn’t know what I was doing. I remember packing the freaking diaper bag. I would get obsessed. If there is an earthquake, can we survive for two weeks on the contents?”
On her marital status: “Divorced and liking it, thank you.” But Leoni goes on to say she is friendly with David Duchovny, they speak almost daily and even shared a rental house with their children and extended family over the holidays. “On occasion, I want to throttle him. But in any real relationship with someone you love, that’s true,” she adds.
