The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge

It’s been absolute shambles from the House of Keen in the weeks following Prince Harry and Meghan’s Oprah interview. Prince William has done the bulk of the shambolic work, which is why every story is about William’s anger, rage and bad temper. But there have been stories about Duchess Kate too, from her blatant exploitation of a dead woman to being “mortified” that she was outed as a Mean Girl and liar. William continues to act like he’s “protecting” Kate from a scandal entirely of her own making, and as it turns out, Kate supports William completely in his campaign to Keep Kate Infantilized. Shocking.

The Duchess of Cambridge has “been there” for her husband Prince William and “sympathises with his upset and anger” over Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s interview claims, a royal expert has claimed. The Sussexes made a number of claims about the royal family during their sit down with Oprah Winfrey, including several directly about William and Kate. Meghan said that her sister-in-law made her cry in the lead up to the royal wedding in 2018, while Harry claimed his brother was “trapped”.

Vanity Fair’s royal editor Katie Nicholl explains that while Kate was extremely close to her brother-in-law, her loyalty will always lie with her husband and she’s been understanding of his reaction to the claims.

She told OK! magazine: “Kate has been there for William recently, especially after his conversations with Harry didn’t go too well. Kate has always remained loyal to William despite how close she was to Harry. Her loyalties are with her husband and their family. Even though she’d love peace and harmony, she sympathises with William’s upset and anger.”

Kate’s family, including parents Carole and Michael Middleton, have always been a huge support to the couple so it’s likely they’ve also been on the other end of the phone. They play a big role in Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis’s upbringing, and Carole often helps out with childcare. Katie describes the Middletons as Kate and William’s “anchor”, saying: “It’s a real sense of normality amid any chaos. William has always loved spending time with all the Middletons as it’s his escapism.

“He’s close to Carole and Michael and always insisted the royal family treat them well, which the Queen has done. She welcomed them with open arms.”

[From The Daily Mirror]

As much as I sometimes believe that William runs to Katie Nicholl with exclusives – there are just too many stories from his perspective or Kate’s perspective – this one clearly came from Carole Middleton, right? That’s been happening a lot over the past month, this feeling that Middleton Manor – Bucklebury Castle – is running their own royal communications office and pushing stories about poor Keen Kate being mortified, yet also supportive of her rage-monster husband. And baked into the stories are claims that well, at least William has the support of his dear surrogate mother, Carole Middleton, who is basically the Queen at this point. It’s very creepy to see Carole run her own operation like this. And it proves some assumptions I made about the Middletons’ role in the attacks on Harry and Meghan too. Carole seemed especially pissed off that Harry fell for Meghan. Like, Carole took it as a personal affront.

The Ecclestones leave their hotel in NYC ahead of some shopping

Remember when British “socialites” Sabine Getty and Lady Alice Manners thought the Duchess of Sussex needed to “sit down”? I feel like that’s probably a widespread view in the British aristocracy and even in nouveau riche British circles. The caste system of British society is so structured and antiquated, I feel like none of these people can believe that a Black American actress thought she could swoop in and marry a prince (and the hot prince at that). So the question becomes… how many of these a–holes are actually going to say that publicly and clout-chase a gauche prince-stealing American so they can get their names in the papers? Petra Ecclestone just raised her hand.

She’s only just moved back into her £16 million Los Angeles mansion after relocating to Monaco for a few months, but Petra Ecclestone, youngest daughter of F1 billionaire Bernie, is already having a dig at fellow California residents, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.

‘I always tried to stand up for her,’ says the heiress, 32, of former actress Meghan Markle. ‘Harry and Meghan did have the freedom to leave [the Royal Family] if they really didn’t want that life. But, on the other hand, they said they wanted privacy and they didn’t want to be famous and they didn’t want to do interviews — but all they’ve done since is basically do interviews.’

[From The Daily Mail]

The Sussexes did one interview, for what it’s worth. The rest of the Sussexes’ public comments have been through their spokesperson, or they’ve released statements in their own voices clarifying issues. Oh, and they did Zoom calls with charities. Do those count as “interviews”? Anyway, I’m starting to believe that so many of these British people are just “simple.” They choose to misconstrue the Sussexes’ desire to be out of the British media’s 24-7 toxic cycle and make that into “but I thought they wanted PRIVACY, they’re invading their own privacy!” Anyway, I hope Harry and Meghan are having a good day and I hope they do dozens of interviews and continue to ether these people.

Britain's Meghan, Duchess of Sussex reacts as she arrives to visit Canada House, in London on January 7, 2020, in thanks for the warm Canadian hospitality and support they received during their recent stay in Canada.

Royal wedding

During the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s interview with Oprah, they described the lead-up to their 2018 wedding and how they knew, even then, that their wedding was going to be a huge global event. Harry and Meghan described how they wanted to just do a private wedding service just for them before the actual wedding, so they asked the Archbishop of Canterbury to come by and they said their vows and felt like they got their private moment. What was a sweet story about Harry & Meghan wanting a different memory in which they shared their vows before the actual wedding has become one of the centerpieces of an unhinged series of articles in the British media. The British media believes if they can somehow fact-check this story and prove that Meghan and Harry were “lying” about “getting married before the wedding,” then somehow H&M can both be written off as liars. It’s insane. And it keeps getting crazier:

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s marriage certificate contradicts the Duchess of Sussex’s claim that they secretly tied the knot in their backyard days before their lavish public exchange of vows, according to a report. During her bombshell TV interview with Oprah Winfrey, Markle said she and Harry had actually gotten hitched three days before their highly publicized ceremony in 2018. But the document The Sun obtained from the General Registrar’s Office confirms that the nuptials did take place on May 19 that year at Windsor Castle.

The news outlet also reported that the official who drew up the license for the couple’s wedding dismissed Markle’s claim.

“I’m sorry, but Meghan is obviously confused and clearly misinformed. They did not marry three days earlier in front of the Archbishop of Canterbury,” Stephen Borton, former chief clerk at the Faculty Office, told The Sun. “What I suspect they did was exchange some simple vows they had perhaps written themselves, and which is fashionable, and said that in front of the Archbishop — or, and more likely, it was a simple rehearsal,” Borton added.

During the sit-down with Oprah, Markle said: “You know, three days before our wedding, we got married. No one knows that. The vows that we have framed in our room are just the two of us in our backyard with the Archbishop of Canterbury.” She said she and Harry called the Archbishop, the Most Rev. Justin Welby, and asked him to marry them privately at their home in Nottingham Cottage. “Just the three of us,” the prince chimed in.

Borton threw cold water on their claim. “They couldn’t have got married in the grounds of Nottingham Cottage as it is not an authorized venue and there were not enough witnesses present. You cannot be married with just three people. It’s not a valid ceremony,” he told The Sun. “Any certificate she may have of her vows on the wall is not an official wedding certificate,” he continued. “The wedding itself took place at St. George’s Chapel under the conditions stipulated by the Royal Marriages Act of 1772, which have been recently amended. In order for them to be married a special license was drawn up and the wording from Her Majesty the Queen authorizing the wedding and the official venue was recorded.”

[From Page Six]

No, really, the British media keeps doing this. At no point did Meghan and Harry claim that the backyard wedding was their super-duper official and legal wedding. Within the context of the larger story they were telling, they were describing how much attention their wedding was getting and they just wanted to do something for themselves. God help us all. “I can’t believe Meghan would LIE about having an official legal wedding, you guys, she was probably lying about how racist we are too!”

With all of this unhinged attention to the “pre-wedding” vow exchange story, the Sussexes’ spokesperson has now confirmed: “The couple exchanged personal vows a few days before their official/legal wedding on May 19.”

How many of you sat through Zack Synder’s Justice League this weekend? I did. I agree it’s better than the first one, but that’s about as much praise as I can give it (which isn’t much). However I can see why there is a lot of talk about the Batfleck again, Zach certainly did him justice (ha! See what I did there?) But has all the renewed interest in Ben Affleck coming back as Batman gotten the attention of his ex-girlfriend Ana de Armas? There are rumors that the former highly caffeinated, dog-walking flames might be dating again after splitting two months ago. Ana got those started when she posted the shot above to her Instagram stories. That is the same half heart necklace that Ben got so much attention for wearing back in May 2020 while they were dating. Soon everyone flooded her comment section asking about Ben. But Ana shut that news down with a follow up story that was just several versions of “Nope!”

Nothing to see here! Ana de Armas appeared to shut down rumors that she and Ben Affleck are back together two months after their split.

The Knives Out star, 32, raised eyebrows on Sunday, March 21, when she uploaded a selfie to her Instagram Stories that showed her wearing a half-heart necklace. The Oscar winner, 48, was previously spotted rocking the other half of the gold pendant in May 2020 when they were still in a relationship.

De Armas’ captionless post sparked speculation that the former couple were giving their romance another try. However, she seemingly denied that was the case on Monday, March 22, by posting a series of GIFs that read “Nope,” “No” and “I Don’t Think So” on her Instagram Stories alongside a hand making a peace sign.

[From Us]

CB asked last year who held the other half of the necklace and we still don’t know. There is no right or wrong way to wear them, of course, but I have never known anyone to openly display their half unless they wanted to make a statement. Those who wear them for sentimental reasons tend to tuck them inside their shirts. Different strokes for different folks, I guess. Or, maybe Ana wanted the intended person to see it, she simply doesn’t want us to know who that is.

Regardless of whether she meant for it to catch this much attention, it did get Ana’s name in the headlines right when Ben was trending on Twitter. Unfortunately, all the articles mentioning the rumors and the necklace also bring up her life-sized cutout being dumped in the trash. I don’t really care one way or the other if they hook up again. I do think Ben has been working on his sobriety and that he’s been pretty successful of late. I hope that’s his focus and not who his next relationship is. Ana is lovely and very talented. I don’t really think she needs gimmicks to keep her name in the news. But I don’t think she’s above pulling gimmicks to keep her name in the news either.

Meghan Markle, Duchess of Sussex, and Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex, attend a roundtable discussion on gender equality!

Mid-day yesterday, a curious story popped up on Page Six’s feed. The same story popped up on the Twitter accounts of certain royal reporters as well. The story? The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have “lost” another staff member. I could already feel the neo-colonialist fingers twitching to type out 4,000-word screeds about how Meghan is a bully IN AMERICA and that’s why an Archewell staffer. According to the haters, Catherine St-Laurent is leaving the posts of “chief of staff” and “executive director” of Archewell. As we learned just an hour later though, St-Laurent IS actually leaving those positions… and she’s taking a different position within Archewell.

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry are making some changes to their team. The couple confirmed Monday that they’ve hired producer Ben Browning as head of content for Archewell Productions and Archewell Audio, the companies they launched with their partnerships with Netflix and Spotify. Browning’s past work includes The Big Sick, Arrival and Room as well as current Academy Award Best Picture nominee Promising Young Woman.

“From the moment they shared their vision for Archewell as a global production company that will spotlight diverse voices and share uplifting stories, I knew I wanted to help with this unique opportunity,” Browning said in a statement. “It’s a thrilling company to be starting.”

Also on Monday, the couple’s office confirmed that Meghan and Harry’s Archewell Foundation director Catherine St-Laurent has transitioned to a senior advisory role.

Further, Invisible Hand, a diverse, female-led team based in N.Y.C. founded by Genevieve Roth as a social impact and culture change agency, was also confirmed as recently coming on board at Archewell.

Longtime Sussex advisor James Holt will now act as Archewell Foundation’s executive director, while global press secretary Toya Holness will take over Holt’s communications duties in the U.K.

“Archewell is incredibly pleased to welcome Ben, Genevieve and the Invisible Hand team to the organization,” Holness said in a statement. “Along with the appointment of James Holt as Executive Director of Archewell Foundation, they join a rapidly expanding team that’s deeply dedicated to advancing systemic cultural change and supporting compassionate communities across the world.”

[From People]

I have a question: how did certain outlets (the predictable ones) get it wrong right off the bat? Was there a leak in the House of Sussex? Or did H&M send out a press release ahead of schedule and certain reporters decided to “spin” St-Laurent’s in-house move as “another bullied staff member quitting because of Mean Meghan!” A question for another time, I suppose. Anyway, these sound like good moves, moves that will ensure that the right people are in the right positions in the months and years to come. And hopefully they’ll have some big projects to announce or launch very soon.

Anti-Asian violence has been increasing over the last year after Trump linked COVID to China and Asia. We have been horrified by the attacks on Asian elders. Eight people were murdered by a white supremacist who targeted Asian spas in Georgia. It is absolutely despicable that the press and local police captain have tried to humanize the terrorist. Since this unconscionable event has taken place, there have been several Stop Asian Hate rallies organized. It was one such rally in Pittsburgh, PA that Sandra Oh came out to support. In a video captured by photojournalist Kristina Serafin, Sandra gave an impassioned speech about being proud to be Asian. Sandra stated that Asians belong in America just as much as anyone else. Below is more on the event from Access Online:

Local photojournalist Kristina Serafini captured Sandra’s powerful speech in a video posted to Twitter, and the clip quickly went viral.

“To everyone here…I will challenge everyone here: If you see something, will you help me? If you see one of our sisters and brothers in need, will you help us?” Sandra said, after acknowledging her gratitude for the opportunity to gather with other attendees and share their collective outrage.

“For many of us in our communities,” Sandra continued, “this is the first time we are even able to voice our fear and our anger, and I really am so grateful to everyone willing to listen…One thing that I know is that many in our community are very scared, and I understand that. And one way to go through and get through our fear is to reach out to our communities.”

The 49-year-old went on to encourage those listening to join forces, and she added how honored she felt to be able to express herself publicly.

“We must understand, as Asian-Americans, we just need to reach out our hand to our sisters and brothers and say, ‘Help me and I’m here,’” she added. “And just for one thing, I am proud to be Asian! I belong here! Many of us don’t get that chance to be able to say that, so I just wanted to give us an opportunity to be able to shout that. Thank you so much.”

[From Access Online]

I stand with my Asian brothers and sisters including those from South and Southeast Asia. This violence is feeling very much like what was happening to people who were from the Middle East or were Muslim adjacent after 9/11. We should all stand with the Asian community to combat this anti-Asian sentiment. White supremacy is a drug that needs to be eradicated. I have always been a fan of Sandra Oh and she will always be Christina Yang for me. Sandra has spoken up when it wasn’t popular to do so and is proud of her heritage. I love that she showed up at this rally and emphasized that are we connected to each other. People like Sandra Oh who have large platforms need to continue to speak out. Call and check in with your Asian friends and family and let them know you stand with them. I will no longer allow the divide and conquer attitudes that come from white supremacy to prevail. Because I truly believe that “what happens to one of us, happens to all of us.”

Before Oprah’s interview with the Duke and Duchess of Sussex even aired, we knew that Oprah had spent hours with Harry and Meghan and that there was a significant amount of pure interview footage which had to be cut. When you really think about it, what was aired during those two hours was only the tip of the keen iceberg, and I would assume that there was a lot of scandalous and interesting stuff left on the cutting room floor. Well, looks like British people have finally realized that too, and now they want a second Sussex special, or perhaps the full-length interview.

ITV wants to show unseen footage from Harry and bombshell interview with Oprah Winfrey. More than 90 minutes have not been aired – and palace aides fear it could include damaging revelations. The development comes as courtiers try to broker peace talks between brothers Harry, 36, and William, 38, before new statue of their mother Diana is unveiled in July.

An industry source told the Sunday People: “There is a lot of interest in showing the interview in full. The original programme was the biggest show of the year so far in the UK and was bought by firms around the world. Showing more of it would be a guaranteed ratings winner. Oprah’s production company know they’re sitting on a goldmine so it’s possible a deal could be done.”

It is understood ITV paid £1million for the rights to the original programme – but sources say this only covered the part aired in the US. The talk was syndicated to 70 countries netting millions of dollars, but Harry and Meghan reportedly were not paid.

[From The Daily Mirror]

I suggested weeks ago that Oprah should cut together a second special with the unaired footage, and perhaps even do an updated special with Harry and Meghan talking about all of the sh-t that’s happened in just the past four weeks. I doubt H&M will give another interview so soon though, and as for the additional footage… who knows. It will definitely be interesting to see what comes of it. That’s all up to Oprah, she owns the footage (through Harpo Productions) and she can do whatever she wants with it. Clearly, she already provided CBS with additional clips, so it would be great to see CBS (and ITV, I guess) convince her to use all of her footage.

I absolutely love authenticity and applaud anyone who lives their truth no matter how much push back they get. This is why I love Billy Porter. I fell in love with Billy’s sartorial clothing choices at award shows. My favorite of course was Billy’s 2019 Oscar’s tuxedo gown from Christian Siriano. That was the moment I knew Billy wasn’t playing by anyone’s rules and I was here for it. In a profile with InStyle, Billy said that he measures his life as BO (before Oscars) and AO (after Oscars). He said that Oscars moment gave him raised his profile and, although he welcomes it, he no longer has the anonymity he once did. Billy is using platform to give others permission to embrace genderless fashion and authentic expression. He also explained how reactions to his fashion can be hurtful. Below are a few excerpts:

Part of his loss of privacy over the past few years stems from his larger-than-life Emmy-winning turn as Pray Tell in FX’s ballroom-culture drama, Pose. The other part of it has to do with the massive following he’s gained since the 2019 Oscars, when he arrived in a statement-making, gender-bending custom Christian Siriano tuxedo gown that both broke the Internet and launched him into instant fashion-icon status.

When speaking about his evolution, Porter puts things into two categories: “BO or AO,” meaning before Oscars or after Oscars. The impact of the look on his career was no accident. Porter knew he was about to step onto one of the world’s biggest stages and was ready to seize the moment. “I thought back to when my friend Idina Menzel was at the Oscars [in 2014] to sing ‘Let It Go,’ from Frozen, and John Travolta mispronounced her name onstage,” he says. “I literally said out loud, ‘She’s going to be a household name in less than 24 hours.’ And she was. As funny as it may sound, I’m a businessman, and wearing that [Oscars] dress was a business decision, in a sense. People were like, ‘Oh, he’s just trying to get attention.’ Well, yeah, I’m in show business! It’s part of my job. Otherwise, I don’t eat.”

Porter’s other hope was that the look would inspire a long-overdue conversation about genderless fashion. “I used to get frustrated that women could wear whatever they wanted and men had to show up in the same penguin suit,” he says. “The reason why women wearing pants is considered OK by society’s standards is because it comes from the patriarchy. The patriarchy is male, so suits are strong, and anything feminine is weak. I was sick of that discussion, and I knew my platform allowed me to challenge it.”

While the look went viral and applause emojis showered Porter’s feed in an outpouring of love, there were also a lot of close-minded comments hurled his way. A particularly frustrating moment happened in January 2020, when he was invited to appear on Public Television’s Sesame Street wearing his Siriano gown. After the show shared Instagram photos of Porter on set, Jason Rapert, a Republican Arkansas state senator, wrote a Facebook post slamming PBS for using taxpayer dollars to promote a “radical LGBTQ+ agenda,” adding that he could pass a bill to “cut off all funding” to the network. A petition to remove Porter’s appearance on the show from pro-life group Life Petitions also began to circulate, alleging that Sesame Street was trying to “sexualize children using drag queens” by featuring Porter in his gown.

“It was based on this idea that I’m coming to get their children because of the way I dress,” says Porter, shaking his head. “What is that? I’m over here minding my own business. So why is it triggering you? At that moment, I was grateful that I am a man of a certain age, because when you become a certain age, zero f—s are given. I don’t now, nor will I ever, adjudicate my life or my humanity in [other people’s] sound bites or responses on social media. Simultaneously, it still hurts to have people come after me for nothing.”

Porter looks at his sartorial choices as another form of his artistry, much like any song he performs or character he embodies. “It’s how I express myself,” he says. “When Lady Gaga dresses up and performs a song on TV as if she’s a man [Jo Calderone at the 2011 MTV VMAs], no one bats an eye. They receive her as an artist who’s playing with different silhouettes and ideas. Same with David Bowie. When white and straight people do it, they’re considered artists. When I do it, I’m a perversion. The answer to that from me is no.”

[From Instyle]

While I have not gotten into Pose yet, as I mentioned I admire Billy’s fearless fashion. I grew up in the 80s when men dressing in more feminine styles was de rigueur. We had Prince in high heels and ruffles, David Bowie in a dress and Rick James in makeup. We did not judge it but accepted it. It is so odd to me how everyone is making a big deal of Billy Porter and Harry Styles’ fashion choices. I love how Billy was like, “why is my living my life and minding my business triggering you?” Like seriously, he isn’t hurting anyone so why are people having an issue? If parents fear that celebrities have more influence over their children maybe those parents need to reconsider their parenting skills. In the meantime, I want these conservative wingnuts to stop policing how people are living their lives. If people like Rep. Jason Rapert are afraid that Billy just living his life authentically will shock his children he can always just turn off the TV. Billy is a national treasure and I hope he continues to live his best life and wear his ostentatious fashion. Billy shouldn’t worry about pissing people off because rule breakers and trail blazers often do.

During the pandemic my perception of other people’s timelines is completely off kilter. Mandy Moore’s pregnancy went by in a blink and yet I feel like Ashley Tisdale has been pregnant for three years. She’s probably due very soon. This is Ashley’s first baby, and she hasn’t spoken much about it, which is why it’s weird that it feels like it’s been so long. But I appreciate that she’s bringing up pregnancy subjects many others don’t. She discussed plantar fasciitis that she developed while pregnant. I didn’t get it while pregnant but immediately after giving birth and thank gawd I was still wearing heels every day because I could not put a flat foot on the ground for months. Ashley recently penned an essay for frenshe in which she discussed being ashamed of her pregnant body at the start of her pregnancy, even though she loved her body for growing a baby.

I haven’t gotten the whole warm and fuzzy feeling about my pregnant body being beautiful. Don’t get me wrong, I am so proud of my body and I’m so grateful to be able to create a home and grow my little one.

However, seeing my body look so different is still a little startling to me. It’s like I don’t fully recognize myself and almost like an out-of-body experience. Thoughts like, “Is that really me?” come to mind. I think it comes down to body acceptance vs body love. I think that you can love your body, no matter what shape or form, but it’s the acceptance part that trips me up a little.

I don’t know what my body will be like after the baby comes, but I do know I’m going to give it time, let it heal, and take really good care of it. I wanted to share this because I’m sure that like a lot of other people, I felt ashamed that I was uncomfortable at first. Yet, it’s important to honor how you feel and understand that everyone has a different experience with pregnancy.

[From frenshe]

I understand what Ashley is saying. I don’t think I ever felt it as acutely as she is because I was never hired for or paid to maintain my appearance. Ashley mentioned that people have commented on her size, asking if she’s sure she’s not having twins and maybe she’s farther along than she thinks. I got that too. I was huge, but my weight was healthy so my size didn’t bug me. I don’t know why because I’m usually so sensitive to weight comments. But I definitely stopped feeling sexy. I remember trying to dress as such one night, close to my due date. It was sort of our last night as a couple before we became parents. One look in the mirror and I barked out in laughter. But I’ve known women, especially living in LA, who’ve really struggled with their changing appearance during pregnancy. I think Ashley makes an excellent point about body acceptance vs body love.

I think it’s important Ashley and others discuss things like this. We’re still peddling the Mother supreme complex to women and gawd forbid some poor woman feel pregnancy or childbirth is less than the most perfect experience. I don’t have much advice on to give here but I leaned into my maternity style. I never felt sexy, but I was still stylish. There are so many maternity looks for women today, including really chic and comfortable maternity jeans. And I couldn’t afford the fancy stores either. Although there are plenty of well-priced maternity stores and lines, consignment and second-hand are wonderful options for maternity clothing because the clothes are barely worn. Ashley is focusing on the fact she’s creating life to overcome how she feels about her new body shape. I dressed my bump to feel better about it. Maybe some of our other moms have some suggestions as well. But if you’ve been struggling with this new version of you, like Ashley said, not everyone has to have the same experience, so give yourself a break.
