A post shared by Paula Abdul (@paulaabdul)
Paula Abdul has a new interview with Parade Magazine that my local paper included in an insert called “Spry Living.” I enjoy Paula and she usually gives a good interview. Paula talked to Parade about how much she loves being a judge on The Masked Singer and about her rheumatoid arthritis and how she keeps active. Paula, 58, said that stretching is key and that she tries to stretch in the morning and at night. I’m reporting this to get myself to stretch more, honestly. If I talk about it enough maybe I’ll finally do it. Here’s more of what Paula told Parade:
What do you do for rehabilitation?
I’ve done Pilates. I take ice baths. One of the things that works for me is Voltaren, a pain relief gel. And now that I’ve been able to implement this into my daily routine, it helps prolong my life as a performer. I was used to being in pretty bad pain, but the pain relief is almost instantaneous and gets me through my performances. One of my best friends also gave me a mini Theragun [a handheld deep muscle massager] during the pandemic. I can fit it in my purse and I can massage out my muscles and joints. And for me, that’s just part and parcel to something else that’s good for me.
What does your day-to-health routine look like?
I try to eat anti-inflammatory and alkaline foods [to maintain an optimal pH level in the body]. I’m not crazy with it, but I do everything that I can in moderation and that definitely helps me. And I don’t like saying “diet.” To me, that word sets me up to fail. I just try to maintain a healthy lifestyle.
What are some stretching habits you live by?
It’s very easy to succumb to being a couch potato and watching TV, especially during the pandemic, but not moving is the worst situation for anyone who suffers from rheumatoid arthritis or osteoarthritis. Stretching is critical. I stretch in the morning right when I get up, and I stretch before I go to bed. And that’s a form of meditation. I set a devotion in the morning and meditate on it, same thing before going to sleep. I also stretch while watching TV. During the commercials, I will get up and do a little bit of movement, stretch, take that time to dance it out. Even if it’s five minutes here or there, then all of a sudden, you’re at 15 minutes.
What have you done to keep your excitement and creativity up?
I love to try new things. I recently took an online ballroom dance lesson. It’s pretty funny when you’re doing one part and you see the instructor doing the other part, but you’re dancing by yourself! I’ve also done some cooking lessons online. I’ve been cooking and baking up a storm.
Paula also talked about losing three of her dogs during lockdown, which sounds heartbreaking, and how she’s not dating because she’s not even hanging out with her friends. I love that she’s taking things seriously. So many people aren’t, particularly celebrities who seem to be hooking up with new partners left and right.
Apart from how much she stretches I could relate to a lot of what she said. I also love baking and cooking now and have taken dancing lessons on Zoom. Dancing is one of my favorite things too. I will gladly do hard cardio like kickboxing and spinning, but it’s hard for me to slow down enough to stretch or do yoga. As a result I’m having muscle soreness and pain now that I’ve upped my workouts, which is ridiculous. I meditate about once a day, but I either want to go full speed when I work out or just rest, there’s no in between. I definitely need it though. Oya teaches tantra yoga once a week and I love that because it’s slow and you get to rest a lot. It’s much more like meditation than typical yoga. Maybe that’s similar to what Paula does when she stretches.

Princess Eugenie had her baby on February 9th. She gave birth at a private hospital, the same one as the Duchess of Sussex, and much like Meghan, Eugenie waited hours to announce the news. Which is her right! It’s her baby and I’m glad she was given the chance to deliver the baby in peace before announcing it on Instagram. I wish the press had not made such a big f–king deal about it when Meghan and Harry did the same. I also think it’s really strange that it’s now been nine days and we still don’t know the baby’s name. But maybe it’s because Eugenie’s birth situation was more complicated than we originally thought. Eugenie stayed in Portland Hospital for more than three full days after the baby was born, and now we’re learning more about Eugenie’s C-section:
Princess Eugenie’s baby boy is “a complete dream.” Queen Elizabeth’s granddaughter welcomed her first child with husband Jack Brooksbank on Feb. 9, and the couple is enjoying their first days as a family of three.
Eugenie, 30, is “doing really well” after having a C-section due to her previous spinal surgery for scoliosis, a source who has spoken to the new mom since the birth tells PEOPLE in this week’s issue. Buckingham Palace confirmed the baby’s arrival, adding that he was “safely delivered.” Eugenie’s delivery was likely more complicated than many new moms’ as she has dealt with severe scoliosis for most of her life and had corrective surgery at age 12, which led to her needing a C-section.
Dr. Mary Jane Minkin, a board-certified OB/GYN at Yale University School of Medicine and member of PEOPLE’s Health Squad, said pregnant patients with a history of scoliosis surgery are evaluated on a case-by-case basis. If the placement of the rods makes an epidural not possible, the patient and doctor will come up with alternative anesthesia options.
The source adds that Eugenie “sounded very content and said the baby is a complete dream!”
Because of coronavirus pandemic restrictions, the baby boy has yet to meet his grandparents, Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson, the source says.
[From People]
I didn’t even think about her scoliosis and the epidural before now. So she had a C-section but they probably gave her alternative anesthesia. I remember reading about the old anesthesia methods after finding myself curious about it during Mad Men (the episode where Betty gives birth is WILD). There are all kinds of anesthesia methods, some of which will make women trip their asses off and feel zero pain. I wonder if Eugenie had THAT. Anyway, I hope Eugenie is doing well and I hope she does have some help at home beyond Jack. While she would probably love to see her parents, I’m glad that she has had this time to just be with Jack and the baby. And I do hope we get a name at some point!

The People Magazine exclusives about Kim Kardashian continue to read like entries from Kim’s diary. I’ve suggested previously that People & Kim have some kind of under-the-table deal for weekly exclusives about what’s going on in her life and the state of her marriage. I still believe that! At least this week’s update feels truthy. People’s sources claim that Kanye West is “struggling” with the end of his marriage. This too is why Kim hasn’t filed for divorce yet – I still believe that Kim is very wary of triggering a manic episode in Kanye, and she’s aware of how her moves might affect his mental health.
By all accounts, Kim Kardashian and estranged husband Kanye West are heading towards divorce — and a source close to the rapper tells PEOPLE that he is struggling as reality sets in.
“Kanye is not doing well,” the source tells PEOPLE in its latest issue. “He is anxious and very sad. He knows that the marriage is over, and there’s nothing that can be done right now. He also knows what he is losing in Kim.”
According to sources, 2020 proved to be a trying year for the famous couple. In January 2021, multiple sources confirmed to PEOPLE that Kardashian plans to end her marriage with West. “They are just not on the same page when it comes to their future as a family,” one insider told PEOPLE at the time. “And Kim is okay with it.”
In addition to Kardashian’s public support of West, she has also been a mediator between him and her family. “She has defended him privately to her family,” the source says. “She has stood beside him at a time where a few wives would have done that.”
While no divorce papers have yet been filed, multiple sources tell PEOPLE that a split is imminent. “There is very little hope of reconciliation,” says the source. “It would have to be a miracle. But Kanye does believe in miracles.”
Kardashian, 40, is the primary caregiver for the couple’s four children: daughters North, 7½, and Chicago, 3, and sons Saint, 5, and Psalm, who turns 2 in May. She has told her inner circle that she wants West to be a part of their lives.
“Kim has made it clear that Kanye can talk to his children anytime he wants,” says the source. “She has never threatened to keep him from the kids. She only requires that he is not going to damage them. Kanye can FaceTime the kids anytime he wants. He hasn’t been great about that, but everyone is encouraging him to do it.”
“Kim doesn’t want to hurt him,” the source continues. “She just knows she can’t be married to him anymore. He is very aware that she has been a good wife. He still loves her very much. But he understands.”
[From People]
I know this is Kim’s version of events, but I believe this? Weeks ago, we heard that Kanye was over the marriage too, that he couldn’t wait to divorce Kim, but that never rang true for me? Kim really has been ride-or-die, for better or for worse, and Kanye thought she would stay that way forever. She stayed with him even when he was saying and doing some horrendous sh-t. Plus, the current version of Kanye is super-churchy and very “conservative.” That’s another aspect of it – he thinks of himself as a man of God, who knows God’s will, and now he’s just some fallible dude whose wife wants a divorce.
Ye is still wearing his wedding ring too.
