People Magazine’s first cover of 2021 is the Duke and Duchess of Sussex: one year after the Sussexit announcement. How glorious! People Magazine doesn’t have any statements from Meghan and Harry, but of course unnamed sources are quite talkative. This People story gets to the heart of one of the biggest reasons why everyone in the UK has collectively lost their minds about the Sussexit: Harry and Meghan don’t regret leaving. Sure, maybe they would have done a few things differently, but they dreamed up a different way to live and now here they are, enjoying their lives away from that crushing pettiness.
One year ago, Meghan Markle and Prince Harry announced their decision to step away from royal duty — a departure that would change the royal family forever.
“Meghan and Harry took a huge leap of faith to embark on their new life,” a source close to the couple tells PEOPLE in this week’s cover story. It was a leap that would reshape not just the royal family but the monarchy too.
Harry, 36, who long felt marginalized by the role of “spare” in the line of succession—an issue that has plagued generations of royal siblings, including Queen Elizabeth’s sister, Princess Margaret — “finally found a solution,” says royal historian Robert Lacey, “which is essentially to get out and start a new life. To stay in the royal system is to go along with subservience to those more senior than you. He has asserted his own identity.”
This “progressive new role,” as the couple described it in their previous statement outlining the change — including earning their own income — offered a fresh start. “It was always their dream to be financially independent and pay their own way,” says the source close to the couple. With that dream finally realized, “The year started out with a lot of excitement and anticipation,” says a source close to the prince. “Harry was finally doing what he’d wanted to do for years, and to have Meghan and [19-month-old son] Archie with him was all he could have asked for.”
But as the world would soon learn, nothing about 2020 went according to the plan. The couple’s scheduled launch of their charitable Archewell Foundation and their intention to “balance” their time between the U.S. and the U.K. would soon be disrupted by the unforeseen chaos of the COVID-19 pandemic. When the pandemic hit just as the details of the so-called “Sandringham Summit” agreement took effect in March, it soon became clear that much of the compromise the couple had hoped to attain was not to be. But if they didn’t leave the U.K. with everything they wanted, they did walk away with the biggest prize: The freedom to set their own course.
“Despite everything that has been going on this year, they don’t regret their move to the U.S.,” says an insider. “They love that they are able to focus on projects and causes that are important to them.”
[From People]
I do think that Harry and Meghan worked out several plans and that was one of the things that freaked out the Windsors too – H&M said “we’d like to be part-time royals and spend less time in the UK but still work on behalf of the crown and the British people.” That was Plan A, and it was shut down by Petty Betty. So the Sussexes were like “okay cool well here’s Plan B, we f–king leave and you can suck a royal lemon.” And the Pettys were like “whoa whoa wait what?” And it was a leap of faith, damn it. That’s why there’s been so much hysteria coming from the royal commentary class – they have no frame of reference for any of this.

Kelly Ripa has a new forward to a lifestyle change book that helped/maybe paid her. It’s called Get Off Your Sugar: Stress Eating to Strength Eating by Dr. Daryl Gioffre. It helps people quit eating sugar-rich foods by understanding how addictive it is and what it does to your body and substituting whole foods instead. It sounds practical, and Kelly said that it helped her beat her sugar addiction for good. She used to have a “sugar drawer,” I’m assuming at work, and was able to stop eating sugar by following Dr. Gioffre’s plan. I could relate to her story so much. People Magazine reports this:
Dr. Daryl Gioffre’s new book, Get Off Your Sugar,… focuses on adding nutrient-dense foods to one’s diet to help kick sugar addiction, as opposed to taking things away.
According to Ripa, she used to be addicted to sugar herself, but Dr. Gioffre’s program has “helped changed [her] life” over the past year.
“For years I had a candy drawer at home that I kept fully stocked and would dip into whenever I felt the faintest urge for sugar,” she writes. “I knew that sugar isn’t good for you, but I figured that everybody needed to have some kind of vice, right? What was so bad about rewarding myself with something sweet?”
“What I didn’t fully appreciate is just how addictive sugar truly is,” she says, adding that Dr. Gioffre told her that “sugar is eight times more addictive than cocaine.”
“That helped me feel better about having them, but I still didn’t know how I would prevent the cravings from happening in the first place,” Ripa says.
Ripa says that she previously did Dr. Gioffre’s alkaline cleanse to help remove acidic foods from her diet, which gave her “great results” that eliminated “some recurring aches and pains that I had chalked up to getting older.”
“I was so inspired, I got rid of the candy drawer,” she recalls. “If only my cravings had disappeared with it! Sadly, they didn’t. When life got super busy with work, or the kids, or both, the urge to eat jelly beans would come on so strong it took everything I had not to send my husband out to the deli to pick some up…”
Dr. Gioffre tells PEOPLE that the average American eats about 130 lbs. of sugar a year, which “creates its own self-perpetuating cycle of cravings, and because it’s so acidic, it makes your body work harder just to keep going.”
He recommends starting the day with green juice and incorporating more healthy fats like avocado to help kick the sugar habit.
“There’s actually an alternative to [stress eating] called strength eating,” he adds. “As you start to add more strength foods into your diet, it will begin to crowd out the stress foods. Strength eating is not based on deprivation — it’s based on adding to what you are already doing. You can’t choose not to eat, but you can choose what to eat. And once you begin to strength eat, big things start happening: Your energy increases. You lose weight. Your digestion improves. You sleep better. Cravings naturally go away, and your body just plain feels better.”
Kelly also claimed that Dr. Gioffree “tested her biological age” and it was 35. Maybe that’s how he got her to write the forward to his book. I’m just doing my job and being snarky, but she bugs. She is really healthy though and I would never have guessed that she was a sugar addict. I hope people say the same about me, but I doubt it.
A few months ago, I got the Whole 30 book from the library. I know a lot of you swear by that plan but I get ragey at diets that make you give up entire food groups. If you cheat even a little with dairy or gluten it makes you start all over again. Instead of doing that, I vowed to cook more and eat more whole foods, which sounds similar to this book. I was able to do it somewhat and have been cooking and baking more, but I still regularly buy chocolate and ice cream and sometimes candy like jelly beans and Necco wafers (shut up I love them). I think this plan is doable for me and I’m really interested in it. However I haven’t made giving up sugar a resolution this year. Lately I feel accomplished just getting through the days, doing my work and getting a workout in. I don’t want to put more pressure on myself to give up my main vice, as Kelly said. I haven’t had a drink in four and a half years! Candy is minor, right?

For the past nine months or so, we’ve been seeing a ton of exclusives from People Magazine, Page Six and various British outlets about the state of Kim Kardashian and Kanye West’s marriage. They had problems before 2020, and Kim even consulted divorce lawyers at one point (early 2017), but she stuck with Kanye… until she didn’t. Kim has been over him for a while. They largely lived separate lives in 2020, and Kim kept leaking sh-t to People about how she was seriously considering divorce. And now here it is – Page Six broke the story last night (which I covered earlier), and other outlets followed suit. There’s not much new info:
Kim Kardashian West and Kayne West had a tumultuous 2020 — including the rapper’s unsuccessful presidential bid and numerous Twitter rants — and it looks like the pair’s 2021 might be even more tumultuous with the possible demise of their marriage. After six years of marriage and eight years together, Kardashian West is working with top divorce lawyer Laura Wasser, though she has yet to file for divorce.
A source tells PEOPLE that West is bracing himself for the reality star to file. However, there still may be a chance the couple weather this storm as another source tells PEOPLE they are in therapy in an effort to salvage their relationship.
“Kim and Kanye are in counseling and exploring their options,” says the source. “They have been working on their marriage for a long time, but no decision has been made.”
[From People]
I don’t think they’ll reconcile. I honestly believe that Kim gave Kanye multiple opportunities to change and really be a full partner in their marriage, and he wouldn’t or couldn’t. I’m also not surprised that Kim hasn’t actually filed for divorce yet – she’s working with Laura Wasser, and I bet there’s a lot of sh-t happening behind-the-scenes. Kim probably wants to have some stuff locked down before she files. Sources also told Us Weekly that Kim’s friends are surprised that she hasn’t filed yet, for whatever that’s worth. As for the other Kardashian-preferred outlet, TMZ, they had a more nuanced exclusive on the imminent divorce:
Kim Kardashian and Kanye West have been in marriage counseling, and we’ve learned the subject of divorce was looming for much of 2020, but they haven’t given up. Multiple sources with direct knowledge tell TMZ, the marriage was in deep trouble for the last half of 2020. In fact, we’re told Kim was ready to pull the plug on the marriage at one point but it was when Kanye was going through a serious bipolar episode and she felt it was cruel to do it when he wasn’t well.
They have been living separately for a few months … with Kanye spending the majority of his time in Wyoming while she has been in Calabasas with the kids. They were absorbed in personal business projects and didn’t focus on making any final decisions.
Kim has gone back and forth, we’re told … at times thinking divorce was the only option but other times believing there was a chance to save the marriage. That’s why they took a family vacation late last year … to see if they could repair things. Everything got put on hold for the Christmas holidays, but now the issue is front and center. Kim’s had disso queen Laura Wasser on retainer for years for various reasons, and the subject of divorce was discussed months ago, but Kim never gave the green light to file. Her ambivalence is understandable, what with 4 small kids. They married in May, 2014.
We’re told no final decision has been made, and it’s telling they’ve been in counseling for a while. We’re told their issues have been neither contentious nor ugly, but they do have lots of differences … from lifestyle to politics. They are, however, fully aligned on parenting. One thing our sources wanted to make clear … there is no third party.
[From TMZ]
I think that’s probably true about “there is no third party.” Kim has four children, a bipolar husband, fifty businesses and her law studies. Now, does that mean that she hasn’t been weighing her own romantic future? Of course she has. The truth is, Kim outgrew Kanye. Maybe they outgrew each other, but Kim absolutely has such a different energy and such different interests now, and I am definitely curious to see the energy Husband #4 brings to the table. Anyway… I do hope she files and I actually hope there isn’t a ton of drama. Kim might be worried that she’ll trigger another manic episode if she moves too fast on the divorce.

James Comey is a C-U-Next-Tuesday. I don’t use that word for all of my enemies, but I think it’s completely warranted for Jim Comey. Comey was the FBI Director who decided to crash the 2016 election just weeks before Election Day to announce a probe into But Her Emails. He violated the FBI’s protocol by doing so. Then for his trouble in openly helping Donald Trump get elected, Comey also oversaw an investigation into all of the early Trump-Russia connections. That’s when Trump fired him and that’s when Robert Mueller was appointed as the special counsel. To hear Comey tell it, he too is a Trump victim. He believes he stands for justice (he does not) or the rule of law (nope), and he’s absolutely a legend in his own mind. Well, Comey has a new book coming out and Comey thinks – wait for it – that the Biden-Harris administration shouldn’t bother investigating all of Donald Trump’s crimes, or the Trumpland Crime Syndicate.
Donald Trump should not be prosecuted once he leaves the White House no matter how much evidence has been amassed against him, the former FBI director James Comey writes in a new book. The next US attorney general, under Joe Biden, should not “pursue a criminal investigation of Donald Trump”, Comey writes, “no matter how compelling the roadmap left” by the special counsel Robert Mueller, or “how powerful the evidence strewn across his history of porn stars and financial fraud”.
“Although those cases might be righteous in a vacuum,” Comey writes, “the mission of the next attorney general must be fostering the trust of the American people.”
That opinion is likely to surprise many – perhaps including Trump himself – as Comey has emerged as a powerful critic of Trump and has been the frequent target of threats and insults from the 45th president. Comey’s new book, Saving Justice: Truth, Transparency and Trust, is his second and will be published on 12 January. The Guardian obtained a copy.
Comey’s high profile since leaving government has earned him as many critics as supporters and his new book will be closely examined. He writes that it is for “ordinary citizens, not legal experts or historians”, and is meant to be a guide to rebuilding institutions battered by Trump. Biden will be inaugurated on 20 January but has not yet named his nominee for attorney general. The former deputy attorney general Sally Yates, who briefly led the department while Comey led the FBI and was also fired by Trump, is among reported frontrunners. So is the former Alabama senator Doug Jones.
[From The Guardian]
This is so asinine and infuriating, I barely have words. First of all, intelligent and decent politicians can do many things all at once – they can investigate and prosecute Trump for his high crimes and misdemeanors AND foster trust with the American people. Some might even argue that prosecuting Trump would be one of the best ways to foster trust, to show that no one is above the law, and that we’re not going to ignore the blatant criminality and abuse of office just because Trump has violent white supremacists on his side.
I’d also like to continue to make this argument, because it has become more likely as we get closer to the inauguration: Biden might not have a choice. His DOJ might not have a choice. I kind of believe that President Biden doesn’t want to start his presidency by investigating his predecessor, but the Biden DOJ *will* have independence, and there was so much open, blatant criminality in the Trump Era, it’s difficult to believe that everyone in Justice or the FBI will just ignore it. The answer for Biden might be the appointment of one or several special prosecutors to investigate different aspects of the Trump criminal empire. That way, the special prosecutors can work in peace and quiet, unconnected to the Biden administration’s daily activities. So, no, the answer is NOT the Comey method, which is “let treason sh-tbirds and wannabe gangsters get away with everything because we don’t want to hurt their suckbaby loser feelings.”

First of all, thanks to Lainey Gossip for covering this because I likely wouldn’t have seen it otherwise. Also, I don’t know how much I care about Ben Affleck and Ana de Armas at this point. They were so thirsty early in the pandemic and that was fun for a while, but then they went dark and I was fine with that too. I liked the break from them, especially because they wore masks inconsistently and Anna in particular didn’t seem to be wearing masks or social distancing.
I guess I’m not surprised that Anna traveled to Cuba for the holidays to see a friend and her baby. She’s possibly family, like a cousin. Anna just has one brother, an artist named Javier. As Lainey mentions, the hospitals in LA are so full they’re turning people away and advising EMTs not to bring all patients in, but here’s Anna traveling to another country. At least she’s not on vacation I guess. She has shown us who she is and so has Ben. They’re a good match.
Anna also has a new haircut. I like it! I had a pageboy like this in the 90s when I wanted to look like Agent Scully. The question is whether this haircut is a sign that Anna and Ben are having trouble. She presumably traveled without him, but there’s a pandemic on and he may be smarter than she is about it, or at least about the optics. (Plus as some of you mentioned, Ben was probably with his kids.) She did move in with Ben late last year and that can put a strain on things, but she’s also an actress. It’s possible her new hair is for a role or that she just wanted a change after wrapping filming. We just heard she got a part on a film with Ryan Gosling and Chris Evans (again). It’s Ben though, of course he’s a moody bastard who runs hot and cold. He’s not going to break up with Anna, he’ll just make a bunch of passive aggressive moves, pull away and then suck her back in. That’s how narcissists work.
Did you see these photos of Ben trying to hold Dunkin Donuts delivery and a package at the same time? This is me every morning with my coffee mug and five things I need to bring into my office.
