Bono is ”an inch away” from being a drug addict.
The U2 frontman goes to church to tame his "wild streak" and stop him giving in to his darker desires.
He said: "I’ve been surrounded a lot in my personal life by addiction – in the last few years, in particular. I know a lot of people – not least the bass player in the band – who have had to deal with their demons in courageous ways."
"And maybe there’s a part of me that thinks, ‘Wow, I’m just an inch away.’"
"There’s no doubt about the fact that I have a wild streak and I’d be very capable of setting fire to myself."
"So, you know, I don’t go to church for the view."
U2’s bass player Adam Clayton battled alcohol problems in the mid 90s and was once so hung-over he couldn’t play a show.
To stay on top of temptation, Bono gets up at 6am – the time he used to get home from partying – to pray and contemplate his life.
The 48-year-old singer
told the Irish Independent newspaper: "My meditative life feeds my soul and it’s a wonderful thing for me to have time to reflect upon things and spend some time to myself."
"I want to squeeze every drop out of the day. But it’s also the tyranny of good ideas, because if you spot one, or if you have one, then you think you have to follow through on it."
"And that might be a psychosis. I may have to get that fixed."

A source said: "Megan wanted great ocean views because she loves the beach and spotting dolphins. And they said they needed several bedrooms and lots of privacy."
Although the couple are back together, Megan wasn’t wearing her engagement ring while viewing properties.
The 22-year-old actress split from Brian, 35, in February amid reports their three-year relationship had "run its course."

The 21-year-old hunk recently admitted his mother Starla is not quite so relaxed about addressing his sex life and was upset when she saw a photograph of him and Vanessa apparently leaving a sex toy shop.
He explained: "My mom is like, ‘Zac, what did you buy in a sex shop?’ I was like, ‘Mom, calm down, it’s not a sex shop.’ She wouldn’t have any of it."
"She’s like, ‘I knew you were being sexual!’ But she understood. My stocking was full of condoms this Christmas. She buys me the economy box."
50 Cent spent the night with Ciara in an exclusive hotel.
The 33-year-old US rapper and 23-year-old singer recently retired to one of the penthouse suites at New York’s AKA Times Square Hotel and Residences on West 44th Street.
A source told the New York Post newspaper: "There was only one bed in that penthouse."
This is not the first time the pair have been romantically linked.
They met while working on Ciara’s track "Can’t Leave ‘Em Alone" and rumors they were dating first emerged when they posed topless together for the music promo in 2007.
Ciara said at the time: "Everybody turns everything into something else."
"They said we have a ranch in Atlanta. I just died laughing. It’s amazing to hear the things people make up. It’s funny."
Last year, 50 rejected claims he had married the singer in a secret ceremony after he was pictured wearing a wedding ring.
A spokesman for the rapper said: "50 Cent is not engaged or married."
Samantha Ronson wants to get a restraining order against Lindsay Lohan.
The DJ sent her mother and sister to a Beverly Hills police station yesterday (April 6, 2009) to obtain a legal injunction to keep her former girlfriend away.
A police spokesman confirmed Samantha’s family had visited the police station, but refused to say if the inquiry was related to Lindsay, adding: "The Ronsons were directed to the court to get a restraining order."
The "Mean Girls" actress and Samantha, 31, ended their troubled relationship last week but Lindsay is reportedly unwilling to move on.
She allegedly tried to crash a party held for Samantha’s sister Charlotte at Bar Marmont in Hollywood on Friday (April 3, 2009) and was furious when she was refused entry.
She then wrote a series of postings on Twitter accusing Samantha of infidelity and drug addiction.
One post said: "You broke my heart. Now go away. I loved you."
Samantha has reportedly vowed she will never take the 22-year-old actress back, changing the locks on her house and promising her family the turbulent relationship is over for good.
A friend said: "Samantha’s family has made her swear that it’s really over. They are giving her all the support they can to keep her away from Lindsay."
"Samantha changed the locks on her house. Lindsay moved her stuff out as much as she could. She’s basically totally out of the house as far as her stuff and she’s not living there anymore. Lindsay was pretty devastated."
Another source added: "Lindsay is going to try and twist the situation in her favor, but Samantha clearly left her, not the other way around."
Lindsay confirmed the split yesterday, saying: "We are taking a brief break so I can focus on myself."
Lindsay’s mother Dina has flown to Los Angeles to help her daughter recover from the break-up.
However, Dina’s attempt to cheer Lindsay up with a shopping trip did not go as planned – the pair were driving to Malibu on Sunday (April 5, 2009) when Dina was stopped by police for speeding, after doing 65mph in a 35mph zone.
A friend said: "Lindsay is beside herself since the split. She has told family and friends she does not want to be left alone, so her mother came out with her for some retail therapy but it ended in disaster."
Lindsay was later seen crying and talking on her cell phone outside a fast food restaurant.
Eva Mendes advises against taking Indian food into the bedroom.
The "Hitch" actress admits eating in bed is one of her worst habits but insists she will never be tempted to take curry under the covers again after a particularly bad experience.
She said: "I have so many guilty pleasures! One of them is to eat in bed while watching television. It sounds kind of gross but I absolutely love it."
"I love to watch my favorite program with my food on a tray on my lap."
"I’ve learned however that eating Indian may not be such a good thing to have in the bedroom. I’ve made that mistake before so never again!"
"But I am a huge snacker so you’ll always find me indulging in something."
Eva, who is the new ambassador for Magnum Temptation ice cream, admits chocolate is one of her favorite foods, but insists she trains hard to ensure she stays in shape when she indulges.
She explained to Australia’s Sydney Morning Herald newspaper: "I love chocolate! I like chocolate like no-one else and I love indulging."
"I work out almost everyday – at least five days a week."
"I put in a lot of time at the gym to ensure that I am able to indulge at other times. Pleasure is pain!"

A source said: "The pair have been doing daily workouts with Gwyneth’s personal trainer Tracy Anderson. Scarlett is also staying away from carbohydrates."
The 24-year-old actress has reportedly decided to slim down amid fears she could lose out on movie roles to younger, more attractive actresses.
A friend told Britain’s Star magazine: "Scarlett has always been happy with her curves, but recently she has been feeling pressure to lose a few pounds."
"She knows that she is up against tough competition from younger, prettier and increasingly skinner actresses."
Scarlett previously insisted she loved her fuller figure and felt no pressure to diet.
She said: "I don’t need to be skinny to be sexy."
ANGELINA JOLIE feels ”happier” than ever.
The actress, who raises six children
with Brad Pitt, loves the way her life has changed since becoming a mother.
Angelina – whose mother Marcheline Bertrand passed away in 2007 – said: "I’m much happier and more fulfilled than I thought I would ever be, especially when I was going through a lot of grief when I was younger. I hope it lasts."
"I think I’m becoming more like my mother and looking more like her too as I get older. I’m also more gentle and nurturing since becoming a mother."
Angelina has never struggled to juggle the demands of her personal and professional life, but says Brad has found it more difficult to adjust.
She added to Britain’s Closer magazine: "I’m very organized. I don’t get stressed and I take everything in my stride. I’ve had to help Brad a bit with that part of our life!"
"The biggest problem is just lack of sleep. But all parents face that – you’re just grateful when the kids fall asleep and you can collapse on the couch together."
Angelina has been dogged by rumors she plans to quit acting and admits she doesn’t see herself making movies forever.
She said: "I’m not as ambitious as I used to be – my family
is my priority. When we get film offer, we ask ourselves, ‘Will it be good for the family?’"
"At some point I want to relax, look after my family and do more humanitarian work."
The case of the People versus Chris Brown continues.
The musician pleaded not guilty in a Los Angeles courtroom Monday to two felony counts – assault and making criminal threats – in the alleged Feb. 8 beating of his girlfriend Rihanna.
Brown, looking solemn, wearing a black sweater, black tie and matching pants, entered the courtroom at 3:30 p.m. followed by his mother, who looked distressed but cracked a smile at a friend in the courtroom.
Asked by Judge Patricia Schnegg for his plea for both charges, Brown answered "not guilty" to each one in a barely audible voice. The judge set the next hearing for April 29.
Brown’s lawyer, Mark Geragos, told the judge that "more discovery was needed" in the case, meaning that he is awaiting review of more evidence. Rihanna was not present nor required to show at the hearing.
Brown allegedly punched, choked, and threatened to kill Rihanna in a fight just hours before their scheduled performance at the Grammys, according to a search warrant affidavit.
If convicted, Brown, 19, faces probation to a maximum four years and eight months in state prison, prosecutors say.
As for Rihanna, her attorney Donald Etra told PEOPLE outside the courtroom, "Nothing’s changed with regard to Rihanna’s stance toward this case … She will testify if subpoenaed and will do everything that’s required of her to do." Currently the singer, is "doing fine," says Etra. "She’s in Barbados now with her family."
I thought it was funny when Carrie told Matthew McConaughey she wanted to see his boots during her EOTY acceptance speech on Sunday, but apparently Carrie felt a little bad about it because she’s apologized for the comment.
Before giving Carrie her award, Matthew told a little story about how George Strait helped him and his brother get lucky. "We’re like, ‘Oh yeah. Say, as I a matter of fact, out in the parking lot, in the trunk of our white Corvette, we have the next year’s new edition white ostrich quill George Strait signed series that he’s gonna wear on tour next year.’ And they got pretty excited about that and said, ‘Well, can we see? Can we see? Can we see?’" McConaughey told the audience. "And we obliged … Point of the story is, we got lucky that night. Thank you, George."
Well after Carrie got her award she teasingly said, "I don’t know what to say. I got nothing’ … I want to see those boots, Matthew." Everyone in the audience laughed, but Carrie obviously embarrassed herself. Backstage she told FoxNews how bad she felt.
"I’m so embarrassed, I totally embarrassed myself. I just blanked," Underwood told Tarts backstage, burying her head in her hands. "You want to say something eloquent in a moment like that and I embarrassed myself. I’m sorry Matthew, I’m sorry to my family. I’m totally embarrassed."
Aww, Carrie, I thought it was cute to see you so flustered and I don’t think anyone thinks worse of you for telling a little dirty joke.
